Star Trek Starfleet Academy TV Show. Star Trek, Star Trek Picard, Star Trek Strange New Worlds... Paramount has cleared "Starfleet Academy" for launch, with principal photography scheduled to start next year.
"The series will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy,"
There's no word on the other spinoff show that was also being rumored, the Section 31-focused series, or "Star Trek: The Michelle Yeoh Show," as it was sometimes referred to. If we're being honest, however, it feels like that ship has sailed. But it was First Contact Day last week, so who knows what announcement Paramount might surprise us with.

I can't get into ANYTHING led by Kurtzman. He doesn't get what Star Trek is supposed to be all about. The Kurtzman problem is NOT about diversity. As mentioned in the video, Star Trek was always been diverse. Star Trek episodes were morality plays. I was young when Star Trek aired in 1966 and I have been a HUGE fan ever since. I learned so much from watching Star Trek. Star Trek back then shined a spotlight on what people in power were trying to hide. Vietnam, racial inequality, etc. The topics were current. NuTrek had not been able to do it in the same way. The writers' and producers' idea is to just include diverse characters in the cast. There's no attachment to the characters or their struggles (if their internal or external struggles are even brought to light). Star Trek has never been about just one character to the practical exclusion of everyone else as in the case of STD. So, I won't be watching anything in which Kurtzman is involved. How he got the reigns to Star Trek is a complete travesty.

@@GopherBaroque61 Not to mention that their idea of diversity is to have a highly partisan sitting politician represent the president of Earth, the season 1 villain being an evil xenophobic white guy that wants to "make the empire glorious again", and a whole scene that's only purpose was to show a discussion about preferred pronouns.

The audience score from Rotten Tomatoes for season 4 of Discovery has it at 20% and SNW season 1 is at 80%. Star Trek Picard season 3 is at 89% and the show isn't even finished yet. I know very few fans personally who are really supportive of the 34th century Discovery timeline beyond just as a way to wrap up that show from its complex first 2 season run. A Star Fleet Academy show is an iffy proposition in story telling concept, and setting it in that alternate future Discovery was in for later seasons, is going to be a gamble. The studio would be much better off continuing with the prime time line in the 25 century with a concept like Star Trek Legacy with the G class.

That's because they need to put it far enough into the future so that they can say it doesn't clash with the subjects we know cadets would need to have currently in the Trek universe (even though multiple shows have given us hints to what those are), plus you could potentially tap into the book universe as well. Which suspiciously sound like they want to dump the actual logical choices for subjects (because they would have no CLUE what to use as the actual curriculum) and go with potentially nonsense. Could also be that they don't want to the research and homework, which is more likely.

@@WoodysAR That was because Discovery and Picard seasons 1 and 2 weren't Trek. It took only a single person to get on board in Picard 3 to show the ENTIRE live-action effort what ACTUAL Trek is all about. S2 of Picard happened and was almost worse than s1- this was more failure: Fans stopped watching NuTrek... SNW debuted and lost viewers as it went. The show is "ok" but still misses the mark. Everyone wanted that show but no one I know stayed with it. Now s3 of PIC was a good send off for the the TNG characters... If Legacy happens, Trek fans will return. Picard Season 3 is seriously what we all want from Trek… great writing… excellent story, excellent acting… canon-references… What you said about diversity is so on-point; Diversity does not need to be explained… just be and do… no need to over explain… My favorite Discovery was Season 2, and then season 3 "Terra Firma" were excellent. "The Burn" explanation was pathetic… chasing after that and only to have it barely explained in 2 lines of dialog… not good. Season 4 was interesting… but still just more of the same. I won't watch anything that has Kurtzman/Secret Hideout in charge of it. By his own admission and demonstration, he does not understand or appreciate the franchise, and only begrudgingly ever considers the feedback from the fanbase (a fanbase that has supported the franchise since before he was born BTW). I firmly believe that Strange New Worlds was only as good as it was because Kurtzman took a backseat and let someone else drive. And, one look at Picard S3 demonstrates what Star Trek *could* be -- and even what it can recover from -- if it is placed in the hands of someone who knows, understands, and, above all, *respects* the material. Show Kurtzman the door, and let him take his dour, sour, faux-gritty, Abrams-esque NuTrek with him. Let him go back to making Transformers movies and other such classics as 'The Mummy' and 'Clarise'. Wipe his fingerprints off of Star Trek, and hand the reins over to Matalas, already!

The best thing to come out of Discovery was Captain Pike and Spock and Number One. Discovery itself has had very mixed reviews from good to bad to mediocre (depending on which side the fans stood) with plots that were a bit contrived at times in my opinion, full of political social commentary, and lots of dragged out plot in season long stories (with filler episodes that don't always advance the plot). Can we go back to setting all the Trek shows in the universe's "present"? Picard, Prodigy, and Lower Decks are all in roughly the same time period, and they are a logical chronological follow on to TNG, DS9, and Voyager, which timewise were a logical follow on to TOS. All of these shows were set in "the present" for the Trek universe at the time they originally aired. Prequels generally don't work, because we know too much about how they have to end. And doing stuff in the 32nd Century turns Picard, Prodigy, Lower Decks, and Legacy into prequels. (SNW works despite this because not only do we know how it ends, so does the Captain. And he has shared that knowledge with some of the crew. Se we can all settle back and focus on the episodic trip to get there. Plus it has good writing.) (Short arc prequels can also work to show us how we got somewhere. I'd love a movie or mini series about the Enterprise E.) Discovery was terrible, and I really don't want an Academy spin off set in the 32nd century. It will have a new showrunner, but will probably keep at least some of the Discovery writers. I also don't want the Section 31 spin off set in SNW's time. (And cannon requires Georgiou to be in SNWs time or die.)

Star Trek Picard Season 3 is the best Star Trek I've seen since Voyager. I'd definitely watch Star Trek Legacy but won't watch Starfleet Academy. Vapid preachy shows for teens aren’t new; when I was 12, 16, 18 there were tons of them. I didn’t watch them then, I won't watch now. When I was 12 I watched reruns of shows like Star Trek where everyone was much older and different than me. They had great stories and characters and that's all that mattered. I watched all of S1 and S2 of Discovery but couldn't get through S3 because the real problem with Discovery is that it hates you. As a teen I'd happily watch good adult dramas and today I'll gladly watch good teen dramas. It's why I watched and enjoyed Wednesday and The Magicians. Discovery deliberately sets out to be the opposite of all Star Trek from TOS to Voyager, (and Wednesday and The Magicians as well), which are shows anyone can watch. Discovery has terrible stories yet the real problem is that it's like a high school hazing by the cool kids. The fact that the cool kids are now "cool misfits" instead of "cool jocks" doesn't change how mean-spirited it is. Why would anyone think Starfleet Academy will be different? (Contrast this with Wednesday, which is also about teen misfits going to school but is great fun). It speaks volumes that Discovery isn't truly interested in "Diversity". The Discovery showrunners and writers, overwhelmingly in their 50’s and 60’s, created proxies in their 20’s or 30’s who show contempt for people who aren't in their in-group and who never stop telling everyone how different and superior they are. All those voices in Discovery aren't actually young; they're the voices of a bunch of mean-spirited old men.

I'd rather be done with the discovery timeline and watch a starfleet academy show set in the 25th century. There would be so many more interesting things to see that could cater to the young people and those who enjoyed/familiar with the Berman era Trek.

10:58 Gene may not have advertised his diverse cast, but he did think, “I’m going to make the cast diverse.” Otherwise, he wouldn’t have. He’d make everyone white and male just like all the other shows.
@ThePopcast

Michael, no he obviously did, but what we are saying is that he didn't do it for the sake of being diverse. He did it because that's what he believed that was the future . So he treated it like it was normal. That's what Star Trek needs to do today. Have diverse characters, but then forget they are different. If that makes sense.

@@ThePopcast I feel comfortable saying Gene likely did add diversity to the show for the sake of being diverse. Something that was severely lacking then. There was little meaningful diversity on TV in 60’s. The only difference I see between Gene’s efforts to promote diversity and what Trek is doing today? Not making a big deal out of it. Back then, a diverse crew might’ve even turned viewers off. I’ve never understood why people have issues with advertised diversity. I’m thrilled Trek has never been more progressive. It warms my heart being diverse in casting is considered a selling point of pride. Think about the sociological implications. If creators are boasting about diversity, that means more and more of the public are not only accepting, but want it. Good! That’s excellent. A far cry from Gene’s day, and I couldn’t be happier about it. I mean, some networks refused to even air Kirk and Uhura being forced to kiss! What a wonderful turnaround. However, all the diversity in the universe can’t save a show if it’s not written the best. Diversity being the best thing about the show? That is no bueno. While I do like DSC and PIC, they hadn’t been what I’d been looking for from Trek. Many of the critical complaints are valid. The pacing, the characterizations, the stories themselves, needed a shot in the arm like what Terry brought. This past year has been the absolute best Trek’s ever had. 50 weeks of Trek. My god, I never dreamed I’d be eating this well. All really good too. Well, after PIC season 2. That was merely okay. Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds though? Chef’s kiss. New Trek has officially grown the proverbial Riker beard. We’ll see if Academy shaves it off. I hope not.

What does Star Trek Starfleet Academy need to be good? 1) The curriculum and syllabi per specialization field (Command, Engineering, Medical, Science, Communications/Languages, Security, etc.- in essence, all the colored shirts) is important. This means there needs to be some consistency in what was mentioned before in other Trek shows about Starfleet Academy and the subjects and topics and skills that ALL cadets would need to know across the board (stuff like piloting, zero-G walks, survival skills when they have no access to technological tools, the ability to use their sidearms like phasers and/or heavier firepower so that they at least know the basics about its usage and applications (like heating rocks for warmth, for example), self defense (able to fight off any attackers or intruders), to name but a few. Then, if you want to set up different characters in different fields (as mentioned above), there needs to be at least some indication of progress in more advanced subjects they are introduced to over the course of the show (one can watch the episode where Geordi and Leah Brahms - both the hologram and real person version talks shop regarding engineering topics, for example). There would also need to have subjects like Galactic History (or at least Alpha Quadrant history), Diplomacy/Etiquette, First Contact Protocol and Cultural Appreciation (things you would normally see in greetings in other languages, do's and don'ts in certain cultures (Federation and peoples the Federation have encountered and interacted with on their missions), how to show respect to other Federation cultures, etc. - in other words, everything you always see and hear the Starship Captains always say when they deal with new species and races during First Contact). There can also be sub-specialization fields, like Archaeology (in the Science field), Teaching, Geology (in the Science field), History of specific Federation peoples, Psychology (in the Medical Field), etc. In other words, check out the episode synopsis/summary for any Trek episode, and use any specialist they call upon as a template for a subject or topic at the Academy. Also, instructors would be specialists in their field, like Admirals or Captains (we know this, because Starfleet captains/admirals in the past instructed students on specific things relevant to their unique experiences in the field). 2) You would need to have a mixture of academics and sci-fi. That means you need to have the introduction of things we are all familiar with in high school/college/university - the studying of textbooks to pick up knowledge, the presentation of research papers at symposiums to share and disseminate research for the benefit of everyone present, timetables, socialization of the students at peer hubs like pubs or clubs, study groups, etc. There's a LOT one can add to this, and any college or university based comedy can serve as blueprint for any of that (just add a Trek flavor/sci-fi twist to it). 3) Research for all of this need to be done - this means that who ever is going to work on it MUST at least be familiar with Trek in general, and have done research on the Academy itself (the very minimum required is AT least having read the wiki). That means knowing how the structure of the Academy works, what activities they are involved in, and what students are taught and how they are prepared for their "practicals" upon actual Starfleet ships, and what the instructor and student culture is like. They need to know HOW students are admitted into the Academy and why those students in particular are chosen. This means looking at the Starfleet Academy game, any book series written about it and any episodes featuring any cadets across any of the Trek series. There's not a lot of them, so checking out the live-action ones shouldn't take that long. There are a couple of mentions of Academy days by characters outside of cadet episodes (Red Squad episodes, for example), but it should be easy to track those because Trek fans RECORD and DISSEMINATE every piece of information ever shared in-universe - in that regard, they are only matched by Star Wars fans in taking note of any and all details of a fictional universe. You can also show students being "placed" at different locations like specific starship task forces like Neutral Zone patrol or mercy missions, locations like planetary bases or starbases (or research bases), depending on what they were being taught at the Academy. You could also show some of the students being placed at places like Starfleet Command, Starfleet Medical, Starfleet Security, Starfleet Intelligence, Federation Council, Federation News Service, etc.) The possibilities for it is limitless, for anyone familiar enough with source material. Heck, you can even have crossover time travel episodes - where Discovery jumps over to Academies and different places from previous decades (as learning experiences) even a potential Mirror Universe Academy, since they have the almost impossible task of having to restart the Academy in the future, without actually having the administrative knowhow of how to actually do that, but will need to get by the Temporal Prime Directive, somehow. Remember, Discovery's crew was TAUGHT by the Academy, they are not Academy trainers themselves. They can only reconstruct what they know based on what they were taught. That means for them restarting the Academy is very much a trial and error affair - some things they might do well and benefit from that, and they will have to learn from their failures in others, in very much how EVERY leader learns. You can EVEN work in a Section 31 storyline in there. Showing how radical students are recruited by Section 31, or how Section 31 has one or more agents working within the Academy to spot students with "recruitment potential" - there even exists a parallel in real-life for something like that; or looking to spy on any new ideas that students create for acquisition by Section 31 for use in their operations. Not saying what I've listed above is the only things that needs to be done, but if they have THAT as their foundation, they will ALREADY have done 50-75% of things right. They can then add some of their own creativity on top of that in the stories they want to tell. They already have the blueprint, all they need to do is use it.
@sigmacademy
@sigmacademy Жыл бұрын
And by textbooks, I mean PADDS. Also, students would need to be graded based on their test scores, assignments and practical projects they need to complete as part of their training (which will include various scenarios in holodeck training). Also, Starfleet Corps of Engineers being introduced would be nice as well, not to mention the merchant fleet of the Federation.

If writers want to get this right., They need to talk to fans of the series, some of the authors who have published successful military science fiction in terms of character development, as well as graduates of current military academy's that are actual science fiction fans who can actually tell them how academy actually work so that they can have a factual basis to start with and work out from there and don't forget the history/ traditions of the academy itself., Something that they sometimes skip over depending on the needs of the episode, in terms of plot, when it could be a focal point

Star fleet isn’t military. It operates like a military branch but it is primarily a exploration and science organization in a socialist society. You can say it’s almost fascist like the brown fascism of a modern corporation that operates with the fundamentals of the law of the sea or commercial law otherwise known as law merchant in ancient parlance. That’s why Picard was able to converse with ferengi pirates so eloquently. If you think about it, it’s like being on one of those sea faring scientology vessels.

11:05-11:30: Thank goodness SOMEONE said this. (OPINION ONLY - Not stating as "fact".) No need to "divide" people/audiences. It's SIMPLE: If people wait 25 years for STEAK, and you give them PORKCHOPS, they're not "Pork-Phobic", or intolerant. They're saying that what they've waited for WASN'T DELIVERED. If YOU want to make a "NEW TAKE", or "FRESH LOOK", at anything, THEN DO THAT. Don't co-opt someone else's vision and audience, and then wonder why they don't accept it. DO THE WORK. CREATE. Make a NEW LEGACY that's YOURS with your own world/universe building. There's ROOM FOR EVERYONE, but it doesn't mean that you need to STEAL someone else's fan-base and legacy to do it. Make your own. If you have something of quality, then it will stand on its own. Anyone who says that it CAN'T be done, 2 words: SETH MACFARLANE. Space ships, "human condition" commentary, Interpersonal & personal growth and development, just like Star Trek, but he did it IN HIS UNIVERSE, not Roddenberry's.

Here is a good idea for star trek, if they want to get a hold of me by all means. A rag tag team of Starfleet year 3 and 4 cadets get in trouble and are facing expulsion in the midst of a huge invasion of Starfleet on earth by some unknown alien force and they steal a state of the art spaceship to battle the new threat, not known to them they steal an extremely experimental classified time ship that is 3 classes above the Defiant, has blade of armour shielding and a cloaking device that is illegal in the federation. in the battle they accidently get thrown through time with the time machine's engines malfunctioning as it's not completed and they land in the past, effect Starfleets future and have to jump back and forth through time to fix what they destroyed. now obviously Wesley Crusher and his team of travelers gets involved at some point to steer their time traveling adventures in the right direction. It could be called Star Trek Time Shift or Star Trek Legacy

When you watch Discovery in the 32nd century and you see the ships from that Era, you get a lowsy blue non-scientific control panel along with unexplained perpultion and overall technology.. Star Trek is a progession of thoughts and ideas from the passage of time as we grow. We had a jump to the 32nd century and without the natural Star Trek progression. The 25th century is a progession of time after thoughts and ideas from the centuries before. I dare to ask what the 32nd century would have been like if the show was able to progress naturally instead of jumping? I want the 25th century, and I want it now.

Another KZbin channel host made the point that he wasn’t going to watch Starfleet Academy because Kurtzman is a show runner. I couldn’t agree more. Alex Kurtzman is the absolute worst thing that has ever happened to Trek (yes, I know about missteps like Star Trek V, but that wasn’t continuous, like Kurtzman’s travesties). WHY do they keep him, when his track record is so abysmal???!!! Case in point: STD, which was so bad they had to move it to the 32nd century. They couldn’t even keep it in the Trek prime universe!!! Besides-haven’t they learned from the third season of Picard, which has been the best, most real Star Trek in over 20 years, for ONE reason: KURTZMAN HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!! (he may be listed as executive producer, but he’s NOT the show runner) Because Kurtzman has his grimy fingers in this project, I don’t have a lot of hope for this show, certainly from a quality aspect. It will probably be dark and gloomy, like all the other Kurtzman series are. He refuses to learn that good Star Trek is positive. So I keep hoping to continue to see Star Trek boldly going where no Kurtzman has gone before!!!

Getting rid of Discovery was a no brainer after seeing what has happened with both Strange New Worlds operating out of the Berman'verse (minus Berman thank God!) and how ST: Picard has been received by both old and new fans. Hopefully ST: Starfleet Academy will not suffer the wokeness overload of ST: D that ultimately killed it off (now that Berman is no longer an influence in Star Trek lore)....If ST: SFC is written ultimately as a correction of the 32nt century timeline, I'll watch. If it's a rehash of ST: D then NO, I'll not watch at all and Lt. Tilley can wander off into obscurity.

The only reason I've watched everything now is because of Lower Decks. Watched Discovery only because I already had a subscription. Prodigy has been great. SNW is the most average Trek ever, but with good writing. (Average is good.) Season 1 of Picard is unwatchable, season 2 is decent if you're under the influence, and season 3 is awesome. There's got to be a balance between trying something new and giving fans what they want. I'm not interested in Starfleet Academy or Section 31. But, I'll give them a chance and form my own opinion.

I am very doubtful a Disco spin off academy show is going to work well. If they really can knuckle down and work on the stories and characters, while moving their tone into better harmony with the Star Trek spirit then, just maybe. But, there are so many things I feel like writers and producers either don't get or reject about Star Trek. The social dynamics, the economy, etc. And it is understandable, as they are mostly kryptonite to drama. But, that is the challenge of playing in the ST sandbox. You want the toys, but don't want to play by the rules, don't be surprised when the fandom turns. Not to say Star Trek is perfect, but if you want to change the rules, you have to be compelling. I think Secret Hideout overestimated the effect of their special FX, and assumed they could write to the average viewer. That just isn't going to fly. Didn't work for Bad Robot with the Kelvin Trek (though it kinda did for a minute), and it didn't work with Star Wars (though, again, it kinda of did for a minute).
