The space hippie protest "Herbert, Herbert, Herbert!" is a gag, referring to Trek director Herb Wallerstein and executive producer Herbert F. Solow. (Spock tells Kirk that Herbert is an official in Federation history known for his "rigid patterns of thought")

I loved the way Star Trek's writers had all sorts of morals in the show. This one was a big warning about Cults. Very close to the bone considering what Star Trek grew into in later years.

It seems like every show in the decade had "that one" episode. Dick van Dyke had the "walnuts" episode, TOS had this, Dr. Who had a serial called "The Mind Robber", which is bizarre even by Dr. Who standards-including having a different actor play one of the companions in two episodes of the serial.

This would actually be the Skyfall of Star Trek. The questioning of whether the Federation was doing everything right and whether they had a right to impose their values on non-Federation worlds, etc. When I originally saw this episode, I thought they were all crazy and why were they fighting with the beloved Kirk. I see it from a completely different angle these days.

Kirk saved their lives, was following Starfleet orders(which a lot of times he didnt) & the hippies took illegal actions to steer the ship to where they wanted to go so i have ZERO sympathy for them. maybe your angle has changed again in the last 7 years

@Leo Peridot Kirk wanted to but he couldn't because one of them was the son of an alien diplomat who was negotiating on behalf of his people some sort of treaty with the Federation so if Kirk did what you suggested, it would've pissed off the diplomat and his people, caused an interstellar incident and reek political chaos across known space. To be honest though, if I were the alien diplomat, I'd understand if Kirk stunned my son and his friends and chucked them in the brig for being troublemakers.

Gene left ST then not because he had lost "interest" but the net' had changed ST to Friday nights and back then, a TV show on Friday nights was considered "Death" given the polls as no one "was home" watching tv shows then. Had the net' not changed the day and time Gene was going to stay with the series. I know this for a fact because I met him in '72 at the ST con in LA that Fall and asked him about it.
@danbasta36775 жыл бұрын
I very much agree with your written statement, and also the network wanted Gene to make it a space comedy which Gene outrightly refused to do so they did this to both Gene and the show so they had a good excuse to cancel the show because of poor nielson ratings.

Quite seriously-and I first saw this episode many years ago and several times after that-the final chanting in this scene made me think just now of a great many campus protests and confrontations and whatnot in our 21st century days. How very fascinating that we are reliving an odious parody of the "free speech movement at Berkeley," as Admiral Kirk once famously put it. I suspect the radicals of the 1960s were a bit more noble than our current youth: or indeed than the kids in this episode tragically in search of Eden.

@stormcutter595 жыл бұрын
The greatest myth of the 20th century was how "noble" the protestors of the 60s and 70s actually were. They acted almost EXACTLY like the shitty ass generation you see outside with their screaming and hollering. Where do you think these people came from? You think they learned this from nowhere?! No. The hippie generation were the beginning of the downfall of American society. Self hating, nihilistic, paranoid, sensitive, immature, disrespectful, irrational, unreasonable, and destructive to both themselves and others. And since they like to push their idealogy om everyone as some sort of law, I would call them fascists as well. This episode is a great representation of the naivity and destructive immaturity of the brainwashed liberal mob of the late 60s. We are now paying for it today.
