I grew up with bad ass space princess Leia as my hero. This crap they have done with star wars just makes me well angry. its insulting to men and women as well as just bad story telling. Star wars was for everyone it was big, epic and made a little girl like me dream of flying a spaceship and fighting with swords. I never felt like I wasn't part of star wars or that star wars wasn't for me as a girl because I knew it was for me, Its for everyone. saying star wars needs a woman director or writer for me to enjoy it is just insulting. The director or writer needs to be passionate about the topic no matter what they identify as, that doesn't matter and it shouldn't matter especially for a film about a galaxy far far away.

This movie's going to have at least one scene where the female characters lambast the male characters or just outright demean, emasculate, overpower, outperform, and/or make fools of them, on the basis of nothing other than 'because we are female and you are men'. They do it every single time, without fail, and people will just say "I-it wasn't THAT bad" because they don't want to anger the twitter mob. The fact that people see these scenes now and just expect them and accept them and say "Well aside from the (woke crap) this tv show/movie wasn't TOO bad" as opposed to rightfully criticizing them ten years ago, is not a sign that these movies are getting better. It's a sign that the tired and desperate Marvel and Disney fandoms are completely beaten down to the point where they'll accept anything as long as it's more content which means their favorite franchise isn't quite COMPLETELY dead yet... The restaurant analogy. You purchase a popular, long running restaurant franchise with solid theme bult up over decades and a solid customer base who loving remember going there as children. The menu is based on tasty comfort food and big portions. As the new owner you have a dream to make people change their eating habits. You begin to add to the menu new items not in line with the old menu. They are healthy, small portion items that tick all the right buzz words. Vegan, sustainable, ethical, gluten free and low calorie. But are ultimately tasteless, unfulfilling and unmemorable. To promote the new menu items, you begin to diminish and remove old fan favourites. You begin to lose money and cop bad reviews. In addition, some of the real die-hard fans of the restaurant take to social media and really stick it to you. Rather than understanding your customer base you fight back, calling them toxic and double down on your new menu as well as hiring long standing activists and promoters of ethical food to manage your franchise. At this point the entirety of the fan base is looking on with disbelief and shear bewilderment at what you are serving up. Yes, the logo is there, the familiar music and decor. But the food has completely disconnected from what they remember. In disappointment they quietly leave. Eventually you go broke.

Thank you for clearing that up. It's definitely not fair that she's being criticized for saying she "likes to make men uncomfortable" if she was talking about murderers. She was taken out of context. The fans would not have a problem with female protagonists or a female director because female influence is not unheard of in Star Wars. What fans were ultimately angry about was the new films destruction of legacy characters and message of hope the original trilogy had.

I get the sentiment but I believe the reality is a bit more complex than saying "Disney as a corporation is evil and greedy" I mean a corporation can't be greedy because a corporation isn't a conscious entity. But of course it consists of many people who are conscious. And sure there might be greedy people among them. But I'm also sure even those people are aware that the best way to make more money is to deliver a product their costumers will enjoy. And they probably each have their own ideas about what that would entail. But of course nobody knows upfront what will or won't be successful. Each person is a cog in the machine and they all need to need to make sure the machine keeps running. So of course they need to make a lot of money. You don't want to be the one responsible for the decline of a multi billion dollar company with over 200.000 employees. The problem is the same as always. Disney is run by humans. And humans are fallible and have (in a general sense) no idea what they are doing most of the time. But that is a problem we have in all layers of society, not just Hollywood. So Disney = evil? They know they exist in a patriarchal world, yet these women overcome this obstacle through incredible hard work and sacrifice to become the amazing characters they are. In our world, like in star wars, misogyny and sexualisation exist (hello, Leia in a bikini as a major sex symbol). Pretending it doesnt exist OR screaming about it DOES NOT SPEAK TO YOUR FEMALE FANS. The characters I mentioned before are far more representative of women's struggles both in their galaxy and our own. Padmé even inspired me to get into politics. Something they don't consider too, just because you're a woman it doesn't mean you don't relate to men, just like me being black does not mean I feel represented by blacks only. I feel more represented by Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop the anime which is written by a Asian Japanese man and the character is a Jewish Bounty Hunter who does Martial Arts in outer space. Your gender or skin color is not the only thing that makes you, you and that's what these people are always boiling it down to. I'm 35, but growing up I did not care or ask for black representation. There were always black characters around and I liked some and not others, but I didn't feel represented by black characters just because they were black. My favorite Super hero is the Flash. Some of my favorite characters are Blade, Static Shock, The flash, Gohan, Spike, Luke Skywalker, Vash, Kenshin Himura, L from Death note, Edward Full Metal Alchemist, Bit Cloud, Sly From Sly Cooper, if I made a list it would be huge and it would include some women too. Some are black, white, Asian, animal-humanoids, Aliens, Half Alien Human Hybrids, male female, robots, androids, it don't matter. And as far as living in a Patriarchal world....that's the default of reality and nobody really cared until recent human history and there's been instances of matriarchies in human history both good and bad that have committed atrocities too so it's not like it matters if the scene is patriarchal or matriarchal. So anyone pushing these ideals are wrong and foolish.

The greatest irony of the whole push of identity politics, I’d argue, is that it feels like it has created more intolerance than the time before it being pushed. Late 90’s to early 00’s you had a great rise of shows, movies and games having more diversity, celebrities of all types were popular as hell, even before that you had notable comedy tv shows with almost entirely black casts that were massively popular. You could genuinely argue we were becoming more progressive in general, sure you still had intolerance but that’s never going away entirely but it was quieter. But once tolerance became mandated and diversity and inclusivity started to be pushed deep, down our collective throats and suddenly everyone who thought the wrong things became the villains. It began to create resentment within many people that previously found themselves quite accepting.

Simply said, the more somebody fronts an idea, the more they lack it. In a culture of perfection, people try to cover their faults by loud mouthing the opposite. Because diversity and inclusion is the current secular religion, reason says it’s because that’s what they are bad at.

How many universities now have segregation again? Funny how many districts in cities are also being more and more segregated. Notice how the ones pushing for segregation now are the same groups that pushed in back in the day (Often the same people who have been in power that long), just reframing it as good for blacks rather than good for whites. Funny how they've managed to delude people into voting for the ones keeping them in chains (less literal now, but the Constitution has that neat little loophole that allows slavery in the one instance that certain group has worked tirelessly to make as many black people a part of as possible) and pushing segregation and racism at every turn while pretending like they are the good guys. Funny that.

If you leave people alone, most of them will be very tolerant and willing to be inclusive to everyone. But when you get in their faces and tell them they’re the bad guys for not agreeing with you, they will disagree on sheer principle. And they will be less tolerant because they see it as abetting the people they don’t like. I used to not have a problem with this stuff. I was very much in the ‘you don’t bother me, I don’t bother you’ camp. But now that inclusivity is being shoved down our throats constantly, I get so tired of it and want it all to leave me alone.

@@cybertramon0012Spot on, The more they push it the less tolerable I become and that's with nearly everything in life. Whether it's some of the covid lies they pushed or climate change or all this diversity stuff, Shove it in my face and I will either research the truth or ignore their BS entirely.

Expecting Disney to make a Star Wars film that fans want to watch, is like expecting Lucy to hold the football in place, when Charlie Brown runs to give it a kick.

So, why would Disney make a Star Wars film that fans Do Not want to watch?

It's just sad how a franchise that big and so beloved around the world ends up as a playground for companies and managers to drive their agendas forward instead of creating compelling intriguing and aspiring story's for their audience. That's really messed up.

I love that you took the High Road (or shall I say "The High Ground") when adressing Chinoy's comments from years back, their context and how they shouldn't be taken out of context. I don't think at all she's qualified for the job and I question the motives why she *specifically* was hired to direct the next SW-Movie, but one should be fair with criticism.
