I completely agree with that "you just gotta do it" speech. At the end of the day, your pets rely on you for everything. There are so many ways to make the care a little easier, but you still need to be there for them even if it isn't fun. Plus, doing the "boring" parts gives you more time for the interesting parts!

Have the goldfish play soccer with a mini soccer ball by filling it partially with water so it floats enough for them to bounce it but enough to sink in the water. Like hitting a air balloon to bounce it but the underwater fish version.

How do you find the motivation? Their cute wiggling adorableness is your motivation. Making sure they are alive and healthy and growing still the next day for you to smile and see them eat their snacks full of excitement is your motivation. The fish itself is your motivation to take care of it.
@ProffesionalZombie12 Жыл бұрын
I must live vicariously through fish keepers because my "care" is much more like the kiss of death to literally anything aquatic 😭 I'd love to keep fish, but my aquatics thumb is so brown I think it's mummified now. I'm trying to do a TON research, because yes one day I hope to keep my own adorable fishies for more than a month 👍🏻
@jadencory6169 Жыл бұрын
@ProffesionalZombie12 may i ask what kind of issues do you have when taking care of them that cause their death's?
@ProffesionalZombie12 Жыл бұрын
@@jadencory6169 I will say I tended to be forgetful about changing out filters--not out of lack of motivation, just plain forgetful. But in hindsight, if I could pin it on anything it was a sheer lack of education and understanding of how the fish do. But I've had a hermit crab, snails and betta fish all commit mass su*c*de on me. I've killed who knows how many bettas at this point in all kinds of setups throughout my life. Killed 6 Goldfish (granted I was 8 years old and was housing all of them in a 20 gallon tank). Killed multiple Cory catfish and an African Dwarf Frog. But even the ones I took REALLY good care of would live maybe a year if I was lucky. Still, after my last fish (a betta) died when I was 14, I swore off fishkeeping for the next 16 years. I want to get back into it, so I've been cramming a lot of research/following a lot of fishtubers such as Luke. I really want to add a water feature with live critters in it to my Rainbow Boa's Vivarium, and want to make sure those critters don't get killed by my death's touch at fishkeeping. So I'm taking an attitude of "The less I tinker with it. The better." And trying my best to plan a planted water feature that needs as little interference from me as possible--beyond the occasional (hopefully very occasional if I set it up correctly) water change. The less I interact with those fish, the better chance they have at surviving ._.
@jadencory6169 Жыл бұрын
Definitely get your information from multiple sources, and educate yourself as best you can, but no matter what, you will make mistakes, but dont let those hold you back and keep trying your best. I've been at this for a year now, and I love my goldfish babies, of which I have 14 now, I have one betta in his own 10 gal and a blue dream shrimp colony, in their own 10gal. If i had 3 pecices of advice for anyone getting back into the hobby or has had traumatic experiences in it like yourself, it would be these. First, the sorce of the fish is super important, regardless of the extra costs associated. If you want a good pet, get them from a good breeder. You are much more likely to be given a healthy animal and not one on its last leg like most fish from the pet store. Second would be trust your water sorce, and always use a water conditioner. If your city water or well water is toxic or has bad water parameters for your fish, it will die if you dont adjust them to the specific levels of the species of fish that you are keeping needs to be helthy. Lastly, learn your fishes behavior. Just like everything in life, each fish has their own personality, and the way of doing the things they do, so paying attention and ingadging with them is good actually, because then you know when something is amiss or wrong because they are acting differently and doing things they wouldn't normally do. Im sure all of this is stuff you will read and hear, or have heard and read already and know, but I encouraged anyone who has the time available and passion to take care of are fishy friends to do so. The inspiration I got from Luke to get my first 4 babies changed my life for the better in a lot of ways. If you or anyone else gets even a fraction of that or just loves their fish and takes good care of it, then its for the better, and you should try. The lives of your fish clearly didn't just go over your head, and each mistake can be a learning opportunity. Even though learning that way is super painful.
@ProffesionalZombie12 Жыл бұрын
@@jadencory6169 very wise words 😊 Yeah I've come to the realization that getting fish from the pet store is *absolutely* setting yourself up for failure. I'm going to be testing my aquatics keeping with my pet boa's Vivarium. If that experiment works (and I don't automatically kill my poor fish), I'm definitely going to see if I can get back into fishies. And maybe even have my own little Igglybuffs from our Queen Jigglypuff 🤍

I completely agree that doing what your pets need from you, is on the same level of importance as doing what your kids need from you, or even what you need from yourself. However, I just want to state that with mental illness such as depression, bipolar, sometimes even adhd, there can be a disconnect between what you know you need to do, and what you can do. I think the fact that someone is trying to problem solve to fix themself is important to recognize.

"Pet store fish just like to die" can confirm, I've been owning pet store bettas for years and they always die after 2 - 3 years due to some sort of complications, my first one died from a tumor, second from unknown causes (just found him dead one day), my current (third) one is still alive and we're around the 2 year mark but she's recently been having some issues with swim bladder disease and I'm trying really hard to help her but its not looking too good atm. A lot of the issues with pet store fish are because they're bred poorly, bad genetics, I feel like I'll probably get my next betta from a breeder instead.

I totally get the struggle of finding the motivation to be able to do basic care for your pets. I’m not a fish owner but I didn’t do a good job taking care of my previous pet just know that it’s ok if you need to surrender your pet if you are not doing well. It’s not an easy task taking care of another life form when you’re struggling to take care of yourself. You should be trying to provide your pets with the best quality of life at the very least if you can’t be the one to give it to them. I suggest finding ways to automate some tasks to take the load off of it for yourself. Good luck! ❤

I stopped keeping fish because I loathed water changes and it wasn’t fair to either he fish or me…but my cat on the other hand, I’ve woken up in a panic out of a deep sleep in the middle of the night, scared that she was starving and had to check the food bowl to make sure it was still full (she free feeds). Even when I know I already topped it off that day. If you’re not at the moment ready to jump to take care of your pet, you shouldn’t have them. I love watching your Goldie’s though! So very cute! Don’t want them, but still love watching other people have them!

Hi Luke, Love your goldfish and for sharing your journey with us. So sorry you lost Gigachad in shipping. Just sharing my simple method for breeding goldfish. I'm just a hobbyist like you but this method has work so many times I'm in hopes it will work for you. You should condition males and females separately. Do this for 2 weeks minimum with lots of bloodworms, livefoods and soft gel foods like repashy and steam eggs. If your using pellets presoak it before feeding. Also if you can also introduce duckweed and wheat germ it helps tremendously too. The wheatgerm should also be soaked or blended it with repashy or steam eggs. Don't feed it dry as it makes a mess. You'll need to keep heater set around 28 deg. so they can process the increased feedings during this period. Increased aeration and don't overstock them during conditioning. Don't clean the water too much during the conditioning phase just do bare minimum. After 2 weeks check the males to see if the breeding stars on cheeks or pectoral fins are pronounced and simultaneously the females have soft bulging belly. If yes for both then put them in 100% aged water and it should trigger them to breed. Best of luck with the future breeding.👍👍👍👍👍👍

Luke if you drop in a big spawning mop, feed some blood & earth worms, & do a water change just before a storm front, you might be able to encourage some breeding behavior. Tip on the spawning mop is to make it long enough to go from top to bottom and tie it off so they don't just push it around. Good Luck!!🐠🍀

I guess i can agree with Luke's lik motivation speech about "How can you not have motivation to do it?" Yes theyre like your babies and ive had guppies and bettas before but when youre going through severe depression it becomes less of a pleasure to care for them and more like "I wonder if i should even be trying at all" I know i got that gut wrenching feeling of just utter helplessness after finding my guppy dead despite water changes and the best care i could offer and then it just deteriorated into a feeling of "I can't do this anymore" So I'd like to argue that even getting out of bed and eating is a chore, let alone taking care of pets. Yeah we have to, but it just feels a bit off to say "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T HAVE MOTIVATION!?!?" Some people just don't, and it just makes us feel all that more ashamed when we're told that, but i know where Luke is coming from and i still kind of agree
