I reckon you just cut Qui-Gon completly from the movie like why is he there? Obi-Wan said he found Anakin and brought it upon himself to train him as a Jedi, he is Obi-Wan’s master but wasn’t that Yoda though? Yoda taught him the ways of the force not Qui-Gon, you could have Qui-Gon as his saber instructor though that would make a lot more sense.

@@knightwarrioranimations9656 I don't know what to say. You're right when you said that Obi-Wan said in the original trilogy that he found and trained him, but I wouldn't want to cut Qui-Gon from the movies. I liked him as a character, and maybe there could be a way in which Obi-Wan is the one who finds and trains Anakin, as if instead of being a padawan he'a already a Jedi Knight but he still hangs around want Qui-Gon the same way that Anakin and Obi-Wan do in the Clone Wars despite no longer being teacher and student. There's also the subject of Yoda being Obi-Wan's master in the OT, but your idea of Qui-Gon being his lightsaber teacher could work. After all, Padawans in KOTOR did have multiple Masters.

The best part about the prequels was the setup for Jar Jar to become a Drunk Kung-Fu-inspired Sith sleeper agent/hidden chessmaster as a kind of dark counterpart to Yoda, who also appeared as a strange little alien before revealing himself to be a Jedi Master. Jason Brown That line, when taken in the context it was given in by Lucas, was in reference to the effects shots that he wanted done for the prequels. If Jar Jar, as a mo-cap character, could be believed to be there, the rest of the effect shots could be done. You should watch the visual effects featurette for episode 1. That is where you will find the context of that quote.

riley van horn guy Yeah, but he's massively annoying. He didn't have to take up every other frame of the film. If they wanted to make a kid's movie they should have just made a kid's movie. They didn't need to make an otherwise serious movie and take a minor comic relief character and give him way too much screentime.
@rileyvanhornguy
@rileyvanhornguy 9 жыл бұрын
Jason Brown Jar Jar was in the film so much because he was repaying a life debt like Morgan Freeman in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. R2 and 3PO were also the comedians of the original trilogy. 3PO spent more time bitching about stuff and arguing with R2 in the originals than Jar Jar and we see them continue to fight in the prequels.

***** I think it's an excellent use of sexual tension as a device to drive the narrative, without being wildly maudlin or indulgent. It creates the rivalry between Anakin and Obi Wan that's alluded to in Episode IV and is yet so miserably handled in Eps II and III. "YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BE THE CHOSEN ONE ..." Oh my God, how awful. Calling it a "love triangle" weighs it down with too much baggage. There's no romance between Anakin and Padme in this installment, according to the "what if .."

This dude is completely wrong. The prequels are Anakin's story - this whole Obi Wan focus is absolutely horrible. In fact all of Star Wars was, in reality, about Anakin and subsequently Vader. I would've removed Qui Gon entirely (not because I dislike him, he's just an empty vessel that was essentially the wise Obi Wan we get from ep2 on) and had Obi Wan take on Anakin as his apprentice from day 1. Make Anakin a young teen, same as Padme, and they blossom from there.

Another thing I would've changed is the way Darth Sidious is presented. In the movies, it was pretty obvious that the guy was Palpatine. Painfully so, really. It should've been that the Trade Federation guys mention a "mysterious benefactor" from time to time, or if they absolutely have to show him, have him communicate via really blurry hologram with a heavy distortion filter for his voice. Not only does it make the reveal actually surprise us, but it also properly builds up this guy's presence and makes us wonder who he really is and why he has to be so secretive about his appearance.

A Jedi Knight, with a gentle nobility, and ease of manner who maybe does things in an unconventional way. I did, there was nothing memorable about it (which explains why I've forgotten most of it despite watching it 3 times). Even if this scene magically explains everything, how does one scene make up for a complete lack of interest in their villains? 1 - Maul - Says 2 lines all movie before getting chopped in half. He appears in about 3 minutes worth of footage before the final battle. Who cares? 2. Dooku - Appears literally out of thin air in episode 2 after never even being mentioned in episode 1. Where is his backstory? Why is he doing this separatist crap in the first place? Why should I care about someone I've never even heard of? I'm not going to watch hundreds of episodes of CGI cartoons just so I can enjoy one movie. Next. 3. Metal Bot of Death (forgot his name). Appears out of nowhere with a spooky voice and several lightsabers. Another bad guy appearing out of thin air so Obi Wan gets to look cool in a final fight scene. Why should I give 2 shits about this big metal thing? Who is he, and where did he come from? What does he want? Again, "mwa ha ha, I am evil, I hate jedi." 4. Palpatine. He wants power. He wants revenge. I still don't know why he wants revenge. For what? What did the jedi do to him? Where is this explained? Where is he from? Did he have parents? A home? A story? Not to my knowledge. But what do I know, I'm just a guy who watched every SW film (including prequels) at least twice each... and I still don't know. I guess I have to scour the internet, fan fic and extended universe for 3 months. No thanks. All this stuff might make sense to hardcore Star Wars fans. But not to me. I am a SW fan, I think Jedis are cool and space battles are fun to watch. I enjoy movies in general: ones that make sense, anyways. Where the characters have motives, and you care what happens to them. On their own, the prequels are utter trash, and the characters are (BY FAR AND AWAY) the worst part of them. Adding salt to the wound is that we already know how it ends; but the characters and writing were so bad that we don't care. At least Revenge of the Sith had lots of fun action scenes, which is the only redeeming virtue of the entire series.

I liked Mike Stoklasa's idea of Anakin starting out being over 16. The idea of a ten year old being too old to train seemed ridiculous after seeing the original trilogy, I think it was just an excuse to get a bunch of children in the film because they stupidly thought that would make children like it more.

I can see where you're coming from, but if you've seen TCW you'll know that jedis are taken from their parents as toddlers and trained from the earliest childhood. That's why Anakin is too old and Luke was WAY too old. That's just the canon explanation though.

It mades a bit of sense. Jedis are like shaolin monks with super powers. Is not just gymnastics, is philosophy and "brain washing". Luke fails the yoda training because he was to old. He had prejudgments about the world around him. A younger child does not.

Nachoman Randy I would call them samurais with superpowers. Shaolin monks were about defending thenselves and their temple. They did not serve a greater cause as warriors. Samurais on the other hand served their lord and the Emperor as warriors and they protected the peasents against bandits, so in that aspect the Jedi is closer to the Samurai. Lightsaber = Katana ;)

Stupid long comment ahead! Grab a Red Bull if you intend to read this. How I would fix the prequels: 1. *Don't* *kill* *off* *Darth* *Maul*. Because he died too soon, a longer life-span with him chasing Obi would have shown off his vengeful side, and because it would be kind of neat if he was in the entire trilogy. I would've killed off the cowardly Grievous on Naboo, so Obi could have *destroyed* Maul on Utapau. It would have done the prequels a favour. 2. *No* *useless* *CGI*. While the necessary and good-looking use of CGI in the prequels came out alright, things like Dexter and his café could have been crafted rather than animated. We all love the masking, puppeteering and scenery building in the originals... And I think the actors would've had more fun with less greenscreen and more materialised scenery to play with. 3. *KEEP* *GEORGE* *OUT* *OF* *THE* *DIRECTING*. The script and the acting suffered greatly from George's directing. "From my point of view, the Jedi are evil!"? Really? And I just want to see the cast in full action. The prequels were a waste of talent (and Samuel should have been a bad motherf*cker). 4. *Ani* *shouldn't* *be* *a* *little* *bitch*. It would've been so much cooler if he had gone from noble but short-tempered wee hero, to being corrupted into an angry (more badass) Vader. Anything but the Anakin Crywalker of today. 5. *Show* *off* *Ani's* *talents*. A pod race, dual-wielding and saber-skills are just not enough to make a convincing Chosen one. Isn't he supposed to be like the Harry Potter of Star Wars? Then where does he prove that he's way more skilled than the other Jedi? But I guess he can lift fruit... It's just that Yoda could lift an entire *ship*. 6. *No* *factory* *scene*. The factory scene was awful. Enough said. 7. *Improve* *Jar* *Jar*. Make him less of the clown of Star Wars, and more of a subtle, charming, actually funny comic relief. Threepio and Artoo work so well because the funniness they bring isn't forced or cheap - they're ingeniusly scripted and charismatic characters. Do that * prods George with a stick *. 8. *Go* *for* *the* *silent* *scenes*. You know the scenes like when Boba holds up Jango's head and touch foreheads, or when Ani cries a little (surprise, surprise) in the temple, or Vader's march into the temple? Those were some of the most powerful scenes - without any lines spoken. More of those would have been great. 9. *Make* *me* *give* *a* *f*ck* *about* *Qui-Gon*. And not just because the character was a waste of the gift that is Liam Neeson, but also because I would not give a flying f*ck about Qui-Gon's death if it wasn't for Ewan McGregor's flawless acting. Some backstory would have been awesome. 10. *More* *Alderaan*. Some more exposure to Alderaan would have made the destruction of it in episode IV even more sad. And yeh, it's a beautiful planet.
@miriamdiedrich7524

And I would rewrite the "only a Sith deals in absolutes" line. There's a lot of things in the prequels that make no sense, but this one just irks me because there is so much dealing in absolutes in Star Wars. "That's no moon, it's a space station"? "You can benefit from this, or die"? "Do or do not, there is no try"? *The* *quote* *itself*? Something in the likes of "Geez, Ani. That hurt my feelings" or "what an awesome friendship this is" would have been better, and not just because "only a Sith deals in absolutes" is such an illogical line.

I agree with absolutely every single one of your suggestions! That sounds like a much better movie than what we actually got! There's only two more minor additions I'd make: 1. I'd introduce Darth Maul right at the beginning of the film and make it clear that he's the main villain behind the whole invasion. Maybe the Viceroy and Neimoidians would be around as figureheads for the Trade Fed, but Maul is truly the evil mastermind (a big problem with the actual film was the lack of a central villain, since the Viceroy didn't seem to know what was going on and Maul wasn't introduced until halfway through the movie and had no motivation of his own; he was just Palpatine's servant). Here it would be clear that Maul, although serving a master of his own, is our ultimate villain of this episode. 2. I'd have Anakin go to Naboo at the end (it may not make sense to take a kid to a battle, but whatever, let's just say they have nowhere to take him) and as a result, Anakin ends up WITNESSING Qui-Gon's death first-hand, which we're able to see scars him deeply.

Maybe to show how Obi-Wan is interested in Padme and make him more impulsive when he's young, have a slimy alien hitting on Padme and when she refuses him, he gets angry and Obi-Wan gets involved and it's a screaming match between the three of them until Obi whips out his lightsaber and chops the aliens arm off and they have to ditch the bar. Also, Bobba Fett can see them in the bar and be the one to report it to Maul

Eh... I think you're putting to much focus on Obi-Wan. The Prequel is about Anakin's fall, and you're inserting to much plot that will have to be transfered to Anakin(the romance with Padmé, Palpatine trying to turn Obi-Wan) for the story to work out within its limited time span. Having Obi-Wan as the main character brings an interesting perspective, but it doesn't leave enough time for us to understand Anakin's fall to the dark side, and how he became Darth Vader.
@octoberson
@octoberson 10 жыл бұрын
Obi Wan makes sense to be the central protagonist for a few reasons. He's a good bridge from the prequels to the original trilogy in order to pass the torch on to Luke. We know he's a good guy based on where he ended up, but it doesn't mean he's without faults. Obi Wan's taking Luke under his wing (as well as staying on Tattooine) shows his investment in the future of the galaxy as well as trying to correct the faults of his failings as a teacher to Anakin. Having Anakin as part of the greater story they're telling makes a lot more sense than just focusing on him the entire time. Besides, part of what divested me from liking the prequels out of many other reasons, is the fact that you know in the end how Anakin's going to turn out. As an audience member watching these movies, you had to give me a character to cheer on and hope they succeed. That character was always going to be Obi Wan for me. Not in the actual prequels we got, unfortunately, but if this "what if", he definitely would have been the hero.
@TwinHuginHelmet
@TwinHuginHelmet 10 жыл бұрын
I'm not arguing Obi-Wan is a good protoganist, quite on the contrary, he's the most obvious choice. It's just that Belated Media attaches to many plot points to him in his this video. Palpatine wanting Obi-Wan as an apprentice instead of Anakin, Obi-Wan getting a sort-of romance with Padmé(admittedly, he starts transferring it to Anakin in his WIE2WG). My point is that it's going to become really messy to turn these things around from Obi-Wan to Anakin(mainly Palpatine grooming him into his apprentice). As it is now, it's the same exact scenario as the one we saw in the actuall prequels; with little foreshadowing, the entirey of Anakin's fall will take place in one single movie, something that was rather awkward in the real version. In fact, the scenario is slightly worse, since Palpatine is presumably still after Obi-Wan. The following isn't really a response to your comment per se, but I started thinking a bit... I think the fall of Ani was poorly handled in the prequels. There were a lot of things that they could've done and used to their advantage that they didn't. Since they had to go with the "chosen one"-thing, the movie-makers could've used it to put pressure on Anakin, and as a reason as to why he wants more power; everyone expects great things from him, and he's not confident in his abilities, so he seeks alternative paths(perhaps even dabbling amateurishly in the Dark side relatively early on, getting shot down by the council when they hear of it). The fact that he was raised as a slave could be used to motivate a side of him who is willing to hurt others to protect his loved ones(having to fight against muggers and other slaves on Tatooine). This is also a pointer to the darker side of his character, and gives us some foreshadowing for his later crimes(slaughtering younglings, etc). If they could combine this with a through the movies increasing attitude of the Ends justifying the means, they could have a great way to make his fall gradual, as he starts using less and less Jedi-like methods, and becomes a more ruthless commander and fighter. Idealy we should see real signs of this as early as Episode two. So... yeah. I've been going off-topic for a bit, but what the heck. The above are my takes on elements that could've been used to make the birth of Darth Vader more plausible and less forced. It's not what we started talking about, but it felt good writing it down and getting these things out. Cheers :)

Papadragon18 It seems you missed the point made in the video that Palpatine hinting that Obi-Wan was his targeted apprentice was just a decoy to throw everyone off his "real" target who WAS Anakin. Also, if handled well, it makes sense to have multiple plot points bouncing off a central character (Obi-Wan in this case) as it helps the audience invest into seeing how he handles himself with everything going on around him.
@TwinHuginHelmet
@TwinHuginHelmet 10 жыл бұрын
GameOverV1 I never got the feeling Palpatine was trying to fool people into thinking he wanted Obi-Wan as an apprentice as a decoy, but sure. True enough. As long as it's handled well, which I'm worried it won't(The ending of Belated Media's WIE2WG was rather awkward IMO, and I'd hate for the entire procedure of Anakin's fall(which has no foreshadowing what-so-ever in this series, a major issue if you want to make a fall that makes sense) go the same way, just because there wasn't enough time in this render of the prologue trilogy). I guess only time will tell(i.e. when Belated Media does WIE3WG).

I think many people make the mistake of thinking that the most interesting character has to be the protagonist. That is sometimes the case but not necessary to telling a good story. In the original trilogy Luke is the protagonist but definitely not the most interesting character. He might not even be top 3. But events circle around him and the connections he has and the decisions he makes. In the set up that George gave us Obi-Wan is really the only character that can be that.

MrSnakearter It was actually suggested heavily at Ep 5:"Too old he is, to begin the training!". . . "A Jedi must have the deepest commitment: the most serious mind." The training Yoda gave Luke was more or less in line w/a fighting monk's lifestyle, tho a bit rushed, ofc, by necessity. The actual nature of the discipline was indeed unseen before Ep 1, but it was always in the backstory. In the original drafts, Vader was an honorable man and boot-heel-turned to assist the Jedi because of it. Discipline was always in mind for Force wielders, tho the Sith got morphed into a more flexible, yet dishonorable mess of evil for evil's sake later on, while the Jedi became utterly rigid in 1 - 3. He still can use the force but like jumping around and that... he hasn't done this for years an then a few years later ha passed away so he couldn't do that but in the new trilogy he is younger and like.. the biggest Jedi ever so, at this point it was a good idea to make him GC!

Very well done. My main objection that this characterization of Obi-Wan as first naive (war is fun!), then jealous (why is Anakin better than me), then tempted (ooh pretty girl), then vengeful (developing a standing grudge against Darth Maul) is not at all what George Lucas built him to be, and it is not the character we knew in Episode IV. Yes it's a much more rich character you have created, but it isn't Obi-Wan Kenobi. That is not the guy who becomes a stoic, enlightened hermit. Obi-Wan is the "teacher" paragon, and the teacher must be above such moral turbulence as is necessary for a main character.

darthen856 I concur. Although we do see a few bad decisions and strokes of poor judgement in *Attack* and *Revenge*, it's really not enough to justify what he says in *Empire*. But there's also the fact that we really don't see Yoda training him at any point--it's assumed to just all be on Qui-gon "I-don't-sense-anything" Djinn.

Jedis aren't meant to fall in love though, are they? It makes sense for Anakin to do this (especially with Padmé as she's an established character after the first film) as he turns to the Dark Side. Why make Obi-Wan fall in love? Can't compare him to a non-Jedi relationship like Han and Leia. Personally I like fresh plots and ideas. Why recycle patterns and plots we've seen from the originals? George brought back the characters, settings, and more. We don't need the love interests too.

Even so, I'm just referencing the points made in the video, and pointing out how Jedis aren't supposed to fall in love. Isn't that a rule? Did Obi-Wan break that then? If I'm mistaken on the rule, then fair enough. My knowledge on the saga is pretty basic. Still think the plot of the films ran fine with Anakin and Padme.

Kelvin Casing I was thinking the same thing; Grievous was canonically a former apprentice of Dooku who lost all his organs except his heart and brain, so there’s no reason it couldn’t have been Maul. Then the action in Episode 3 where Obi-Wan goes after Grievous for like half an hour would be worth something and be satisfying. Then, we would find out that this villain that we’ve been following was nothing more than a prop, and the real villain is rising behind him and Anakin will become the true villain.

@@beatlecristian That's certainly one of them. I think the prequels lend themselves to a rewrite is because the overall story arc is very clear and has alot of potential: its the tragic fall of Anakin and the Republic. Its more how that story is told at a lower level where most of its weakness lie. The sequels suffer more from high level structural issues. I feel like its rather confused on what story its even trying to tell. As I've heard people say: The prequels are a good story told poorly, the sequels are a poor story told well. To improve the sequels, I think you pretty much need to tell a different story.

That's kind of the point. We are throwing out the expired milk that is the existing PT and replacing it with good fresh milk that makes more sense and is better. Ok, so not a totally solid milk analogy, but the point is that the only thing that is being retained from the PT are character names, settings, and most of the major plot points.

In fiction you could do just about anything. You could have a love triangle between obi wan, Padme, and Anakin in Episode 2. Padme could have a cute sister who goes for the slightly evil force sensitive types. I really wanted Anakin to do some bad stuff, to foreshadow his future self. Nope, nothing. I also found the editing pretty bad in the action area. I took the VHS a while back and edited the complete light saber battle with no cuts, just to see it the way it should of been. It was VERY powerful that way. The lack of dialogue made it even more intense, although there should have been a little bit in there.

Besides, The Hulk and Spider-Man were redone just a couple years after their previous versions... it's been almost a decade since the prequels ended. following on from anakin being older it’s also conceivable to push episode II backwards, turning it into ep I and starting the PT from that later point instead. i think that would feel snappier as we’d get straight into the real story instead of messing about on tatooine looking for spare parts. the lack of bg for anakin and his incredible powers wouldn’t have to be a problem if there was a (little) flashback at the beginning, witnessing his prophetic arrival as a young, newly-rescued slave boy on coruscant w/ qui gon and obi wan. that could be way more dramatic than his intro in TPM ever was, and he’d more explicitly be ‘a new hope’; nice parallels. there’d also be a lot more mystery around his mother; what happened to her, why he’s haunted by her etc. (parallels to luke and leia’s own mysterious parents). we’d also be left to work out how he and padmé know each other, being from such different bgs (royalty vs slavery). adding a third film between AOTC and ROTS could feel bloated but it could also allow for some much-needed development: of padmé and anakin's relationship, of the political and diplomatic strife in the galaxy (explaining why anyone would turn to the empire to begin with!), and of palpatine’s manipulation of annie. i think it could work well.

I agree with most of the points, except for the politics. I know they seemed boring to everyone else, but it really shows how the Empire got started. The originals made it seem as though the only way to rule government was through the Force. Here, it showed how politics in the universe worked, therefore setting up the chain of events that led to the downfall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire beyond the Jedi and the Sith.

I think you at least need SOME politics and diplomacy in order to help expand and build the world of Star Wars, but not make it the central theme of your entire story. This video certainly hasn’t aged well. At the time it was great, but the prequels have only gotten better with time in no small part to the expanded media. These rewrite replace so many of the great parts of the prequels VERY unnecessarily and what there replaced with, are never interesting. And my biggest gripe is that you focus too much on trying to keep things a surprise over trying to have a good story. III is the perfect example of this. In the actual movie, Anakin’s turn to the dark side is legitimately tragic and heartbreaking. In the rewrites, it’s so glossed over that it doesn’t have the same weight.
