Stale Candy and Motion Controls | Mario Party 8

I used to play Mario Party 8 so much as a kid. It was definitely in my top 5 Wii games, along with Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, Mario Kart Wii, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

You're way to harsh about the whole stealing stars ordeal. You're marking for Koopa's Tycoon Town literally states that the fact that Stars can kind of be stolen is more bad than the board is all together which you Rank as a 9 without Bowser, but you mark down 5 out of those 9 just for Bowser stealing stars which is very excessive. Not to mention that it really isn't stealing stars. The board basically has 15 Stars(21 if you count the Lucky spaces). Taking coins out of Hotels doesn't lower the static amount of stars on the board so it really isn't them leaving play. It's no different than if say, on a more traditional board Bowser showed up when you landed on his space, took you Star and set up his own Star Space with your Star being given to the first person to reach him. 4/5 of the Gimmick Boards are very fun to play on although a bit empty like you said in terms of fun spaces. They have gimmicks, they are executed very well, and all feel very different, even the 2 Straight Line Static Stars feel very unique from each other. I feel this Mario Party did the best when it came to gimmick boards the only exception being the Snowflake Lake style Board but I personally think that style board sucks anyways.

I should also say this games problem was not necessarily Hudson Soft burnout although it might have played a factor but was more so due to time constraints. This game was intended for the Gamcube, but was ported to the Wii which is why the 4:3 issue is present. This is also why almost every minigame feels like they weren't catered to Motion Contols or a D Pad bc they weren't, they were made for A Controller with an analog stick. This game was a victim of the early Wii days where Nintendo were trying to justify the consoles existence by shoehorning Motion Controls into games that didn't need them.

Yeah for real, there's no way that stealing stars should be worth HALF the possible points for an entire board, the take is getting really old and Tycoon Town is way more fun than lots of boards that would arbitrarily be given higher scores by this metric.

I prefer to categorize the Mario Party games as follows: N64 Trilogy: 1, 2, 3 Transitional game: 4 Capsule trilogy: 5, 6, 7 Last hurrah: 8 I consider DS to be the portable side game since it isn't numbered. Still part of the series but just sitting on its own as a side game. It just feels weird putting 4 with 5 and 6 which are vastly different with the capsules/orbs, and then having 7 on its own when it's more similar to 5 and 6 than 4 is to them.

For boards like King Boo's haunted hideaway and Shy Guys perplex express it makes sense as to why DK and Bowser spaces are combined as if they weren't and were like 5 and 7 then it wouldn't make sense because if you land on a DK space twice before landing on a Bowser space once and vice versa pretty much nothing will happen so for those boards it makes sense why they're combined but the other 4 boards yeah they should of been separated for those.

I have to ask isn’t most of the head staff in nd cube and the Hudson Mario party team mostly the same? It seems like they are based on most of the articles I’ve read about the change. If this is the case then how come the games are worse if the developers are the same besides the name? Were they fatigued by making very similar games in a short amount of time? Was it partially with the critics Having fatigue of the games? I’m curious what are your thoughts.

Personal rankings for boards I haven’t unlocked Bowser’s board due to my disc not working and I had to buy the game 3 times. 5. King boo’s haunted hideaway(Too luck based. Also the lucky spaces and chimp charity events do nothing if the house resets) 4. Koopa’s tycoon town(Decent board but gets repetitive after 30+ turns) 3. Goomba’s booty boardwalk(A worse Pagoda peak but lots of stars can get gotten) 2. DK’s treetop temple(Standard Board but still fun to play on) 1. Shy guy’s perplex express(Great linear map and the DK and Bowser spaces really affect the board).

I like the form this series has taken, but I feel like you and I also have very different tastes in Mario Party. Taking stars out of play is actually less punishing than a friend stealing a star because if I have 2 stars and my friend has 1, but then Bowser steals a star from me, my friend and I are 1 and 1 when it comes to stars. If my friend is the one that steals the stars from me, than suddenly I’m down one star while he’s up one star instead of putting us at even footing. I just don’t understand the hate of taking them out of play. It seems like an arbitrary rule that has no real reason behind it. We also would rank our Mario Parties very differently, especially when it comes to boards.

I am so happy to see someone kinda trash this game because I swear I hear nothing but people saying Mario Party 8 is one of the best installments in the series and it has many of the problems you mentioned in this video. As a hardcore Bowser fan, I can't believe how much I hate Bowser's board in this game. It's absolutely horrible!

Yeah, 6 and 7 had prices vary, but it was only while playing through 8 that I really came to dislike the mechanic. I didn't realize 7 removed duels occurring when landing on the same space. I guess it's less noticeable when there are still duel spaces lol

Aw yeah been waiting for this and i agree with almost everything, the boards are boring and the candies are just items but worse. Plenty of minigames are really fun even with motion controls IMO but still some are underwhelming. By far a clear indication to the fact the formula has been getting stale, which was true for many games by nintendo in the wii era
