You know it's a slow episode when your favorite part of the episode is an android telling a Klingon to tell a cat that it's "a good cat". Lol! For whatever reason, that is the most memorable scene in this episode. But then again, who doesn't like Barkley, I mean broccoli. This was a weird episode, but the use of imagery and the somewhat funny scenes were a little more entertaining to me. They could have added a couple more funny scenes. On the whole, as another filler episode (man there are a lot of those in this season) I gave it a D+. I feel your guy's pain with this season. This is where I started to tune out a bit with the series. Add on to one of your comments: Troi used the "etch a sketch" tool feature from the Holodeck software to design the cake. That's why it looks like a 5-year-old drew it. 24th Century software is so 1990's. Good review, I can't blame you for getting a little frustrated/tired of this season.

If every TV series has a life cycle then one bit of evidence is the "plug-n-play" with script ideas. As the years go by, the need for good story ideas is replaced by the need for any storyline that keeps production on schedule. Everyone involved with TNG, including fans, lower their standards because we all know, and like, each other. "Phantasms" got the easy pass because sometimes a TV show is just a TV show.

In reality, the holodeck would make just about everything except engineering, transporters, and power generation obsolete. Quarters for the crew could be entirely simulated. In fact, why would you send down any person to a planet? Send a robot that looks like whatever that lifeform is, which does immediate translation tied into the computer. What is the point of an away mission? The holodeck pretty much breaks everything. Why would you directly experience ANYTHING?
