Is the star and crescent a symbol of #Islam? Is there something unique about the star and crescent that explains why it is featured so prominently in #Muslim-majority countries? Dr. Safiyyah Ally answers this question! She explains that the #star and crescent has been used since ancient times and has been found amongst many different peoples; it isn't exclusive to #Islam, and its origin isn't Islamic. It was adopted as a symbol of the Ottoman empire, which governed the Muslim world for hundreds of years. And it is from there that the symbol of this empire became connected in people’s imaginations to the #religion of Islam as a whole. But she stresses that the Quran does not mention this symbol and neither does the #hadith literature. Early Muslims did not use the star and crescent to represent Islam. And in fact, an argument could be made that Islam does not condone the use of religious symbols.

I politely have to disagree here.. the Moon an Star is not a moon a star...it's the symbol of an eclipse with the negative space between the 2 being the shadow of the moon. The eclipse which on coinciding with the last day of Ramadan is a symbol of the final hour.

The "crescent" moon is in reality a symbol of the eclipse. The eclipse that we are promised would be the signs in the heavens that will show the signs of the Mahdis arrival.. that sign is the Solar Eclipse which takes place the end day of Ramadan whole we have the Lunar eclipse in the middle of the month of Ramadan. And if we listen to the Quran and listen to the prophecy that come before the Quran as well we know there will be 7 years of tribulations also following the Mahdis arrival. 2017.. we had a solar eclipse marking that 7 years.. 2024 7 years later on April 8th the last day of Ramadan we will be welcomed with the eclipse that was promised..as too, we also have the Lumar Eclipse on March 25 (middle of Ramadan) as promised.. once he arrives he will correct the rest of the history of Islam that the world includeling the Islamic scholars lie about.

And you also heard that it is popular among different people groups throughout history. It is a symbol, it goes without saying that it is symbolic of something. That is what this video didn't say and you should be interested in. The video was only made to tell us that the all important ancient symbol symbolizes nothing. Getting it off Islamic flags won't necessarily remove it from the top of the buildings under which you worship.

John Poul: You are wrong as you misinterpreted/misquoted and twisted the historical points to serve your purpose. Allah in Arabic means God but Arabs before Islam had different gods so the holy Quran reintroduced the true definition of Allah who is one and does not have a son or family. Secondly, the black stone has nothing to do with Haji and kissing the stone is not worshipping the stone. All muslims bow down/kneel down to Almighty Allah and Kaba serves as a holy platform and a sign of unity for all muslims around the world to pray to Allah (SWT). Moving around the Kabah is also not worshipping the Kabah as mulims praise Almighty while moving and then leaving the Kabah so imagine thousands keep standing their then how can one control the flow and order of all the people coming to this holy place. Wonderful points. Crescent-star was the symbol of ottomans, eastern romans and trabzon rum. Its origin most likely is the patron goddess of byzantium, artemis-diana. Islam does not use symbols unlike christianity as it sees symbolism a barrier between prayer and allah.

Most of cities of hellenized anatolia had either artemis or apollo as their patron gods, they are called "anatolian gods". Apollo protected troy from greeks in iliad, or the great temple of artemis has some remains in anatolia as well. We could trace the remains of artemis in byzantine symbolism and coins of trebizond empire. Their crescent was always accompanied with a star which was adopted by ottomans

I was very pleased with your video, and I found it concise, accurate to what I had thought was my understanding, as well as pleasantly presented. I was hearing alot of bad things on American (US) news, that basically told me that Muslims hated me, wanted to kill me, and that they worshipped the moon! I figured I should find out if this was true, so I went to a Mosque to find out, come what may, and let them speak for themselves. I met an Imam (correct spelling) who was very receptive to my inquiry, and thanked me for giving Islam a chance to speak. We had a wonderful conversation about as much of the complexity of his faith and it's long history. He never pushed his faith on me the way the Christians do, nor was I excluded as is The way of the Jewish faith (unless I married in). He had no problem with my atheism, and merely stated that he could see I was a seeker of truth, and therefore his faith told him that God/Allah had his plan for me, and would present himself to me in his own time in his own way. I have confirmed that all he said was true, except the last part, and you have again confirmed this. Peace and blessings upon you and yours! Thank you.

Kind of like the cross in Christianity. I don’t think the Bible ever specified that the cross should be the symbol of Christians, and IMO, it’s really strange to commemorate the founder of a religion via the instrument of their execution, but it’s still a symbol that most Christians see as representing themselves. Same with the crescent star. It may not have always been a symbol of Islam, but that doesn’t mean it can’t represent Islam now if the Muslim people choose it.

The Cresent and the Star predates Islam. Example in the Bible Gideon fought with some Arabian rulers and after defeating them, he stripped them of the Cresent and star amulets. Judges 8:21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Rise yourself and fall upon us, for as the man is, so is his strength.” And Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the crescent ornaments that were on the necks of their camels.

It was a method of punishment popularized by the romans in their judicial system, often times it was used as torture, whereas others it was used as a very painful and long lasting sentence of death. @@KenanTurkiye Its indeed possible that the Greeks were inspired by the symbolisms of the Sumerians, who lived many years BC, but the Ottomans though did not use this symbol until they conquered the Byzantine Empire. I suggest you to make a search to see how exactly the ancient Byzantine coins that were depicting the crescent, were. They look almost identical with the Ottoman flag. Is that a coincidence? Pointing out that crescend was used in 10.000BC and then based on that arguing that the Ottomans (who lived more than 11.000 years later) didnt take it from the Byzantines because they were "already using it", doesnt make sense once there is no proof of the continuity of the usage of the symbol by Turks thoughout these many thousands of years. Btw I didnt manage to find anything about the date 10.000BC. The oldest depictions of the crescent I found were those by Sumerians. Feel free to sent any link that confirms the 10000y.o. inscriptions in Turkmenistan. So maybe its seems to me like the crescent is a symbol that started in Asia (by Sumerians(?)) eventually went to ancient Greek Byzantium and then through the Ottomans, it "went back" to Asia. Many historians support this claim, once there is no proof that the Ottomans were using this symbol before they conquer Asia Minor. The depictions you refer to, are too old and certainly could not proove the continuous usage of the symbol bu the turks but only its initial origin. The similarities between the Byzantine crescent and the Ottoman one on the other side, are too big to be overlooked. So that's what makes more sense I think. In any case though, even if we consider Sumerians as the creators of the crescent symbol, the crescent was still used by them as a polytheistic symbol. So, its true that the origin of the symbol is indeed polytheistic. Of course, as I said before, muslims have the "right" to "re-interprete" it and give to it a different symbolism, an Islamic one, if they want so. There is no issue with that. Im just making the observation that the origins of the symbol are indeed pagan. My goal was not to be toxic, and sorry if it seemed like I was "attacking" anyone. Concering your last point, I think that the blindness you are talking about affects both Western and Eastern countries. Its not very uncommon for Westeners to consider Muslim countries as the "bad ones" but the same happens by Muslims that group together all of the "Westeners", who are "the sinful, and bad ones, and always hate Islam". But keep in mind that thats what "Christian" countries think as well: That the muslims are the ones being aggressive against them. Even the fact that you grouped Greece along with the "West" is partly because of an "Eastern" sterotype. I mean, from a Greek stand point, Greece is "East" if compared to the Western Europe. And Im not just talking about geography of course, but about cultural diffences. The culture of Greece is significantly more "Eastern" than that of France, Germany, US etc. So I think the problem of being close minded is something that both people from the "West" and "East" have. And we have to avoid considering "our side" as the good/important/great one, and the other side as by default the "bad one". To me, it makes perfectly sense for the Turks of Turkey to have that symbol, because you kinda "deserve" to carry it if your home is Anatolia, Pontus and Byzantium/Constantinople/Instanbul. Theirs these are, theirs is the moon and crescent, in the same way you could find moon and crescent on the shields of the army of Alexios Komnenos. I feel like you could make a similar argument about the cross for Christianity. Jesus was not to first or last to be crucified. In fact, many people have questioned the use of the thing that was used in Jesus’ execution to symbolize him. Imagine wearing a knife necklace to commemorate your friend who was stabbed to death. I think the crescent star and cross are both similar in that there is no inherent doctrine supporting their use as a symbol. They were just adopted.

Allah means "The God", so what do you mean "which one". Obviously there is only one God, the same One worhipped by Moses, Jesus and Abraham. Stoning the devil is in memory of Abraham, the whole Eid al-Adha tradition is in memory of Abraham and Ishmael. Following the lunar calendar has nothing to do with a "moon-god", other religions and cultures have their own traditional calendars too. They teach these things even in basic courses on World Religions.

Ok let me put this question to you. Hadhrat Eesa aleihissalaam was a Messenger of Allah. However, the Christians attributed incorrect things to him. So does this mean that we say he has no place in Islam full stop, Na-a'udhubillah? I'm making an analogy here. While the moon and star are associated with polytheistic faiths, it does not mean likewise that they are nothing to do with Islam. It is not the fault of the moon and star that people of other faiths attribute incorrect things to them, just as we would not say that Ka'aba was a centre for pagan worship. There IS significance in Islam of the moon and star, if people are not just simpletons and dig deeper. Here are a few and not an exhaustive list by any means: 1) Splitting of the moon, (surah 54, Qamr) 2) Allah Swearing by the star (surah 53, Najm) 3)Allah Swearing by the constellations (surah 85, Buruj) 4)Allah Swearing by the "nightly visitant" (Surah 86, Taariq) How long did it take you to read this? That's an idea of how long it took me to write it - with the exception of double checking the surah numbers. The answer I have given is not from a hadith (which I am sure there are plenty of that can be referenced if I wanted to paint myself as a KZbin Aalim - but these will only raise the discussion of daif, fabricated etc) I have simply referred to clear ayahs of the Quran. Please think before saying things. Worst we can say about this is Allahu'Aalam, not an outright rejection.

After the successful defeat of the Persian Sassanian Empire during the Arab Conquest, the Arabs in 636 CE started to mint Arab silver drahm coinage adopting the style and symbology of the Sassanian kingdom. This included numerous (infact 8) star and crescent images per coin, a Zoroastrian Fire Temple with attendants, and the image of the last Sassanian emperor. They also included the "besm Allah" , "In the name of God" in Arabic as well as the name of the new Arab Governor in many cases. This minting was clearly considered to be acceptable in the Islamic Empire and continued for about 60 years until 695 CE when the "Shahada" with reference to Mohammed was also added. These coins were eventually phased out in 704 CE after the Islamic Coin Reforms by Malik from 699 CE, with purely Arabic script and no images. Many of these coins still exist today confirming the above, and I have a collection myself. Dr Safiyyah, can you please clearly explain to me why Zoroastrian imagery was considered to be acceptable for 70 years in the Islamic Empire, particularly as the Quran forbids any type of human and pagan images to be publicly displayed? I can accept that there would be a transitional period of a few years (maybe 5 years or so) in minting new currency, but 70 years indicates to me that the coinage was fully acceptable in Islam, complete with star and crescent moon, which is with us today. Please clarify.

The conquest of the Persian Empire in 636 CE was an Arab Conquest and not an Islamic Conquest. It came about to fill a power vacuum after years of warfare between the Byzantine and Sassanian Empires when the Arab tribes who worked as mercenaries for the Sassanians took the opportunity and seized power. They were familiar with Zoroastrianism, and continued to use the same coinage adding only the "besm Allah" and the name of the Arab Governor. Clearly Zoroastrianism continued to be practised during this period. The first contempory historical reference to Mohammed and Islam is in the building of the Dome of the Rock shrine in 691/2 CE, when the Umayyads' under Caliph Malik make public the religion. It was only in the following decade that the Islamic coin reforms were adopted phasing out all images on coins and referencing the "Shahadah". Clearly Islam in the Persian Empire arrived some 60 years after the "Traditional Islamic Narratives" would like us to believe!

Symbol/flag is just a sign to identify which group, club, party, religion, country or ethnicity it is. In Islam, there is no specific symbol according to Holy Quran and Sahih Hadiths (except Shahada written in white cloth). Later, Muslim sultans used 'Crescent & Star' on their flags just to represent their Muslim empires (Golden age of Muslim civilization). It has no relationship with (Shirk) worship to something else or any kind of bogus explanations by non-muslims.
