One point of note for the video: Allied and Soviet divisions were not equal in terms of size. A standard Soviet rifle division had about 9500 troops in it at full nominal strength while the average American division was 15,000 men strong. So while the Soviets may have had a 2x nominal divisional strength advantage in the European theatre the actual manpower difference was much less. Then there's the fact that this is nominal strength that we're talking about with many of those Soviet divisions being battered and bruised from many years of intense fighting in Europe. The advantage was still on the Soviets side but the skew was nowhere near as heavy as this video implies.

The issue with numbers is that while the Soviets had more divisions, after the grind of pushing to Berlin, the Soviet army division strength were about half strength. In addition, the Soviets were in a similar situation to the Germans supply wise and were in hostile territory compared to the Allies, especially in Poland.
@simonnachreiner8380Ай бұрын
Exactly! If the people of the occupied states of Poland, Germany, the Baltics, a good portion of the former Balkan axis, and the defeated but unbroken Ukrainians learned that the allies were pushing to actually liberate them (Not the phony totally not imperialistic "under new management" that the commies brought) they would've lit the logistics of their homelands on fire if not partaken in outright revolution. The Soviets took to a policy of loot, grape, and plunder whenever they exhausted their supply lines and the occupied territories _hated_ them for it they just couldn't do anything about it. There's a propaganda story from the winter war about an old lady living in a cabin in Rural Finland who was notified by some soldiers that the Reds were coming and they needed to destroy her Cabin to deny the enemy shelter. She took a broom, swept the floors and sat in her chair one last time before going to the hearth and started the blaze herself. Imagine that, but over the entire former eastern front. Hell considering that the Muslim majority Turkic regions also had their religion suppressed by the soviets they might also rise up in a holy war at the same time too.

@simonnachreiner8380Ай бұрын

@chrisreed4065Ай бұрын
One thing to consider is that soviet divisions were smaller than their western counterparts. A late war soviet rifle division had an "on paper" strength of about 9500 men whereas a 1945 U.S. infantry Division had an "on paper" strength of 15,000 men. This translate all down the line in terms of unit size. The manpower disparity would not be as great as depicted. Soviet fighter aircraft would struggle against their western counterparts at high altitude as they weren't designed for it, most fighting in the air occured at medium to low altitude on the eastern front. This means that a high altitude bombing campaign would be very effective. Western pilot and plane quality was also much higher, you only have to look at the battle of the phillipine sea to see what happens in such circumstances. My guess would be an initial Western surge that would be stopped then reversed but the Soviets would not be able to exploit the reversal because every rail hub and logistic station between Moscow and wherever the front is would be completely obliterated. The result, a stalemate that would either result in the use of the bomb or an armistice.

In our own timeline, the Soviets had more divisions, tanks and planes, but their divisions were beaten and bruised, and the reinforcements they were receiving were freshly conscripted kids. Their tanks were of shockingly poor quality (those that they didn’t receive from the Allies, anyway) and their planes simply couldn’t compete with the planes of the RAF and USAAF. The Soviets may have had the numbers advantage, but the allies had the equipment and industrial advantage, and those matter more than raw manpower.

I think a hot war between the East and West in late ‘45/early ‘46 would drop into a stalemate until Soviet cities start turning into instant fireballs. The Red Air Force would not access to a lot of the high octane aviation fuel that it got from the other allied nations, thus dooming them from being able to fly high altitude missions. No high altitude missions (or severely reduced) would give US Superfortresses free rein to bombard anything and everything that could ever be useful to the Soviets. The B-29 regularly flew extreme range missions against Japan and could easily hit targets in Belorussia and Ukraine and if using airfields in the Middle East, could even hit the oil fields in Baku. The only other area of concern would be the Middle East itself, where not a lot of forces were stationed and Iran being on the border with the USSR. Soviet logistics would be at the end of their rope already as everything would need to be transported by Train and then truck, which means that supplies can be interdicted by bombing raids and then fighter-bombers after the Red Air Force is diminished by a little bit. Once nukes enter the field, it’s all jover for the Soviets. Also, British Jet engines would not end up in the hands of the Soviets and the Jumo engines of the 262 can only get you so far, so jets are off the table to the Soviets in the immediate term while the Meteor and P-80 would be deployed. On the frontline, it would be hell for the first month, but American reinforcements would come pouring back in. The conflict would not have any side making major breakthroughs but will se Soviet territory itself start to fall as Marines hit the shores in Vladivostok. Everyone likes to say “The Soviets beat 70% of the German army on the eastern front!” I would like to make it clear that we are not the German army, we have things that the Germans could only dream of and we have radios in every infantry unit, so good luck with the constant artillery fire against anything that moves in the open.

Either way, Japan should remain in Siberia after October 1922, with enough legitimacy so that America doesn't embargo Japan or force Japan's withdrawal Finally, Japan should be able to pay for the “reclamation” of its territory from the Reds with Siberian gold/iron/gems/fur. What if the British were more loose on their colonial policy, and maybe things like the Quit India movement and the decolonization of Africa happened much much earlier, possibly before WW2?

Before watching. My thoughts are that should the UK under Churchill actually did this, there would have been a massive schism between the US and the UK. Some US generals such as Patton advocated for going to war against the USSR, however the public and President Truman wanted the war to end. It may very well be the case that it highly depends on how the US responds as to the outcome of the new war. If the US were to join, it would be ugly, but I firmly believe the USSR would collapse quickly and not in a way they could recover. By this time supply lines for the Russians are already stretched thin as they raced to be the first to Berlin, also the Russian economy was running bare. Nearly half of all men had been mobilized and there was precious few to tend the field to feed the troops. Even in our own timeline, nearly a million Russians died in the 1946-47 famine caused in large part to the destroyed infrastructure and agricultural capacity. The US at this time had the A-bomb and we don't have the fear of M.A.D. yet. It was also too early for the full ramifications of dropping the bomb on the Japanese to hit the US public. That would not truly hit until Russia came out with their own bomb nearly a decade later. I would predict a collapse and possible revolution within Russia within a year. If the US were split or did not join fully at the very least, the push by the UK would easily stall and without pressure from the Americans on the Russians, they could turn this into a death march for the UK and Russia as both were in poor shape after WW2. Russia could hold off long enough and cause enough damage to the British forces that the UK would have to retreat or come to a negotiated settlement.

What if the soviets invaded first? Like what if the Germans had chosen to wait to prepare for longer or something or how could the soviets have been more prepared
