Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Episode 7 "Dominion". The episode opens with an unexpected appearance from Tuvok, played by Tim Russ, who reunites with Seven, played by Jeri Ryan. The crew is on a mission to locate William Riker, who was taken into custody by the Changeling-infested Starfleet. As the crew tries to uncover the true identity of Tuvok, they discover that they are dealing with another Changeling. Later, the crew discusses how they can stop the Changelings and save Riker. Meanwhile, Data's current Lore-shaped predicament is discussed, with Lore's cruel and snide personality clashing with Data's. Lastly, Vadic is reprimanded by the disembodied Changeling head for failing to capture Jack, and she is now prepared to do whatever it takes to bring the Changelings to victory.

Vadic saying of Jack: "I thought you'd be taller" is a trope from a bunch of movies and games about how you expect someone very difficult to kill (or capture) to be much more impressive both physically and intellectually. The line was arguably made most famous about S.D. "Bob" Plissken, (played by Kurt Russell) and is the opening line of "Escape from L.A." The running gag in the original movie, "Escape from New York", was "I heard you were dead", which was a homage to the John Wayne film Big Jake.

Hope you don't get upset for me pointing this out but at 3:35 - You forgot to also mention that Seven mentioned that she also had a procedure to stabilize her neural pattern, this was also a test because the real Tuvok would know that it was Tuvok himself that helped to stabilize Seven's neural pattern with a mindmeld in the Season 5, Episode 7 of Voyager called "Infinite Regress"

@LCARSDATANODE
@LCARSDATANODE 10 ай бұрын
its because the first two were dedicated to agendas instead of focusing on telling a story. Patrick Stewart used his platform to send a message. From Wikipedia: The producers focused on differentiating the season from previous franchise installments and rehabilitating the Romulan and Borg species. The story and setting take inspiration from the political landscape of Brexit and Donald Trump, as well as the Syrian refugee crisis. The season features special guest stars reprising their roles from The Next Generation and other Star Trek media.

The floating head says "Their kind is beholden to a singular flesh. Dismember one from the other". The thing may have meant tear a person, an individual, apart, but "Dismember one from the other" sounds like separating an individual from a group. It also doesn't refer to itself in the singular; as in "I", but instead uses "We" when it says "We Must Have The Boy".

The opening scene has great writing/acting and tons of tension. Seven's cat-and-mouse game is a roller-coaster with us initially thinking it's Tuvok knowing Seven won at Kal-toh but then it gets tripped up since it didn't know Tuvok saved Seven in "Infinite Regress" with a mind-meld. Watching Tim Russ turn from the Tuvok we know and love into something malevolent when caught, without changing form, is chilling. The writers rope viewers in; driving home how sinister the changelings are. Jeri Ryan and Tim Russ are great; in an interview Russ said he thought Jeri Ryan was amazing.

The transporters are the key. In the first episode Riker and Picard board the Titan via shuttle. Why not beam aboard? Then in another episode Riker asks why the transporter chief was chosen to be mimicked. At dinner with Shaw Picard gets a starbase closing wrong. Seven corrects him. Later on the bridge Seven orders maximum warp. Picard reminds her that engineering must be notified first when going maximum warp. And again she corrects him that protocol has changed. There was a reason the writers did this. Remember, changelings can't copy memories. So there's the reason they stole Picards body. The have figured out how to copy memories (up to the time of death) and implant them into a changeling. Picard is Picard until they "activate" him on Frontier day. And why didn't Vadek want to transport to the Titan? No clue about Jack.

One thing that always stood out to me about "The Death of Data". Why didn't they simply make another Data by using his last transporter pattern and reassembling a new body for him? Since Data had no human soul, the only memories missing should have been from the time of the last transporter use. But who am I to question the writers?

I'm glad we didn't go through the rest of the season, after the Changeling reveal, being able to trust all the familiar faces. I'm a little upset at the possibility that Tuvok is dead at the hands of the Changelings, but there's some hope he's still alive, since Tim Russ confirmed he's in two episodes. Hopefully the second appearance is as Tuvok himself. I've really been enjoying this season, a big improvement over seasons 1 and 2, and the well placed hits right in the nostalgia.

Not my favorite ep thus far, but I trust Dave Cullen's account that EP7 and 8 should be watched back to back, so I'm looking very much forward to next week. One thing I didn't bought though was the identification of Jean-Luc. Number one; he's only supposed to hold a speech, not engage in negotiations with an enemy or something. And number two: if the security is infiltrated on the highest levels, the changelings could easily found a work-around. Most notable moment is when the face-thing tells Vadic that her species is expandable. That hints to the face not being a changeling but something else. Though I'm not sure if there is enough time left to introduce that certain species (we all have a suspicion who they might be) into the mix.
@billkeithchannel

Borg is a #1 suspect since Picard's body still had residual nano-bots. I like the Locutus/Changeling hybrid resurrection theory. The other is Species 8472 and is alluded to with tholonium-847.

Data did say that the Changelings wanted to extract something from Picard's body. Not necessarily to use it to create a doppelganger. That was Geordi, Jean-Luc, and Beverly hypothesizing. It is likely something Borg-related. But it could be from some as-yet-unthought-of TNG episode. My guess is that this something is compatible with Jack due to Jack being Jean-Luc's son and that the Changelings want to put this something into Jack.
@nooneatall8072

The Talking Head could be an original Changeling from the Great Link. Vadic and those that she has linked with do have a different physiology from the original Changelings. In some respects they are "semi-solids". The original Changelings might not have a high opinion of them.

One thing about Vadic, yeah, it's the villain, (is it REALLY a she?) BUT (it) was tortured, (VERY un-Starfleet), AND it and it's friend's are being threatened by that head thing it keeps reporting to. So Vadic is a villain that one can relate to, maybe even be sympathetic to.

They'd better be lying about Kate Mulgrew not being in the show because they keep name dropping Janeway. If she doesn't appear by the end of the series, I'm going to be so disappointed. Also just have to say how great it is to see these characters again after so many years. After Voyager ended, I never expected to see Seven or Tuvok ever again. Paramount can really do something great here with building a Trek universe set in this time, with the outliers of SNW and the new Starfleet Academy set in the past and future.

This was a fun episode. A bit weaker overall, but still well done and very emotional given the limited cast and probable lower budget compared to the others. Hoping the Jack setup stuff pays off well and makes sense because his abilities are definitely getting more bizarre. Chilling to think the Irumodic Syndrome may have been incorrect and that he died due to something different. I also suggests Jack doesn't have it either. Although they didn't confirm and are only speculating that they needed Picard's body to make a "duplicate" because his participation in Frontier Day requires some kind of genetic confirmation, if that's the actual reason it's a bit of a letdown. But only because everything else about this season has been so remarkable. We did the duplicate Picard thing already and the "genetic confirmation" thing seems like a big contrivance. With the quality of writing this season I hope that's a red herring. But I guess even if it's not, that's a very minor quibble that I'd be okay with so long as the caliber of storytelling and respect for the characters and franchise continues to be as high as it has been. I am loving DataLore! Vadik was great this week and I enjoyed the interrogation scenes, as well as Geordi and DataLore. Incredible stuff, can't wait for next week.

Episode 7 is a trick that is used in music. A song keeps building, and building layering more instrumentation and counter melodies and bells and whistles. It gets to the point that if you add more or make certain things louder you lose the entire mix and can't distinguish anything. So, the trick is to go the other way and add a section of lower volume and less intricate instrumentation so once the ears get used to that then, BOOM you can go back into more decibels without distorting it all and losing the nuance.

I rewatched the last episode of Deep Space 9 and realized that the primary female changeling (founder) surrendered herself to the Federation at the end of the episode. I’m wondering if what happened is they sent her to one of these research facilities and Vadic is actually that Primary Female changeling (founder) who led the Dominion. It would explain a number of things: 1. Why Vadic is so angry 2. The 9 Changlings would have been those who had infiltrated Starfleet but captured after the war 3. Why she refers to “killing her family”
@CRanapia
@CRanapia Жыл бұрын
Assuming the Female Changeling was sentenced to imprisonment after a public trial, don't you think that would be a hellishly risky thing to do with the highest profile political prisoner in the Alpha Quadrant? No, I think it would make a lot more sense to assume that Vadic and her "family" came from elsewhere.

Sure - but nobody's the villain in their own story. From the Changeling's perspective, they're protecting themselves from the solids who persecuted and hunted them to the brink of extinction. The Dominion is not repression - it is the bringing of order to chaos.

I enjoyed season 3 very much. But I don't understand how the Borg was the big bad. I mean didnt the Borg join the Federation to monitor that huge worm hole and warned of a much bigger threat at the end of S2? So, what happen to that? Was the end of season 2 ignored, erased, recon? Or did something happen off screen with the Borg, we missed or I missed? Can you check into this in a future video. Thanks.

The Data Lor thing works for me. If they can integrate, it would almost be the best of two worlds. Data gets closer to humanity, and Lor gets a conscience. It also kinda puts right his stupid resurrection explanation in season one. One iota of Data was found. I don't believe it would be enough to do a full restore. In fact it could have led to a complication that made him distraught to the point he did not want to live. In my head, Data would never tire of living. Especially as he lived less time than a human would. I can see him giving his existence in the line of duty, but never just wanting to waste away. The obvious route would have been B4 (which is a stupid thing I could rant about but I won't). But I THINK the writer on that season really didn't want to please the old Trek fans.

I don't like it at all. It would be effectively erasing two distinct sentient beings. It would be like a reverse Tuvix. And just like that it would be wrong. We may as well combine Sisko and Gul Dukat. Or The Doctor and that crazy hologram that tried to kill B'Lanna.

The writers were not competent enough in the earlier seasons and they would probably tell you that the Trek that they were making was not for you.

@@jasonvoorhees8545 And that's their wrong attitude. They separate us and wonder why we're at odds at times. I don't want to hate Star Trek. I don't want to act entitled or gatekeep. I want a show all of us can get behind. The third season of Picard isn't my ideal Star Trek but it's what we got. If we stand behind it we will get more tolerable, perhaps even fun Trek.

@@seethransom I wouldn't mind that if it already sparked that, not only in the fandom but, in the show. But I haven't seen it mentioned at all. Everyone talks about like you did, like they will balance each other out or something. Like that is just something, that even if you can do, you should do with two people. If we want Data to be human, just give him his freaking emotion chip, don't let him turn it off, and be done with it. Data should either have found a way to be as human as possible for him or not by now. We shouldn't still be trying to "solve" that. I always wanted Data to stop wanting to be human and just want to be himself. It's bad enough Starfleet has Data/Lore locked up, forced to just be some security system, but now they are going to just start combining people together, so they can get the "best of both worlds", for their benefit. Damn, effed up quandary indeed. LOL.

The plan to create a copy of Picard doesn't seem to hold much water. Doesn't Star Fleet know at this point that the real Picard is with the Titan and likely considered an outlaw? If they somehow do not, unravelling the changelings entirely overcomplicated plan would simply be a matter of spreading that information. At that point it's not like fake Picard can just waltz in on First Contact Day and complete whatever nefarious mission is planned for him.

I too am still not buying that they have to 100% identify him in order for him to just hold a speech. Maybe this part will be explained. Having said that, the fact that they still need his authentication hints to Starfleet NOT completely being infiltrated at the highest levels yet. This could man that Janeway is still herself, and I so root for Mulgrew to show up this season.

This new android doesn't make any sense. Putting aside why Alton Soong would even create such a thing... why would such an unstable creation--containing a known evil personality--be put to work as the security system in one of Starfleet's most secure facilities? The crew then hard wire him into the Titan's systems and are surprised when Lore starts messing with the ship. Come on guys. Fool me once... Geordi also says that Data and Soong are the two primary, active partitions acting as the android's consciousness while Soong and B4 are simply stored as memory files. Yet in the previous episode, the android clearly says "I am B4". And... hologram projector eyes? Good one R2. That's almost as bad as the floatation device. I realize they had to come up with a plot device to get Data back into the story but this was pretty sloppy.
