@josebrown5961

That’s the only thing that grinds your gears? What about… 1. The sheer size of that damn bridge, it’s a damn meeting hall! 2. Why does the captain go on away missions? She is riding on a ship that is at warp and somehow is being blown by wind? 3. And a rockslide is not an avalanche! 4. And you can’t go into warp while you’re in a planet’s atmosphere. The enemy ship did at the end of the “avalanche.” There is so much more…

So if the transporter was working fine right up to too much dust near when the storm hit the settlement, why didn't they: A) Beam the team to the bad guys ship instead of flying the bikes? And B) Beam the team out of the way of the avalanche? Remember Captain asked to be beamed into cave so it's not like they magically forgot they had transporters. It was very action packed which was excellent, but my god having to stop every 5-10 minutes to talk about their feelings which slows the pace right down. Also as a Captain, Micheal has a very huggy, teary-eyed casual, smiley relationship with her crew. Like a bunch of old mates having a lovely time.

That's modern. Or at least, that's how the writers think younger people try to be nowadays. They're not wrong i guess. Except they should add everyone being constantly on their phone writing angry tweets or making tik tok videos and refusing to work full-time. They should have people call in sick at least once a week. Oh and glue themselves to starships that use X fuel rather than Y fuel. Also protest against Androids not receiving free oil from the government or something. That would make it all even more trendy.

The thing is, JJ and Kurtsman did what JJ always does, he takes short cuts. In Trek they just eliminated what makes Star Trek always work for 50 years, time. So whenever Kirk or Picard , or whomever had to go to Rigel 9 or wherever it was usually a certain distance from where they were. You could always tell how important it was that they get there by the order the captain gives to the con, “Mr. ____ set course for ____warp factor 5, engage. If they really had to get there it was a higher warp. The next scene was usually some stuff that was the B story or some supporting to the main story. There was time. Then in the next scene they were on the bridge arriving at the planet. JJ took away the warp factors and Discovery and their Spore drive makes every trip instantaneous! No time.

First episode of S5 was ok. Some flashy vfx, etc, and action sequences. Some small moments of interaction with characters. Discovery works best for me if I view it as an action sf show without thinking too much. This might contradict what I feel makes up the traditional elements of what Star Trek is, but I have concluded that Discovery can only be judged against itself, if that makes sense. I agree it was an exciting episode, it passed quickly, and I wasn't bored. The ships digging into the ground sequence was a bit silly, they should've just hovered above the ground and extended shields, but hey, I guess they thought they wanted to make it more dramatic and create an atmosphere of minor peril 🙄😜

I appreciate your viewpoint and it has moderated my own a bit for the better, but I didn't care for this first episode of S5. I liked the second episode more. I can't believe how many cliches they were able to fit into this first episode. The cinematography was dark (to hide flaws in special effects?). Half the episode looked and sounded like a video game. Burnham's constant whispering voice annoyed me (she sounds great with her normal voice when she projects). I found the love connections juvenile and the humor corny. After all Burnhan's crying in previous episodes, I was glad to see her in take-control mode (with one slight watery-eye exception). I may sound overly critical but I do love Discovery and Burnham. And, like I said, I did enjoy S5 E2.

When Moll and Lok got away on Tatooine, they just sat there emoting. At first I shook my head when they wedged the starships in the ground. However they probably couldn't hover above the ground because the force of the avalanche would just push the ships back or up. To much force to hold with out an anchor. I think the handled it well. The angle of the ships made since as far as forcing the flow up a bit. And we did see them put discovery in space dock. Still a head shaker but at least it was entertaining. After the success of Picard S3 they learned to leverage the old series more. It is a great start to the season.

I've never liked Burnham at all and yet there she is, front and centre hogging all the interesting settings (The actor is fantastic mind you, i just do not like the character at all). The rest of the characters are quirky which is fine, but aside from Saru, I simply don't get technical competency from them - I don't believe that they are qualified to do what they say they are doing in universe. In Strange New Worlds, i bought the majority of the cast in the roles they were in. Disco has felt off since season 1 and it continues to be so into this new season.

They tried way too hard to make every single line of dialogue to be clever, witty banter. Except for the times they would stop everything so that the characters could get all emotional. Michael and Saru had the exact same “You made me a better being” conversation about five times. Credit to the writers for making Tilly even more annoying than ever. If she’s the lead of “Star Fleet Academy” it’s going to be unwatchable. Did Wilson Cruz threaten to quit unless he got more screen time? He’s in practically every scene, doing very non-doctory things. The starships crashing into the planet was just stupid. And the Red Directive mission went from ultra top secret hush hush to everyone and his brother knowing the deepest secret in the history of the galaxy in under 5 minutes.

Why? Why the need to just make everything so unattractive and just so stomach churning? Everything is so woke and everything is just so emotional at the expense of the series. And Tilly... they are talking about giving her her own series - you have to be kidding me right?

Discovery Front loads seasons really I have watched all 4 seasons and it turns in to pap by the end with bullshit plots and a lack of planning every time it's why I have no faith as the biggest problem of Discovery is the same as doctor who and so many other new shows they all have Buffy the vampire slayer problem with the plot revolving the characters but also all the universe too and it's why it fails so hard the only other time that was used before was Season 3 of Enterprise, pre that there were individual stories with say best of both worlds but if the ship and crew was lost the universe would continue it doesn't rely on everything in the universe being a keystones of discovery. Ultimately discovery fails because it wants to be high drama but it lacks the characters or plots necessary mainly because the writing team are popcorn writers not say The Nolan brothers with West World which has great writing because it has the bravery and logic of letting characters die.

The arguing between captains gets old real fast! The constant FEELINGS, is tiresome and forced. Everything is so stagnant. That blue light for everything gives me migraines! Did they really have to slam into the planets surface to stop the avalanche? I highly doubt Michael would have survived going to warp mag locked to a ship! I think less is more! ‘Thrilling sequence’ that has Burnham behaving like flying through space, again, and single handedly disabling a spacecraft, while travelling at warp speed, and generally fast’n-furiously sabotaging anything and every obstacle. Again. At will apparently. While forcefully notifying less able (men) that, I’ve got this brah, isn’t exactly what I’d call great sci-fi/writing/drama/plot development. And that’s an indication that-strap on your woke-men are all idiots, and the LGBTQ ‘network’ 900 years in humanities future appears to have regressed to insults, narrowness and put downs of all other life choices, here we go again-nothing has changed on Discovery.

I’m definitely not as excited about this as you are! If you want to compare it to Star Wars, then it’s most comparable to the two worst Star Wars movies, The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker! I do like the TNG tie in, that wax one of the best episodes of that series. However there is one common thread happening with some new Star Trek series and that’s the relying in TNG to make them good, this only applies to season 3 of Picard and now Discovery.

Oh yes... did you see the "fight" scene at Freds? It was amateur and pathetic. And the sand vehicles - the scene was way too long... you go from wasting time in that scene to another time waste of a scene with Saru and his Vulcan gf. It's so cringe, it's so pathetic and it's so amateurish. All the characters are so obnoxious and eminently unlikeable.

I thought that sequence where the starships dug into the ground was BS as well but for a different reason. Even back in TOS, phasers were strong enough to vaporize asteroids, in the 31st century they would be able to simply shoot "something" that would turn that avalanche to dust thus saving the city. It might leave a windy dust storm but that would be it.

The new season of Star Trek Discovery (season 5) asserts that the Progenitors "created" humanoid life in the galaxy through the use of some sort of incredibly powerful technology. This is a false notion as even the Progenitor message seen in the episode of TNG titled "The Chase" communicates to Picard and everyone else present that they "guided" the evolution on primordial worlds where life was in its infancy. The technology to achieve this level of genetic manipulation definitely existed during the 24th century TNG era and beyond. The story arc is just attempting to cater to the audience this show has alienated time and again and is based on the ancient Sumerian story about the Annunaki and how they genetically altered lifeforms already in existence at the time. The Progenitors stated that they added elements to "primordial" worlds where life had already begun. This notion that they used some kind of technology to "create" life in the galaxy is complete nonsense. Whatever technology they used to add traits and messages in the DNA of races throughout that area of the galaxy need not be any more advanced than the technology available to Federation medical personnel from the 24th century on. The Progenitors did not "create" life and never claimed to. They modified it. It is literally the story of ancient Sumeria and the creation of humanity. This fact also brings up another issue. For a majority of all of Star Trek, genetic engineering has been Illegal and those who were genetically engineered were barred from serving in key positions of society yet it turns out that most of the races in this area of the galaxy are in fact genetically engineered. The next issue is with the new captain. Yet another white male who can't seem to do anything right ends up getting forced to retire to only be demoted and "saved" by space jesus Bernham. I am eager for this show to just end. It's been nothing but contradictions piled with akward emotional baggage at inappropriate moments followed up by rediculous plot threads. With that said, there are obviously people who must enjoy it, so more power to ya if you do.

Right so you missed the part where the unattractive vulcan said to the unattractive sarua about feelings and about Michael saying to the unattractive Saru about missing him if he takes the new post. Genuinely every looks so unattractive and coupled with the nonsense dialogue and the silly story line, the poor pacing and genuinely just a poor show, it's exacerbated. I am trying to enjoy it but the woke nonsense coupled with the questionable, stupid choices for characters speaks volumes. So don't worry, you will get your wish for more emotional garbage.

I'm not sure I like the tie-in to an episode that's considered a bit divisive. While I liked the episode when it aired 30 years ago, it's considered by some in the community too expository as the to the origins of humanoids in general rather than leaving it a big mystery. I hope they don't go (ALIEN) 'Prometheus / Covenant' on us!

SPOILER FOR WHOLE SEASON BUT ONLY FROM CLIPS AT END OF EPISODE ONE THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN SHOWING REST OF SEASON. At the end of the first episode when they show short clips of the rest of the season. There is 2 clips that show a ship coming up to a constitution class ship surrounded by dark green looking fog or whatever in space it would be. Maybe not in space but seems to be. You can see it is the Enterprise, with 1701 on the hull, from Robert April, Pike, and Kirks time before the second refit from the movies, just like how it was before the Discovery traveled to the 32nd century. After that clip is another that is a lot easier to see of what must be the Enterprise out of the green fog and clearly shown with a tractor beam or some type of light hitting or coming from the Enterprise itself. Going to be very interesting to see what that is about. Im hoping they dont have to option to travel back to their time but we will see. The clip with the green fog and seeing 1701 on the hull is a very fast clip and you have to pause it to see it. Im wondering if anyone else here seen those clips.

@@2007seno Rainbow wokedom? Get the hell out of here. Star Trek has always preached diversity, inclusion and equity, more or less.
