Think about it though. Luke and Leia both have the force and they felt a pull towards each other. That probably felt romantic at first because they didn't know what that connection was, they are fraternal twins after all so they would have some kind of connection

It seems very clear to me that it is by seeing the parallel between his own hand and Vader's being cut off that Luke is able to pull back, at the last moment, from the dark side of the force and resist the emperor; that is the plot function of his hand being cut off in the first place. And to make sure you remember, at the crucial moment, that Luke's hand was cut off, this movie has his artificial hand sustain cosmetic damage early in the movie, causing him to wear the black glove for the rest of the picture. You're right that Yoda told Luke he must "confront" Vader; it's Kenobi who thought Luke had to kill him. I've always thought that Kenobi misunderstood Yoda on one other point as well, when Yoda spoke of another Skywalker, or another "hope." Kenobi thinks Yoda meant Leia; but I think that what Yoda really meant was that it would be a mistake to give up hope for Anakin's return to his true self. That's why Luke had to "confront" Vader, to bring him back to the good side so that he could kill the emperor. I don't think anyone could have defeated the emperor head-on; the blow had to come from an unexpected quarter, from someone whom the emperor thought was irrecoverably under his control.
