The thing about Star Trek is, when it was good, it was great. Some of the best television ever produced. That episode that they are referring to, Darmok, is actually one of the best episodes. And Jadzia Dax is a Trill. A symbiotic species that lives by inhabiting hosts. When a host dies, the Trill is implanted into a new host, but retains all of the memories of the previous host lives. So when Sisko was calling Dax 'old man', it was an inside joke because Sisko knew Dax's previous host (who they showed in the clip) as an old man.

Some of the Original series is fantastic but I didn't fully appreciate it until much later. TNG has such a special place in my heart. I dont consider myself a diehard Trekkie by any means but I do find myself watching TNG and DS9 a lot. Also Quark is such a hilarious character.

Then you have the first 10 Star Trek movies with the first 7 having the TOS cast, with the 7th movie mostly having The Next Generation cast, then Star Trek First Contact which was the first sole TNG movie followed by Insurrection, then Nemesis, the final TNG movie. After that you have the Star Trek reboot movies: Star Trek 2009, Star Trek Into Darkness and finally Star Trek Beyond. All in all, that's about all the Star Trek there is.

Dax’s race is symbiotic so there are human-like people that are basically normal and then the worm that can be passed from host to host that carries their collected memories and knowledge so Sisko’s old friend’s memories are still alive inside of Jadzia (the young woman), but she is her own person. @@mitsakes8219 There was a version of this concept in the 1980’s version of the X-Men character Rogue. She had the ability to absorb the powers and personalities of other characters. Occasionally, through prolonged exposure or a traumatic event, the powers and personalities would become permanent making her increasingly more schizophrenic. It was a really good plot device in the hands of a writer like Chris Claremont. Incidentally, this is why the comics and movie versions of the character were so different. In the movie timeline, Rogue never absorbed Carol Danvers’ courage or her powers of super strength, partial invulnerability and flight.

There are ten Star Trek series at this point; Star Trek, ST The Animated Series, ST The Next Generation, ST Deep Space Nine, ST Voyager, Enterprise, ST Discovery, ST Strange New Worlds, Picard, ST Lower Decks. Discovery is a bit woke, but good otherwise. Enterprise is too light on good humor, but Lower Decks more than makes up for it. There's lots to like about all of the series, but there are episodes that are totally WTF? Chronologically; Enterprise, ST D, ST SNW, ST original, ST TAS, ST TNG, ST DS9, ST V, ST LD, Picard, then Discovery jumps 900 years forward in the third season. Star Trek, as a whole, takes on current social issues in parable form, but the best thing about it is all of the soft disclosure of the actual current level of technology and the actual structure of existence. The newer movies with Chris Pine as Captain Kirk explores an alternate timeline/universe from the rest of the series, aka the Kelvin Timeline. Hope that helps.

You got Star Trek the original series, 3 seasons in 1960s. The Animated Series 2 seasons if I recall correctly in the 70s. 6 movies with that ship and crew 1979-early 90s. The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager each 7 seasons taking place 100 years after the original series. 4 movies with Picard and the TNG crew. 4.5 seasons of Star Trek Enterprise prequel series 100 years BEFORE the original series. Reboot movies with Chris Pine as captain Kirk. Star Trek Discovery, Star Trek Lower Decks, and Star Trek Picard which is like 30 years after TNG. I haven't watched Discovery, Lower Decks, or Picard... but everything prior to the Reboot movies is drastically great tv writing, ensemble cast, and commercial break - driven suspense.

Ok, couple of explanations. Dax is a female, but there's a 'simbient' creature, much like a parasite, but friendly, and intelligent, living inside her body. Dax, the female, agreed to be the host for the simbient. So, no, she's not a guy, but the previous host was a guy, and the simbient lived in him, until he died, then the simbient was transferred into the female retaining the memories of the 'old man' the simbient was living in previously. When he was an old man, he met Cisco who would refer to him as old man, so he's always referring to her as 'old man'. Also, the Sherlock Holmes episodes (there's 2 of them), the Holodeck isn't broken, it's taken over by the Moriarity character, who was inadvertently imbued with enough intelligence to be self aware, aware of what the holodeck is, etc... Normally characters created on the holodeck are much like NPCs in a video game, they don't know they're not real. Moriarity did know he was 'not real', and was aware though, of his existence. Also, Darmok is one of the best episodes, for one reason, Paul Winfield (who was also in Wrath of Khan), played the alien captain, and gave his life in the end to help overcome the language barrier. Those aliens communicated by metaphors, for example, if I were to say "Romeo at the balcony" to convey the concept of romance. You and I know the story, so we understand what it conveys, but humans, alien to their culture didn't understand what they were attempting to convey despite the translator translating words they understood. The grammar was fundamentally different. It's one of the top 5 episodes I'd say. Easily. Despite all of their mistakes, the conversation was pretty funny.

As a die hard Trekkie ('67) that saw the first rerun of the OS in the 70's, my rating is: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds DS9 Star Trek: Discovery - from season 3 Voyager The Original series Star Trek: Picard TNG (the best at the time, now pretty much unwatchable) Star Trek: Discovery season 1 & 2 Star Trek: Enterprise (Scott Bakula is so bad, imo he destroyed the serie, plus so many of the characters sounded like they came out of Deliverance; it's like MAGA made a Star Trek series.. The only reason it made the list at all is Jolene Blalock's character T'Pol, Jeffrey Combs as Shran & Molly Brink as Talas. With another captain & some minor tweaks it could have made the top 3, as the storyline is one of the best). Anyway, just my 2c.

Nah man, that last chick is still a woman, it's just her personality is a mix of hers, the symbiote creature she's hosting, and all the previous hosts that creature has lived in. The previous host happened to be a guy, and captain Sisco was friends with that guy. When that guy died they surgically moved the symbiote from his body into Jadzia (that chick).
