What ppl aren’t mentioning about the 7800x3d to 9800x3d upgrade is the current price of the 7800x3d on the used market. I sold my 7800 for $450, paid $75 to upgrade to the 9800 that runs wayyyy cooler and is unlocked for OC.

Super grateful to have such a knowledgeable and resourceful individual as you in the Star Citizen community. I hoped my pc would last 7 years when I built it, which was 6 years ago, even with only 16GB RAM it still runs SC fine. If SQ42 was launching in 2025 I would probably build one for that, but now I'm hoping this sales period next year will be a nice time. I don't know, do you others who enjoy having a high end PC like to build a really powerful one to last for many years and probably have no resale value, or do you constantly update to new components and sell the old ones? I see the usual retailer here in Norway (Komplett) has started experimenting with a monthly cost instead of upfront, where you can return the product for a newer one every 24 months, you at least don't have to bother with selling privately that way.

Been on AM4 since 2017, same mobo, 3 different cpus (1700, 3800x, 5800x3d), will always love this platform!. I still find somehow "difficult" to upgrade, playing at 3440x1440 with an 4080 will give me a nice jump, but maybe not so much. So I'm actually thorn on what to do. I'll probably wait the release of 9900x3d and 9950x3d, cause I also use my rig for editing and compositing, so more cores will be useful for sure. Thanks for the tests!

Thanks for the review, appreciate all the efforts to bring us your findings. On optimisation, generally you get that towards the end of development cycle (avoiding duplication of effort). What should make the biggest improvement to performance will be fully functional Vulkan drivers including proper multi-threading support etc. If they focus on anything right now it's that. Especially (and hats off to you for testing current builds :) given current state of the game. Given the results and general good reviews for the 9800X3D for gaming generally, it suggests further improvements available for the CPU when Vulkan/ optimisation arrives.

In a very weird spot with my setup at the moment. Running a 3080 and 5800X3D. For all other games the CPU is still easily enough, overkill even, making a 50 series card (when available) the logical next upgrade. But.... I do play a lot of star citizen where the 3080 still isn't really being pushed at 4k with dlss.... Making the 9800X3D very tempting.

@ It’s a 20-30% gain in every game so long as your graphics card can spit out the fps so I’d say it is if you’re ok getting what’s basically a whole new PC since you’ll need a whole new motherboard. The 9800x3d / 5090 - is a generation I plan to skip this time. 9800x3d is clearly faster, but it's not enough to chase the upgrade at this point. Moore's law's insight into the 5090 MSRP has also made me consider skipping that GPU generation with my recent refreshes. I'm good for now! Love the work you do, my systems are 100% SC dedicated. The biggest difference to previous generations is that the 9800x3d can actually be overclocked without cooking itself due to the 3d cache now being below the ccd. Since the game likes clock speed this can be a significant factor for a purchasing decision. If you leave it stock you wont gain nearly as much. The correct ram and settings for the infinity fabric are as important as ever.

I'm planning out my first gaming desktop after four years of gaming laptops; the plan is AM5 with a 4070 ti super and a 9800x3d but when i put it in pc parts picker the price was $480, now it's $630 and I'm starting to wonder if i should go with a cheaper non x3d just to start gaming and grab the 9800x3d when the prices get more reasonable. Any suggestions?

I got a 5800x3d and let me tell you why I wont upgrade. Its still a wicked cpu for a good price. And I appreciate the hardware videos and support enthusaists that want to do that sort of thing but lets be real here, CIG need to optimize the game. The game is really unoptimized and it requires a lot of work. Typically if you get a mid-range to high-range build you'll get 40-100 fps for Star Citizen, but you'll fly in every other AAA optimized game. Hope people keep this in mind. In addition, it doesn't matter what CPU you have if CIG have server problems.

Same , 5950 X , with a 3090 kingpin. Still manage to get over 170 FPS in arena commander . At this point, it's the game Engine and CIG , that has to start doing something. But hey , the sales department is more important .😅

So would you say that 9800X3D would be currently best choice for upgrading PC if you have 3 year old computer? Or should I wait bit to see whether Intel has something it's sleeves? I have been running intel computer quite some time, because intel has worked so reliable so I have been a bit hesitant to change to AMD.

@@sascha9213 That's because you are CPU bottlenecked. I'd do what Tenpound suggested, get the 9800x3d but try it with the 3080Ti (and DLSS) first and see how you feel about performance after that.

I just purchased a 7800x3d/4090 system in October. I gambled that the 9800x3d wouldn't be head-and-shoulders faster than the 7800 and I appear to have been correct. I won't be upgrading any time soon.

I have an AM4 5800X mated with a Tuff 3070 and 64GB of ram. I average 55fps at 4k with it dipping to 38fps (still get 15fps to 23fps moments), I monitor everything in my system and have noticed what the cpu and gpu handle seems to be inconsistent in game. Some days I'll log in and gpu working at 80% - 90%, cpu at 35%... then other days gpu and cpu at 96% - 99%. I've been almost considering a 5950 just for the extra cores.

Is that 5800X3D in your tests running 4450mhz consistently? Also, note that DLSS/FSR costs upwards of 10-15% cpu overhead. In this game, I'd definitely advise against using it...

Great video ! I run on AM4 with 5800x3d. I just upgraded from a 3090 to a 4080 and it's already night and day for me as I play in 4K. I was wondering if I should pull the trigger and continue to upgrade my rig toward AM5 with a 7800x3d or 9800x3d. Tough call indeed. Granted I will get about 15 to 20 fps more in main cities, but the extra cost required for that upgrade doesn't seem to be worth it in the end. How long do we spend in main cities before flying somewhere easier on entity counts anyway ? I think they just need to optimize their game and as you shew on your last clip in Pyro the best gear can't do much vs a game in alpha state which is not yet optimized ! I will try to keep cool with Black Friday ! :D

For me I dont think it's the right time to upgrade from my 3080 and 5800X3D. My system is okay-ish, and as you pointed out late in the video, a lot of the poor performance is on CIG's end with how they release unoptimized builds with heavy logging etc. My plan is to keep my current computer until the next generation of RTX cards, and then buy a brand new computer with the best hardware available which *should* be good enough to run both SC and Sq42. Hopefully that's not too naive!

Unless the 5700X3D fails to hit a locked 60 by 1.0, I'm sticking with it. CIG isn't even nearly done optimizing, and frame gen / AFMF breaks through CPU bottlenecks, nevermind that I'll be GPU limited at 4K. It's just too much bang-for-buck to upgrade from without more compelling reasons. 🤷🏿‍♂️

The 9800X3D has provided the smoothest experience I've ever had in Star Citizen. PBO + 200 Max Clock -40 Curve Optimizer 48 GB DDR5 8400 2100 Infinity Fabric It's a shame that the 285K was a disappointment for gaming. A well overclocked 14900KS can still contend with the 9800X3D in some games, but at insane risk of degradation or just an overwhelmingly high power draw. Maybe if the rumours are true, they'll put the IMC on the compute tile with the 385K. The 285K has a 77ns roundtrip latency for the IMC, whereas Raptor Lake and Lunar Lake have a 55ns latency.
