This was a great episode and drew inspiration from a great source, the movie "The Enemy Below" (1957) starring Robert Mitchum and Curd Jürgens (Curt Jurgens) based on the novel of the same name by Commander D. A. Rayner. The American Destroyer vs German U Boat becomes the USS Enterprise vs Romulan Bird Of Prey. The captains engage in a battle of wits and earn a grudging respect for each other learning that under a different set of circumstances, they could have been friends...

Yes, the battle and respect between Kirk and the Romulan captain was very similar to The Enemy Below. But this Trek episode included a more important social commentary, on of racial distrust during time of war. Stiles, IMO, embodied the fear and racial predjudice that created the Japanese internment camps of WWII.
@erzahler1930

Yes, very much so. I, too, have seen this movie, "The Enemy Below." The scenarios are very similar. Two ships from each - from the movie, the destroyer and the submarine; from ST, the starship and the bird-of-prey. The circumstances and time line are different, but the premise is similar. Both ships in each case play a deadly game of "Cat and Mouse." In "Enemy Below" (EB), the destroyer is on the surface, trying to destroy a submarine attempting to deliver a code book to an enemy warship. In "Balance of Terror" (BT), a starship attempts to destroy an enemy ship believed to have destroyed several Neutral Zone outposts. The writers must've referenced the novel as a general guide. The similarities between EB and BT are rather uncanny. The submarine dives into the water in EB; in BT, the bird-of-prey disappears behind a invisible cloak. The writer(s) wrote a fine story for this episode. This is how all space battles should have been fought, especially in Next Gen and others.

After Kirk called for Battle Stations he looks up at Spock. No words were needed - you knew exactly what he was thinking. Now that's good acting and directing! The first season was the best because there was so much depth of character. Good Science Fiction always involves the way in which humans react and struggle to retain their humanity in the face of seemingly overwhelming technological change

Kirk looks directly at the viewer in terror when Spock tells him that the ship is on an exact heading a Romulan vessel would take to the neutral zone (at 6:55). I love that moment as well as when he looks up at Spock, fearing the worst, knowing his responsibility.

I agree. However, the Science Fiction movies themselves were actually a reflection of the Cold War between the United States and the old Soviet Union. America was always portrayed as the earth, and the Soviet Union always portrayed as space aliens invading the world. But what weapon were the 'space aliens', aka the Soviet Union using to destroy the earth, aka America? Simple - the doctrines of Marxist/Socialist Communism. This is why the sci-fi movies in that time period are so memorable, even to this day.

Someone pointed me to a list of deleted scenes from TOS. There were two big deleted scenes in this one. The ship model seen at 4:45 created did not look like the stage direction for the live actors AT ALL. It was supposed to be cloned Earth Starship tech from a race supposedly having no Earth contact in over a century. THAT is what causes all the concern over spies on the ship. The original stage notes: "The attacking vessel may now be seen as some modified version of a starship saucer main section, but with dark markings on its underside suggesting a bird of prey with wings half spread. And centered there is a threatening looking 'weapons tube' device..." The dialog from Hanson: "You see it Enterprise! Earth design. Warn Earth..... (radio crackle) espionage.,stolen our design, traitors....". Which they had to cut short due to the actual model. Therefore Styles proves to be valid in his fears of spies. Maybe the model department just goofed or didn't get the memo. Maybe they decided to change it after the live action was shot. The model is evocative of the Enterprise but doesn't look like the Enterprise in this or other shots There is no prominent torpedo tube affixed to the outside of the ship. The plasma bolt is just illustrated coming out of nowhere specific on the model shown here. Scotty later reports their drive is simple impulse. This is a line Star Trek would later regret, since they needed warp speed adversaries. It however makes sense as the Saucer Section of Earth ships has only the impulse drive. It is inferred as the older design of Earth ships with the star drive section added later as time/space factor tech developed (mentioned in The Cage by Dan Durea Jr) The last scene cut was Captain Kirk saluting the Romulan Commander on the view screen. You see it chopped off in what they broadcast. Cool stuff. It is not the only time set direction and the model department horribly deviated from the script and the editors made the best of it: Tomorrow is Yesterday they got the slingshot effect totally wrong City on the Edge of Forever: the Guardian*s* were ancient statues that spoke, not the portal device. Set director was off (sick maybe?) and an assistant filled in to build planet gateway on his own. The director was pissed when he saw the result, but went with it due to time and cost. Doomsday Machine: was supposed to be an elaborate multiarmed ship that could take a planet or ship apart. Instead it became a windsock dipped in stage plaster.

@@domainofthesun4400 startrekhistory.com/DS3.html Caution, the poster's gloss has some misleading imaginings comments like they meant to do it with the model, but the model shown in broadcast doesn't fit these stage direction notes at all. That's the problem with seeing Star Trek as most people under 56 did. All out of sequence, TNG then Movies and TOS, then other series, finally Enterprise. I watched it from The Man Trap forward starting in Sept of 66. I know the only "Federation" in the first 18 episodes was Balok's First Federation. Just look at the full scenes and the script. It is not mentioned why they edited it out,but they were going a different way and then heavily edited it prior to broadcast, to make it just an unfounded racism thing with Styles. The Romulans were metaphors eventually for the Red Chinese. Vulcans were at times very Japanese and at time like British Intellectuals with Jewish ceremonies. In this episode they represent the Japanese, thus the racial similarities. Remember this was 1966. WWII was only two decades before and TOS was originally made for Dads not kids.

Interesting. The only early production information I have on this episode is from the James Blish novelization adapted from draft scripts rather than the broadcast episode itself (this was before TOS was ever shown in the UK). According to the Blish version, Stiles was/is the Enterprise's Second Officer, who would presumably be in command in the absence of the Captain and First Officer. He was to have died with Tomlinson in the phaser control room; Spock's moment of glory was solely being able to survive the coolant leak and fire the ship's phasers at the critical moment. Also, Stiles does point out the Romulan ship details being similar to the Enterprise's, but his points and his antipathy against Spock seemed to be based less on the possibility of Romulans employing spies and more on Vulcans (here called "Vulcanites")organically being traitors for the benefit of blood-kin races. I suspect that this sub-plot was dropped during the later stages of script development as adding too much complication; simply making Stiles a bigot who has a change of heart after he's ironically rescued by Spock was probably felt to be enough of a morality lesson.
@STho205

@@baraxor yes and nobody seemed to be pissed that klingons look like humans from a Charlie Chan movie or Ming the Merciless. Though the cruiser v sub action plot is just a SF adaptation of Enemy Below, which all the adult male audience in 1966 would appreciate....the subtly in the first 9 episodes filmed is Spock is a metaphor for a Japanese officer, now on a US ship in 1966. The N Vietnamese attacked our totally peaceful patrol ships in the Gulf of Tonkin...yep! Sneak attack like YOU KNOW WHO. Obviously a thing with "these people". Several of McCoy's banter lines in the first episodes give that impression..."Is that why your people were conquered " was just one. After Babel DC Fontana made Vulcans intellectual cold Englishmen and they dropped the exotic asian culture with a touch of East European Jew that you saw in Amok Time. Spock also later states that Vulcan was never conquered.

I wonder when, or maybe the technology already exists that will allow the perfect computer generated voices of all the original Star Trek actors as well as exact computer actor and prop replicas. Star Trek could then literally pick up where they left off. It would be as if the 76th episode was just the beginning. The only difference noticed would be that Episode 77 (And that would be a great name for the group that does this 'Episode 77') would have much greater clarity and props and scenes that Roddenberry could only have dreamed of. I hope I live long enough to see it. I'm not not talking about obvious computer generated programs. I'm talking programs that when viewed you could not tell that it was not really William Shatner or any of the other actors. I'm talking seamless. And the acting will be generated from archived footage. The voices and all their intricacies exactly replicated. The facial expressions the same, mannerisms the same, walk & talk the same, humor the same. With that technology and skill nearly any actor from the past, any show or movie could be picked up exactly where it dropped off. Imagine a weekly series of Rhett and Scarlett and how they rebuild together after the civil war. The possibilities are endless. All those old TV shows you wished that they didn't end when they did all brought back as if the hands of time are rewound.

You know, I have had the very same thought as you did! Why not get everybody's permission to use their voices, and the way they the looked at that time to create a fouth as well as a fifth season, picking up whare the Original Star Trek series left off at. Bet it would sell and probsbly even take off so far and so fast, they couldn't keep up with it. Wish it would happen.

Is saddled with a dimwit of his own, sabotaging his every move. If you can't obey a just and lawful order then get out of the service. Marc Lenard in my opinion is a badly understed actor. Its a shame he didn't do many other projects. He brilliantly conveys the steadfast soldier surrounded by fools. Danger was his longtime companion. Also so were many idiots.

Old naval thing, iirc, for superior officers to call their juniors "Mister so-and-so", rather than by rank. Alsp goes the other way in the Starfleet - see Voyager episode 1 where Cpt. Janeway explains to Ens. Kim that she doesn't like the old tradition of calling a superior officer 'sir' and prefers to be called 'captain'.

They also magically grew a FTL drive they didn't have in this episode, yet no change to their ships visually since their non warp ships obviously already had star drive nacelles. They dropped the plasma torpedo from "The Deadly Years" because it would have destroyed the Enterprise being shot from three ships at the same time. Plot Armour. ... Or did they use it to just chair shaking effect??? I'll have to look at the broadcast copy before the CGI coloring book squad.

@@STho205 the original 1960s non remastered version of the deadly Years clearly shows the plasma torpedoes being fired at them. Of course by that time the Enterprise had taken the abuse dished out by more powerful weapons from Nomad and the Doomsday machine

@STho205 3 жыл бұрын
@@mm-gl7sz yes, it was just reused footage for the whole space VFX. Magically three plasma torpedo at a time in several salvos at close range only shook the confused guest star's pot belly. Most of season 2 space VFX were reused from season 1. Cleaned up in editing but stock shots. They no longer had the Romulan model either, as bunches of props and two wigs went missing after season one wrap according to the producer. The Klingon D7 wouldn't be built till season 3. You never saw Klingon ships until season 3 and then they were in lots of episodes. There was no fleet shown in S1 "Errand of Mercy" where Coon created Klingons and The Federation. None in Tribbles or Friday's Child. Season 3 had some new Enterprise VFX too and showed the wargame fleet. However season 2 was on a very tight budget. NBC refused to pay a cent more than the season 1 contracts, so Norway Corp / Paramount were to deny raises according to NBC instruction. Nimoy threatened to leave. Norway Corp screen tested two replacements from the Desilu stable to scare his agent. His agent complained to NBC. NBC said give him his raise (fanmail celebrity), but told Paramount they wouldn't pay for it. Nimoy's raise caused a raise for most of the supporting cast, and more money for Shatner. Oh the two screen tests became Spock's dad and his rival Staan. Season 2 had the smallest post production budget, but some of the best scripts. Also better Spock scripts because he was to earn his raise. Season 3 had good VFX (best of the series), but some reject scripts.

This episode beautifully displays the bane of every leader since time began. The stupid ass subordinate who bucks the reins and wants to do it his way. Mr. Styles is such a nimrod in this episode.
