If we look at this timeline it wouldn't be able to support France in any meaningful way, or? What would happen: Even IF they would join the Allies and try to support France, it would fall and with Spain joining the war germany would move south and grab Spain with it. So yes, Gibralta would fall like in this scenario but we would end with a a shorter world war, I would guess: Germany and Italy "wasting" more time on the west front, loosing men and equipment. Already at the start it would make the situation worse for the axis with pushing more equipment to spain, trying to win the civil war italy would look even worse then in our timelime at the start of the war.

@@Gnowimaster That is an interesting point that you are making. However, there are three other things to consider as well. 1. How much material would the republican government gain if they were able to win the Spanish Civil War. We do know that the Soviet Union, Germany, Italy, and Portugal provided a lot of aid and equipment during the civil war. However, if the republican government was able to win the civil war then it would also gain a lot of that equipment. 2. Would Spain's participation influence France and Britain to attack Germany much earlier? During the early stages of WWII, the French attempted to attack Germany during the Saar offensive, but they didn't launch a big invasion into Germany. It would have created a problem for Germany if France with support from Britain and Spain decided to invade Germany from the Saar region because it would force Germany to fight on two fronts (one in the west against France, Spain, Britain, and one in the east against Poland). 3. What would Portugal have done when Spain remained a republic and joined the Allies? We do know that Salazar supported the nationalist cause in Spain during the Civil War because Salazar didn't like the republican government. However, the Portuguese were also (somewhat) aligned with the allies due to their old alliance with Britain. If Spain decided to join in favor of the allies then would Portugal also follow their lead or would it stay neutral? I personally don't think that they would attack Spain because such a war could be catastrophic for Portugal at the time.

@loganrh Actually probably quite a lot. Australia did a hell of a lot in WW 2 however mostly in the Pacific Theater but Canada did a lot of productions for the UK. As well when it came to the Battle of Britain Canadian RCAF pilots got the 3rd largest numbers of confirmed kills behind the Polish and Czech’s. We were also one of their major engine producers. Then you have stuff like D-Day where Canada was put in charge of Juno beach alongside the French and ANZac but Canada made up a majority of it. The Canadians were also largely responsible for liberating the Netherlands. So without the colonies things would have been a lot worse for Great Britain

If the empire completely collapsed and we assume that the UK was completely alone (the only way for this to be possible is colonies using the war to declare independence in 39), the UK is cooked. Immediately at the start, all manpower, resources, and equipment has to be produced in house or bought. The British economy couldn’t sustain that, especially not for 6 years. They could not keep up with the entire axis bombing them, they’re going to have to capitulate or get sent into the ocean. And even if by some miracle they do produce enough planes, they and that giant navy need oil. The UK no longer has its Middle Eastern or pacific oil fields. There’s no one in Africa to stop Italy. They’re completely defenseless. Most of Italy’s product is gonna go to Germany to help bomb Britain. There’s no one to save the Greeks either. There’s no one in the pacific to stop the Japanese either. They just take Malaya and Indonesia without much resistance. They might not even attack the Philippines here so there’s a chance no USA either. The UK caps, at best, they get naval assets seized and are forced into nonaggression. At worst, they get a full, axis aligned, regime change. Potentially, we’re looking at the entirety of Europe versus the Soviets with American lend lease if they’re lucky.

As a Spanish and amateur historian, I agree with your points and explanations. Inside the falangist party, there was a strong movement to join the Axis powers, but they didn’t succeed in doing so. 1. The country was obliterated after a three-year conlfict, and literally there weren’t any resources left. 2. Spain was highly dependent of food imported from UK, if they joined Axis, the British government could cut it immediately. 3. The nationalists, instead of europe were more focused in expanding into north Africa, that mean invading French and/or British colonies, so could lead into conflict with allies or potential foes. Even if they jumped into the fray, you must think as if it was another Italian army, more or less, with a lot of combat experience, but with outdated equipment and tired of the three-year conflict. However, they ‘joined’ the axis powers, sending a few ‘volunteers’ divisions, what was called ‘Blue divisions’, that name came from the color of their uniform. They fought in the east front, mainly keeping the Leningrad siege.

Two interesting points could be brought up here: 1. Spain joining the war likely means that the Soviets make it even farther into Europe, creating a larger iron curtain. 2. The wildcard that could play a part in this is Portugal. Likely, the Portuguese wouldn’t be super happy with an axis-aligned Spain, but they wouldn’t want to declare direct war unless the British and Americans would help them capitulate the Spanish. Could be another interesting scenario.

I understand the premise you have to say mustache man wasn't smart about attacking the USSR in 1941, but many other things were going on that forced Germany into war in the first place. Ever since 1933 it was an eventuality. The economics of Europe and a food shortage would have either ended in many civil wars or a large conflict between nations. The tactical situation you're looking at has very little to do with the reasoning behind it. You can look at things like the French Revolution or the Spanish Civil War and say that these things were unavoidable, but changing small things could have resulted in different outcomes. The same is true with Germany and WW2. To stop it you would have either change the outcome of WW1 or avoid both wars altogether. Honestly the only thing that could have changed this might have been Napoleon Bonaparte and the Battle of Waterloo. If Napoleon had won it is possible but not guaranteed that Germany exists more or less like Holland or Belgium. Either way cental Europe would be relegated to the sidelines of Anglo American and Soviet dominance in the geopolitical landscape of the second half of the 20th century.

I can't see the logical connection between the Axis successfully consolidating the mediterranean, and Hitler deciding *not* to invade the Soviet Union, in any way. In our (real world) timeline the Nazis always had plans of expanding east, they were emboldened by their successes in Europe, and they correctly thought there was little chance of Britain, isolated, invading western europe by land. All of these factors are the same in the world you created.

pro tip for anyone struggling to fight the allied Navies or really any Navy that is equal or even superior to your own: invest like hell into getting 2 carriers, try & the first out asap I like to wait until I have level 2 carriers researched then start building them, then add them to your fleet(s) and the AI will tip toe around your fleet and generally struggle more than they already do. 5 slots dedicated to CV bombers and 1 to CV cas with armor piercing bombs & those seemingly never ending Allied naval invasions pretty much stop being an issue entirely. if you wanna go the extra mile you could convert your level 1 BB's to battlecruisers & break your floatilla into two task forces for your East/West coasts. granted that doesn't make for a very interesting alternate history video considering how hilariously op carrier battlegroups are, not to mention slugging it out with and trying to match the Royal Navy head on without the naval cheese is also quite a lot of fun too.

I'm sorry if this has already been explained, but what's been going on with the editing in your recent videos? There's a weird delay for the top of your head that makes your head go all wobbly when you move it. It normally wouldn't be a big deal, but once I saw it, I couldn't un-see it, and it's really distracting in an Uncanny Valley kind of way. The first clear example of this effect in this video starts at around 0:22 and goes until about 0:28, in case you're not sure what I'm talking about.

Interesting that under this scenario the UK-US allies spend more time on invasion of France and Spain and the USSR makes deeper in roads into Europe. While there would still have been various conferences and it's possible that the powers would still have agreed to carve up Germany between them, it's highly unlikely that division between East and West would have been the same as our timeline. That is to say, I can imagine US and UK having a smaller share of Germany - which would also make them more reluctant to create a French zone of control. Meanwhile the USSR would have a larger East Germany while also laying claim to Italy, perhaps with some ports being defacto USSR territory so that they have options for their "warm sea fleet" other than the Black Sea and being stuck behind Turkey.

You forgot about the Iraqi Golden Square coup, if the axis had complete control of North Africa they could've helped support the coup in Iraqi and possibly allow an Iraqi entry into the axis, and with Italy and Germany invading crimea + Vichy France's entry into the axis and practically having Turkey surrounded they most likely would've been pressured into joining the war as well.

Posting on an alt history video to get it seen. Possible interesting alt history, but what if Thailand(Siam) was given better concessions after assisting the entante during WW1. Specifically the return of its taken territory before and during the Bowring treaties with France and the United Kingdom. Along with the freedom from taxation and colonization that was historically given. This would possibly have prevented the bloodless revolution in 1933 as the vast rice fields and agricultural areas in Cambodia and Laos would not have been lost, as well as the added coastline of its Vietnamese territory remaining. This would have vastly improved its economy which was highly agricultural at the time and prevented the Great Depression from ravaging the country as much which is what led to the bloodless rebellion. All this may have improved relations with the allies since the population would not have had near as much resentment towards the British or French. This also would have mantained Thailand as a major agricultural power in South Asia which along with British Malaysia, would have had more interaction with the British. With the trade relations and regained territory, the Siamese government would peruse closer ties with its largest trade partners in China and Malaysia, but now with the addition of the British. This could have possibly prevented the Japanese from going through with their “invasion” of Siam on Dec 8th 1941 due to the British and Siamese governments having closer ties. If the invasion did happen as it did historically, Siam would join on the side of the allies against Japan and actually fought back. I feel it would be possible since the monarchy had historically been very back and forth with most European countries but had very close ties with them during WW1, if those ties never waned then it’s very possible this could’ve happened. It might just be very hard to make happen in the game.

What if chemical warfare happened in europe during WW2? Germany had huge stockpiles of Sarin and the UK stockpiled Anthrax, so in my eyes it's more surprising it didn't happen.

The problem with using Hoi4 as an example is that there are few "white peace" options. Lets say if for example bigger fleets of the RN are trapped inside the the mediterranean sea, they either could've gone through Gibralter by force, taking (maybe heavy) casulties, or maybe even negotiate peace with the axis. Because remember: Mustache man didn't really want war in the west, that man was always looking east (thus your argument of him not going to war in 1941 makes no sense*) So I suggest something ala Dunkirk, just with the Royal Navy. They could be used to force the UK to the table. But I rather suspect the RN might even force the Gibralter crossing in their entire force, before substancial german airsupport could cripple the fleet even more. I don't see Spain be able to stop the RN on their own, if the tried to break out ot the mediterranean sea. *After all, loosing Africa will make the UK even more focussed on defending the homeland, thus properly cost the Luftwaffe even more ressources
