Kudos for being so patient, I have had a couple instances of this type of crap from "friends". Tried to sell a bike to a shipmate when I was in the Navy (he REALLY wanted the bike, yeah right) and I got one payment, then nothing, had to "mechanically agitate" him to shake the keys back out of him to repo the bike after a couple months of excuses, then had to fix the damage he did to it (yes, I shook some money out of him for the repairs, too). Everyone on the boat (submarine) knew about it (I made sure) and he never got so much as a beer out of any of us after that. He's lucky he made to through the rest of his deployment with us (this was not his only issue).

He had another cousin of ours that would come in and want stuff done and he tried to help them out and not charge them for minor stuff. Well he started taking advantage of the situation and just asking for too much for free. One day the guy came in wanting a new starter. the shop owner told him he would have to charge him for the starter, but not to worry he was setting him up a charge account. He got the starter and charged around $100 for it on the new charge account. The guy never did pay the charge account. My cousin that owned the shop says it was the best $100 he ever spent, because they haven't been back since they still owe the $100.

Hey Stan. Im new to watching your videos. I have to say you are showing incredible good character by trying to help out that kid with "loaning" the mowers. Unfortunately, I've had very similar experience with helping others in them getting started in business by giving them equipment, even with a written contract, and having them fail to make payments. Even had one total a piece, the insurance wrote the $65k check to the guy, and he cashed it and ran. Even though the equipment was still in our name. I pursued with a lawyer but he refused to help saying the banks lawyers were too big and would drag it out for years and lawyers fees would be astronomical. Unfortunately, there are people who are takers, and there are givers. You and I would get along. Sorry for your loss. It sucks to see that happen to good people. Lesson learned? Many years later, things have changed and I’m short. Asked for some of it back. Begrudgingly they paid back all but 3k. Years later they now insist I owe them over 40k. Last I heard they still owed me 3k. That’s interesting, how’s crazy going for you. Last time I talked with them. The best part: when my wife was pregnant with our first child, this relative called me selfish for not letting him steal from my family. That was literally the last time he got money from me. When he calls, all I can offer is advice and prayers. You handled that as well as possible. People with no boundaries hate it when you don't allow yours to be violated. They thought that they shouldn’t have to pay it back. My wife has seen their son one time after it was born. I have never seen the grandson and that was five years ago. Reminds me of when i was a kid my dad had a landscape company he was doing a landscape for the guy who owned the land my dad leased for his nursery/yard/house. The guy canceled the sprinkler portion of the job. My dad went by to drop off some material on a saturday for the rest of the project and caught his main guy doing the sprinkler job with my dads tools and parts.

An old friend of mine who is now dead told me once that he had lent some money to an extended family member, wasn't a lot of money but back in the 70's but $40 was a bit. When the same person asked again, some months later, if he could borrow some money my friend said sure, when he is paid back what he already lent him. Sometimes wisdom comes at a price which will never be repeated.

Been there myself. Sold a car to a friend the same way, never saw a cent and got a call over a year later that it was in an impound lot still in my name. They wanted more than it was worth. Wrote it off.

I don't associate with people that I don't trust. I'm 52 and there's about a half a dozen people that I'll deal with on a regular basis. However, I start out giving everybody the benefit of the doubt. The level of trust will start out small and build over time. I only have one real friend that I would trust as much as my wife. A friend is someone that you can show up at their door at 2:00 a.m. with a body in your trunk... They don't say a word, they just put on their shoes and go get a shovel.

The kid told his dad a different story for sure. My father taught me to never lend money to friends you expect or need back. If you look at it as a gift and get it back your happy. Go nto it that way or don’t do it. He also said that if you are prosperous and someone comes to you for a hand out and you can do it that’s ok but make a deal with that person that if you help them they never again talk about money/ask ever again. Then you can walk away feeling good and you are set up if they come back.

Had a " good " friend at the time where I sold him a dirtbike for $1000. The stipulation was that he didn't have the money upfront and I told him he could make payments to pay off the $1000. He made 2 payments on time to a total of $570 . 1 year later, he has not made any other payments, and im wanting my bike back. He is longer a friend and will never associate myself with him ever again .
