My dad and I were at this show, he got me into the Grateful Dead as a kid and was able to get us tickets for just this night. He'd been sick for a long time and passed away a couple weeks ago. Watching this version really pulls at my heartstrings, and I am infinitely grateful to had experienced it with him. I know he's somewhere on the moon watching me down below.

Trey had 5 nights to impress a legion of extremely loyal, dedicated, and let's face it, judgmental fans and step into the shoes of an absolute giant and hero of a man. I am not the biggest fan of Phish but I do appreciate a lot of their music and the spirit of their scene which borrowed so heavily from the Grateful Dead. It is documented that he spent months learning over 100 songs and practicing hours on end. He did not miss a lyric the entire run (except for a minor slip up in Help on the Way where he said "sorry" into the mic!) and his effort and playing was absolutely beautiful. It was a no-win situation for him as he was never going to live up to the impossible heights of Garcia and he knew that going in and gave it his best. His best impressed the heck out of me and he carried that torch that Jerry left behind wonderfully. Well done Trey!

Lately, i have been experiencing this phenomenon where i have been very emotional and feeling the need to cry, but being unable to. I was even unable to weep during emotionally charged moments of the GD50 run... This has been going on for about 2 - 3 weeks, and the inability and suppression of tears has been like harboring acidic poison inside of me. While watching this, hairs stood all over my body and i constantly got cold chills, and i could feel waves of serotonin rushing through my brain down my spinal chord. Then when Phil gave Trey a sincere hug and whispered his praises in his ears while Trey had that look on his face like he had just experienced something extremely moving and overwhelmingly spiritual, i was finally able to expel the stifled, suppressed tears and it felt like a million dollars. Just thought i would share that. Be kind, everyone, spirit moves through all things. Love and Light not fade away.

@@Chrispypullen i just don't know how true that is. John could've learned these songs during his teens as much as trey did. Trey didnt get into GD until he was 19... That said I'd take Trey over John up there any and everyday. I think the impressive part is waht Trey was able to do in 6 months, vs. playing with the band for 3+ years

never thought about it but that's absolutely why it hits so hard, thank you for describing that. In the Long Strange Trip documentary, he said to his then wife that "if I could I'd just retire and live off the ice cream money for the rest of my life." When she asked why he didn't just do that, he said "do you realize how many people's livelyhoods depend on me keeping this thing going?" What an immense amount of pressure to be the leader of something so huge that, quite frankly, grew beyond Jerry and the band's control into something so simultaneously beautiful and at times, incredibly ugly and sinister. He also said that part of the reason he used drugs to escape was that, "I look out at everyone who gets to escape life and enjoy our music, looking at me. I don't have anyone like that." To me that's this song's theme is essentially the classic motif of it being "lonely at the top" - getting to "the moon" which is what you always dreamed of, but then realizing you've removed yourself from any sense of normalcy and pining for a simple life on a back porch in July, which I'm sure Trey can absolutely relate to on a powerful level. Such an incredible song.
