This is the actual first studio recording of the Main Title theme for Star Trek: The Motion Picture on October 23, 1979. Goldsmith can be heard giving corrections after the orchestra initially misinterpret his instructions on timing. Music composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith, may he RIP.

Alfred Valrie barely. Robert Wise always considered the Theatrical Version as a rough cut of the film that he was aiming for. 20 years later, he approached Paramount asking to create a definitive Director’s Cut, which would include a new sound mix and several newly enhanced VFX shots. Two years after he made his request, “Star Trek TMP: The Director’s Edition” was released to mostly positive reviews and proved to be a smart investment for Paramount.

Obviously one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. This amazing track demonstrates how small changes in beat or instrumentation can greatly affect the “feel” of a song. For example the lack of tympani during the bridge or the louder trumpets during the second bridge. I prefer the theatrical version but this one is great as well. Far better version than the TNG’s very docile one.
