This episode is a great example of how Worf can carry complex episodes and deep themes. It's one of reasons he was so amazing when he moved over to DS9 and got the attention he deserved to develop, almost Data level of importance to the show.

@@richardb6260 Kat would love it. Although there are some trigger warnings she may not like and if that's the reason fair enough It's Paula who'll make the call as she's the Trek guide but steamrolling into Voyager would be a shame as its the weaker show. DS9 has its issues but as far as character development (the stuff their always praising) it's the best trek show. Season 1 is a slog but then every non -TOS show season 1 is. And I think season 1 and 2 of DS9 is better than the other spin off shows even so. It "grows the Beard" more fully. By season 4 it hits some of trek high peaks

Yah, this episode has a lot of the energy that I love from DS9. In this one, watching Worf navigate all of the various situations and relationships feels like a prepper for Worf and his unique relationships with all the other characters on the station. It's just sooo damn good. Every character on that show grows and develops so fantastically, but Worf is up there with Nog for me as some of the best.

THIS is one of the FEW examples of the "multiverse" done RIGHT! (as opposed to 99% of multiverse media today) "Then he constantly rolls 'Nat 1s'." - Kat FLOORED me with that out of left field D&D joke.
@One.Zero.One101

The reason why this multiverse is good is because the concept is central to the plot and the characters. In films like Dr. Strange you can tell the multiverse is just a marketing gimmick. All they did was switch the green and red in the traffic lights. That movie probably had 100x the budget of this episode and that's all they could think of?

@@TheNoiseySpectator LOL It's a fascinating argument to make -- that Worf dreamt the whole experience and that is why there is no surprise party for him at the end. (For me, that's just a reasonably-well-done plot hole that, though it hurts the verisimilitude of the episode, it's still Okay since it's a nice ending.) But for the 'It's-all-a-dream' argument, I would counter-argue that if it was Worf's dream there would have been countless more pain-sticks and considerably fewer 'tender' moments.

Interesting to see you ladies' reactions to this great episode. Looking back at TNG season 7, it's very up and down but the up moments were very high up and Parallels is no exception. Looking back, I'd love to see more of that universe where Riker is captain of the Enterprise with Worf as first officer. In fact, the sky's the limit with all the possibilities in the multiverse. For all we know, in one universe, Tasha is still alive, Picard and Crusher are together, and Data is an admiral.

It’s a good thing they closed that temporal rift when they did, because in the vastness of the multiverse there had to be a couple timelines where Worf was assimilated by the Borg. Imagine if a few Borg Cubes showed up, linked up their collectives, and went all Infinity Ultron on the multiverse. Sends a shiver down my spine thinking about it. Also I’m convinced there were a few cloaked Klingon Birds of Prey in that collection of Enterprises, the versions of Worf who grew up in the Klingon Empire.

So yes I enjoyed how they did it & the subtleties of bringing it thru to the audience how they did. But Ultimately, I'm IMZADI all the way at the end of the day... Probably in large part to the Peter David Novel of the same name where the Riker/Troi history can have the time for a deep-dive :) Great Reaction Gals :) - I too really enjoy this s7 episode, as far as 'Sci-fi' subject material goes, its kinda up there for me with 'Timescape' ☺

Michael Dorn is a really good comedic actor. It's really subtle, but you will notice how good he is at timing and restrained physical comedy. Some actors might be tempted to make it big and overreact, but he keeps it within his character. EDIT: Regarding the Worf and Troi question, I think Worf and Troi had the better chemistry during the show and in my head canon I want them to end up together. But having said that, I think Troi and Riker had very good chemistry in the movie First Contact.

Of all the science-fiction stories I have ever published, the one that the most people have written to me about personally, the one where they say they were personally moved, was "The Orpheus Fountain", a story in which an accident causes a husband to lose all memories of his years with his wife. I think we realize on a deep level how dependent we are on shared memories, especially those of people we love, and the loss of those memories (which actually happens in cases of dementia) is devastating. Because I've seen the futures (including the romantic futures) of all these characters, I can't speak of this particular pairing-moment objectively, but its presentation was very sweet, and I loved it. IF Kat were going to see DS9 and all the movies *and* ST:Picard, then we could have a conversation about it. :)
@kschneyer
@kschneyer Жыл бұрын
@@TheNoiseySpectator When I was researching my story, I spoke with a research psychologist who is an expert in human memory, and he assured me that the kind of memory loss I was imagining was not possible by any ordinary means, i.e., "Memory just doesn't work that way." So I invented a handwaving-nanotech thingy that was designed to do one thing and accidentally wound up doing another. The case you describe sounds different, however. It sounds like the actual personality was fixed at a certain age and couldn't change.

The only problem with relationships in older shows is that due to the nature of writing back then there was often a refusal to commit to them. I believe Jonathan Frakes in an interview recently said something to the effect of despite the producers/showrunners not liking it he and Marina Sirtis always played Riker and Troi as being "in love/soulmates" or whatever, always an undertone in their interactions.

This was always a fun episode to watch. I like troi with both riker and worf. Back in the 90's when it originally aired I remember being really against it and wanting the troi riker relationship back as bad as the Picard Beverly relationship. But now after rewatching it, it does work really well. And it's cute how Deanna is open to it and not stand offish because of riker or any other reason not written. But since everyone is talking multiverse (which my mildly autistic mind can't keep up with lol.), What if Tasha hadn't been killed and hit it off with Worf? I mean he was kind of flirting with her about being the favorite competitor in the mixed martial arts competition in the opening scene of skin of evil. I always wondered if they would have made a good couple... 😉.

The last four episodes were all episodes that I guessed (correctly) that you would like more than I do. This one starts a string of episodes (up until but not including the terrible one that has been hinted at) that you cannot like more than I do, because I like them so much. Yes, there was some frustration in seeing Worf effectively gaslit in the early part of this episode, but you still have to admire how his crewmates in each parallel universe are going out of their way to try to help him, double-checking their records giving Worf every benefit of the doubt, even though from their perspective it could seem like Worf is trying to gaslight them as much as it would seem to him that they are gaslighting him. Every stays civil and respectful and works through it. I hadn't thought of bringing Tasha Yar back for this episode. Story-wise it would make sense, but I don't think that from a fan perspective we would want to see Denise Crosby brought back for such a short time. If she appeared here as briefly as Wesley did, having to say goodbye to her again at the end would cause more pain than her return would in joy. Saying goodbye to Wesley isn't as traumatic because he is still alive and out there and could easily return again, even without a time travel or alternate universe storyline.

***POTENTIAL MINOR DS9 SPOILER*** I think I have an issue with a close friendship between a man and a woman needing to become romantic in fiction. TNG and DS9 actually introduce various interesting ideas regarding relationships and single parenthood which seem somewhat ahead of their time, like having Troi and Riker (in TNG) being two people who did have a romantic beginning but have settled into a strong friendship, or showing how Sisko can be a nurturing father without the need of a mother figure (even when Cassidy is introduced they never imply that she's a mother figure to Jake). Worf and Troi isn't the worst example of when writers have shipped a man and woman who've been close, and it feels a lot more natural than usual, but something about it still feels a little contrived to me.

If you like alternate universe and time travel stories so much, then one series you should consider watching at some point (if you haven't both seen it already) is the Netflix show "Travelers". It has 34 total episodes over three seasons, and it is all about time-travel throughout, yet this show found a new and interesting take on the subject. The show ended only about 5 years ago, and even with all of the other time-travel shows and movies that have been made over the decades before them, "Travelers" successfully avoids all of the overused too-familiar time-travel tropes. Nowhere do they just throw out a bunch of technobabble to say "This is how it's going to work this episode, just accept it". There are some far-out concepts to how time-travel works, but they only have to explain them once, because it is a small set of rules which is consistent throughout the show. As far as I know, GreyWolf TV (www.youtube.com/@GreyWolfTV/videos) is the only KZbin channel which has reacted to this series, and that channel really liked it. I think that you would as well.

I love the choice of making Worf the focus of this episode. Because on paper he's the worst character for this to happen to. Someone like Data or Geordi or even Picard would immediately start workshopping the science and solutions. It would have been cool if there were some Klingon ships thrown in with the Enterprises. Logicily there would have been some alternate realities were Worf's father was never killed at Kitimer and Worf in command of a Klingon warship.

I thought Worf-Troi was an interesting idea but wasn't that into it and it didn't make that much sense to me. Although I can see a feeling of deep affection on Worf's part. (Turns out Marina Sirtis apparently thought it was pretty ridiculous too, and mentioned so just within a few recent years, so it wasn't *just* Frakes.. 😆 Iir, she said they acted the part, as called for by the writing, of course, but she herself saw the pairing as the writers attempting to make relationship tension for its own sake..) Personally, I do think the main characters don't explore romantic relationships as much or as freely as one might expect they ought to based on their general acceptability as hinted at and implied by the social norms they claim to have. (Which is odd when you consider Risa, the pleasure planet. But a lotta that was probably also social norms of the late '80s and early '90s.) I really liked the concept of the episode though, and the execution.

As Worf ended up before hitting the anomaly the incident never happened so all the Worfs are where they should be... with Deanna Troi and The Borg Queen.

I have always loved this episode, although I never got this emotional over the fates of the parallel versions of other characters. I always thought it would have been better if the destruction of the Borg-survivor Enterprise wasn't because of their warp containment field being week, but because a hundred Rikers gave the same order at the same moment for their Enterprises to fire on it with "minimal power."

I absolutely love this episode. As for the relationship? I honestly see both points. They set it up to this point but let's sing the same song, the showrunners were allergic to character arcs unless they were subtle. It DOES make a lot more sense than Jonathan Frakes says it does, though it's so funny because I'm imagining you're saying he's jealous on behalf of his character, which is an amusing thought. Anyway, he's married to half of the most fundamentally f'd up power couple in all of soap operas, Genie "Laura" Francis from General Hospital. So... just saying... maybe he has reason for his perspective to be skewed? I LOVED Wesley's appearance though and LOVED how much Kat lit up for him, by the way. Like I have always said, I hate the way Season 1 Wesley was written, and I think so does Wil, but every so often I will love the character and hate the writers. You know what's funny, I have the very same attitude towards characters in pro wrestling. Like, I love Liv Morgan, and I don't mean I love Gionna Daddio, the performer, I love Liv Morgan the character, that was largely created by writers and bookers at WWE, though probably because the real Gionna Daddio is responsible for her attitude. But I personally hate how her character is _written_ lately, because it's a case of people loving her but the writers having no idea how to portray her as a winner. Just like first season Wesley was "How do I write a teenager?" and it felt like very few writers got that right. One of the reasons why I hope you guys watch DS9 (on your own time) is to see Jake Sisko, because I think they did a little better writing him than Wesley.

Wow, this episode is a mixed bag for me. I think about it a lot and really enjoy the premise as well as Worf, but what it introduces to the show (and you know what) felt like a waste of time and potential. I definitely don't hate this one, but that one little twist is tough for me to get through. (You know what, I feel like I wasn't clear enough! I love this episode for its own plot, but Worf and Troi as it is is something I'm still pretty unsure about. So like.. a 7/10 for me.)

I was "shipping" Worf and Troi since before "shipping" was a thing! And yet, I haven't seen this episode in Years and forgot it!! I instead think of "All Good Things". I always loved their chemistry, and I like them as characters moving on from Troi and Riker. The Enterprise where Picard died during the Borg War is one where I wished they spent more time with! Great episode!!

GAH ok, it took a surprising amount of willpower for me to watch the whole thing before commenting. I was immediately going to say that this one grew into one of my favorite episodes, specifically when Worf says to Riker "I do remember, I just remember different" it always gives me goosebumps. I once tried to write (err a chapter of) a book about a guy with a similar ability to Worf here, then it turns out that it's not that special at all; on some level we are all affected by what we might have experienced. The fact that we are only explicitly aware of one reality does not preclude the existence of others that can influence our experiences (I.E. help us figure out how we feel about someone). I was also thinking how this provides an explanation for Jung's Synchronicity (events linked by meaning but not cause... and also my favorite 2 Police songs), when Kat said "synchronicity" out loud and freaked me out! I am freaked out. Anyway 😅... this was really fun to watch, thanks! Love it.

Hi guys I just want to say I love your reactions 💞. Intriguingly enough, I would like to see Deanna Troi with Thomas Riker the duplicate of Will Riker. Why, you may ask? He never left Deanna Troi because of career ambition. May I ask your thoughts on my idea of Thomas Riker and Deanna Troi as a couple? Thank you so very much 💕. With respect always Brant Heavner 😁❤️💯🙏👍

I legit never remember Wesley is in this episode LOL. To answer the Worf/Troi question - it's ok. I appreciate your perspective on it, and it wasn't out of nowhere. But. There is a history of forced romance in series and this does, to me, still feel a little bit forced.

I totally get Worf and Troi being close friends, but I've always thought Troi would want someone more in touch with their feelings and able to articulate them than Worf for a relationship. But I fully acknowledge that the character of Troi is a very different person than I am, so my judgment may be off...
