No critique of your comments @spacetomato, but as a developer who has been a dev for 24 years, CIG has real version control and code design problems. We as customers shouldn't know so much about their internal code organisation. This just tells me they haven't designed their code in a sufficiently modular / decoupled way. The vibe (and it is a vibe, since I can't checkout the code and have a look for myself) is that their codebase is so big and so complex and co-dependant, that they rely on release branches as a compatibility platform for new features can be added to that branch. This doesn't mean those features will work on their target version, it simply means in isolation on an older code base, they work- mostly. They will still need to be functional, integration and end to end tested in their target version. If that sounds like I'm saying the testing isn't very useful, it is because that is exactly what I'm saying it is. Simplicity takes design and skill. Complexity is the default state when you have no clue. CIG's branching strategy is obviously complex. I'll leave it at that. /rant over

That is how altimeters work. all altitude's are relative to sea level. Height above ground (AGL) is a separate data point and should be in SC as well as IRL.
@CyphDragonАй бұрын
Not exactly true - _barometric_ altimeters are relative to the pressure they are configured for. Radar altimeters, however, aren't relative. Most modern jetliners have both types of altimeters and switch between them as appropriate. It's pretty easy to imagine a case in the future that barometric altimeters have been left behind for radar/lidar altimeters, because a) there is no pressure in space, b) the atmospheric density on different planets would likely also be different, which would require a recalibration of the system on every planet, and c) the ports used for baro altimeters are actually pretty fragile, and likely would not be a good option to be used on space-going craft. Far easier/cheaper/more reliable to have a downward-facing solid-state radar altimeter that doesn't require anything but power than the complex and fragile analog baro system that's used in aircraft...or even something more advanced than either concepts.
@b5fan504Ай бұрын
@@CyphDragon true and you're on the edge of being pedantic and I love it. But the reference is sea-level or, ASL.
@CyphDragonАй бұрын
@@b5fan504 you miss my point...let me try simplifying. Can you answer these questions? -How would a baro altimeter work in the vacuum of space? -How would a baro altimeter work in environment with different atmospheric pressures at their sea-level equivalent? We already have technology arguably better than fragile baro altimeters, and have for decades. Current aircraft procedures, including references to ASL, were written when baro altimeters were the state-of-the-art, and haven't been changed because they're "good enough" and the aircraft industry as a whole generally reacts to new technology incredibly slowly...most GA aircraft still use leaded fuels ffs. Pretty sure you would be yelling about "MAH IMMERSION!" if our magic single-stage-to-orbit spaceships needed to be filled up on 100LL AvGas instead of hydrogen...but that is as widespread in modern aviation as baro altimeters and ASL reference points. I'll also note that current commercial aircraft rely on *radar* altimeters during take-off and landing, when knowing your altitude accurately is critical, not baro altimeters. Whatever the display is labeled, doesn't really matter. It's easy enough to change "ASL" to "AGL" or reinterpret the "s" to mean "surface" rather than "sea." Why would we ever imagine magic space ships would still be using technology that is already outdated and (slowly) being replaced?

@CyphDragonАй бұрын
Disagree with your 2nd point. It's only more useful today because of the way aircraft procedures are performed...which were written before radar altimeters were commonplace or reliable. Given that this is a space game, in the future, and we're visiting planets that aren't Earth, baro altimeters probably got ditched a long time ago, for spacecraft at least. Radar/lidar would likely be far more useful, given there isn't some new technology (perhaps alien in origin?) that's replaced even today's state-of-the-art. How would a baro altimeter work on a planet/moon with limited or no atmosphere? It wouldn't, so obviously a different tech is being used in our magic single-stage-to-orbit spacecraft...

Problem is that it's very rare only one cause for a bug, so if you fix it and then release content it might reappear again, making fixing it a large waste of time when they're in the content release phase of the development. Besides, even if you fix all the bugs it's not much of a game until server meshing, so there's that. We won't be seeing a change of direction in that regard until they reach a feature complete state, as much as it pains me to say, but it's the truth and we have to live with a buggy game for a couple more years

Why would they take the time and energy to launch the new codebase in isolation if 4.0 is coming Q4? To me this reads like they know 4.0 is nowhere near ready so they're separating whatever they can get in ASAP before meshing. Not a bad thing at all in itself, actually a great idea to pre-test this stuff, but also not exactly confidence inspiring for the actual 4.0 timeline at this point.

At some point 3.24.2 is going to open up to the waves and then 4.0 will be in Evocati hands. Having 3.24.2 already using the 4.0 codebase means theres alot less stability testing that has to happen because alot of the code will already be in. So you'll need to know your ship to be prepared for that... (RECLAIMER). But nonetheless... it does definitely work reliably. I think I noticed it coming on at around 1000m above ground. You know, I don’t comment much, but it’s pretty telling who you are as a person where you deleted one podcast with a KZbinr who you disagreed with, and essentially called him a racist with no evidence, virtue signaling your way to the high ground and perpetuating cancel culture. Then, not once, but in two videos you don’t even name the streamer, SaltEMike’s, in where the CIG dev posted that information. If I had to guess, it’s also because you disagree with his opinion too.

Stop pushing "biggest patch yet" with every few patches. How many times have we seen CIG say x, y, and Z would be in a patch only to deliver X.

It's too late. Players have left in droves. Don't believe me? Look at your friends list and your orgs. No one is there anymore. It's going take a lot more course corrections at CIG before it gets back to get the player counts back to what they were a year ago.

I hate to tell you, but real world altimeters are calibrated to sea level (ASL). That's why Air Chart Maps have minimum altitudes marked and ALL airports show their altitude. If CIG changes this to show altitude above ground level (AGL) you are going to find that flying low will make your altimeter even MORE useless, as the altitude changes so fast, flying over a hill, mountain or canyon at speed, that you can't react in time and crash. Good luck! (you'll need it) Personally, I only use the altimeter to tell me if I'm high enough to use the Quantum drive or not. Otherwise, I fly by the seat of my pants, but then, I've been flying flight simulators since 1983.

I'm curious on how they will address larger cargo ships like the Hull E. Best way I can think of is them allowing us to transport entire grids, so that we can completely fill a hull E in as little as 10-30 minutes, which is FAR better than 1-3 hours.

The Corsair is NOT supposed to be an explorer lol. It was very tongue-in-cheek called an "eXplOrER" during concept and release. More like 'Explore that Ships Cargo haul' was the true intention from Drake, but they couldn't say that. If you don't believe me, go back and watch the concept vids.
@VenhiliАй бұрын
**All ships are subject to change** Besides that, it's not like the Corsair isn't capable of being a good piracy ship, it just means you need at least 2 other people to make full use of it
@Power5Ай бұрын
@@Venhili 3 and that rear turret is controlled by the same person who is now controlling the chin weapons. Opposite ends of the ship opposite vertical fields of fire. One he has control over for where to shoot and when to fire, the other he has a few degrees of control over where to shoot and when to fire. Would have rather seen it just get s4 weapons to take some punch out of it. They removed the gimbal size debuff and are confused as to why the corsair is being used by so many people. Now has less pilot firepower than the $50 cheaper taurus which is also more maneuverable and has more hull HP. Wonder how long till CIG is confused as to why the connies are getting so many kills. When will those co-pilots be charged with pushing the fire button from their seats next to the pilot? Give right lower gun to the right co-pilot and left lower gun to the left co-pilot. Pilot gets to keep control of both upper guns.

"Lackluster year"? Are we even playing the same game? The freight elevators fundamentally changed every aspect of the cargo handling in the game, it's like a completely different experience. That alone was bigger than anything introduced in 2022. Persistent hangars is a feature that people have been waiting on for half a decade! And it, too, also fundamentally changes the logistics of loading your ship, equipping your toon, and heading out. Everything is so much faster having an Nursa in the corner to repair light wounds or top off food/drink in between cargo runs, and having ships or vehicles on standby ready to be deployed makes things waaaaay faster than usual. Plus, having a crate with pre-kitted equipment makes re-gearing up so much faster than before. I don't even see how people can call that lackluster???? Plus, the distribution centres have added whole new ways to play the cargo loops and the combat loops, and the inclusion of NPCs that now venturing outside and around the bunkers adds an entirely new element of tactical challenges to the game. Plus, the new hunting missions are extremely fun and add some much needed exploration to the game along the planetary surfaces that wasn't there before. That's not even mentioning things like the new ATLS and the overhauled Star Map that makes searching and QT'ing to places so much more intuitive and convenient. It's such a HUGE boon being able to just search for the destination instead of fumbling around in the old Star Map. It seems like content creators get stuck in their own little echo-chamber of negativity sometimes without looking at the big picture. Compare the features that were included this year compared to the last two years and this year brought in a TON of stuff. I'm not even sure at this point what would make content creators NOT think a year is lackluster. Even if 4.0 slips into 2025, this year was pretty significant in terms of content, missions, stability, and fundamentally changing how the logistics are handled from a player-to-player and player-to-group standpoint (i.e., group hauling, group combat, etc). Oh yeah, and I completely forgot about Master Modes...
