All the recent E3 shilling, screaming, screeching and whooping over NOTHING prompted me to lock myself away with one of my favourite games of all time and complete it again. I just want to let you see how gaming used to be and am sure a large amount of my viewers already know this anyway :) Hopefully the devs of the new Star wars game have taken notice of the old classics, I doubt it but we can live in hope.

@Isaac Clarke *rubs thumb and forefinger together menacingly* AAA just doesn't give a shit about single-player games anymore, they want a clash-of-clans or WoW-style subscription service, or it just isn't worth their time, apparently. I am so done with AAA, and every franchise that I used to love, people like us aren't the preferred audience anymore, because we aren't brain-dead whales.

I'm a young one, turning 19 this year. Brought this game and played it after watching your video comparing this to the combat in the Witcher 3 and I must thank you for opening my eyes when you did a few years ago. I realized everything I had been missing with all the shit that is put out there by the gaming industry in the last few years. I've been playing almost exclusively old games since then to experience all the gems I've missed and will never be made again in the foreseeable future. So again, thank you for opening my eyes Mack. The last couple years of gaming has been unforgettable thanks to you!

@@Arglactable I feel you and have played all the games you mentioned :) and your avatar bring back good old memories. When I remember how many times i got lost on that station and how many times I couldn't find codes for doors. ah, those were the days when you needed brain for figuring out stuff. The only good game in the last decade that I had fun and got lost on the way trying to find items and paths to progress was Dark Souls. That game has great lvl design.
@TheQuantumShell
@TheQuantumShell 5 жыл бұрын
@@Arglactable I hope in the future we'll see more games that are complex and have great lvl design like we use to have back in the day, but that would need a huge change on gamers mentality that we have today. Majority of new gamers are not into it. They want it all served on the platter with one button mashing and "I want to win" now button. This decade was a huge downfall in game design and how every decade is very different than the previous one I just really hope we see a huge turn around towards quality gaming. The new game that FromSoftware is making with George R.R. Martin is taken me by surprise. They talk about open world. How will they approach it is a real mystery to me. It could be something new and fresh as they haven't done anything like it before or it could fall flat. I hope not :)

I'd say that Classic SWBFII is still a strong contender considering Galactic Conquest. Would completely blow everything out of the water if the superior PC version with higher troop counts had access to the local co-op/versus of the console version. Game basically becomes a grand strategy, first person shooter, space combat game when playing against a friend in Galactic Conquest as they both fight to dominate the map. Alas this is all talk of a long dead golden age.

It's sad to think that a game from nearly twenty years ago has better lightsaber combat than modern star wars games. Have devs working on star wars games ever played jedi academy? They should have taken notes from these games instead of dark souls and the witcher. Also, for anybody reading this including mack, check out a mod for jedi academy called movie battles 2. It's an online class based mod with the most realistic lightsaber combat you will ever see. Tons of classes with various weapons, lots of maps that the players vote on and it's one of those experiences where funny shit happens all the time. It's really hard to master but my god is it a good experience. The community on certain servers is a bit toxic (tR servers) but if you find a decent server it is great fun. Not that many people play it nowadays but there's always enough usually for two or three full servers and i highly recommend checking it out.

To be honest, most of the triple A games are not going to change much because they are maximizing profit when they put less emphasis on actual game development and more on marketing. It's unfortunate, but it also gives Indie developers a chance to prove themselves. There are a lot of indie gems out there. I guess we'll wait and see what the second half of 2019 brings us.

You are in control of your character. You point at what you want to hit (with a mouse not a controller) and if your weapon connects with the enemy you get a hit. In most modern games all you are doing by pushing buttons is triggering a fancy animation with your enemy. The first time the animation looks cool, the 1000th time after a few hours of gaming it is just a snooze. Watching this gameplay reminds me again of Mount and Blade. One of the last oldschool PC games that still survive (maybe...cause Bannerlord) :(

Multiplayer isn't dead. There's a mod called Movie Battles 2 which allows you to play multiplayer and there's a huge variety of characters to play as. A couple other things about Jedi Outcast I would want to know if I was considering it after this review: - You keep your full arsenal even after getting your saber/force powers, and bullets/rockets/explosives are physics objects that you can manipulate with Force Push/Pull. Combine that with Force Speed and you can play as a superpowered commando if you want. - There are some massive semi-open world levels in the game too; it's not just linear hallways. - Force Grip at max level lets you move enemies around freely. You can whip them around and fling them away or off high places too. It's not just a slow, passive kill.

I used to have favourite levels I would go back to and play (like the level where you are start by fighting a whole load of storm troopers). It balanced being difficult with making you feel so powerful in a way I haven’t experienced in a game since. Great critique on modern gaming. Here is my own experience: I am tied to PUBG with my friends. I typically play every major "AAA" shooter that comes down the pike, at least the single player campaigns. I had a craving for old-school fun, so I reinstalled the 2016 Doom and started dabbling in the campaign on hard. Like you, I 'sperged out initially. This thing was tough, at least for me! I had been softened up by total fucking garbage over the years. But in the end, I had a BLAST. Guess what? My PUBG performance improved. No longer was I pissed about getting run up on or losing midrange engagements. I was the guy leading the squad because I was confident I could snap to a target the fastest out of all my friends. Folks, play the older stuff again. You will enjoy it, even if the learning curve is steep!

I absolutely love this game, not only for the single player but the multiplayer lightsaber duels were a blast. I was never the best with the lightsaber but was great at using force powers, I loved the tie fighter hanger bay map as force choking my friends and dropping them out of one of the openings was always great fun, and really used to get people raging.

Long time fan of this series of games (Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Jedi Knight II, etc.). Thanks for all your reviews Mack. Two of my current favorites are Arma 3 and Prey. I wouldn't have bought them without watching your reviews. I'd have bought some other trash that I hated.

The combat in this looks more fun than the new Star Wars game coming out. The problem with new AAA games is the devs/publishers want it to look good all the time, and that usually results in the devs limiting what the player can do to reduce the number of situations they have to account for when making all their animations flow smoothly and whatnot. It would be almost impossible to have the kind of free-flowing combat like this game without conceding that it's going to look a bit strange at times. So now we get massively compromised combat mechanics that look "cinematic"...

Think I’ve finished this game about 12 or more times and double that for Jedi Academy. It has the best lightsaber combat in all the games. Every now and then I just turn that on and play some saved moments in the Jedi Temple vs 4 Reborn robots and hack my way through.

This is also my all-time favorite game. I was already playing it back in 2003 and I still play it at least 2 times a year! For a game this old, the graphics are still very acceptable. In 2003 - 2004, I played the multiplayer version of this game for at least 7 - 8 hours a day !

More like this! Loving the retro reviews Mac. I loved Dark Forces 1 & 2, don't know how I managed to completely miss Jedi Outcast. I remember in DF 2 you had to put in a lot of work before you got hold of a light sabre - made it seem really special. It was also cool how the virtue of your actions would lead you down the different sides of the force, each with their own awesome force powers. Did anyone ever play a game called boiling point? Came out in 2005 I think. I really enjoyed it and thought it was lightyears ahead of it's time, but I've never met anyone else who actually played it.

*warning* Before you play, the initial resolution and other graphical changes made are extremely low quality. It's about 640x480/ 800x600, meaning you get that horrible compressed screen if you alt tab or try to escape to desktop with the game running. I'd recommend using the "Jedi knight expanded menu mod" as it has a much easier to navigate main menu, as well as other neat options like being able to choose a custom resolution. (naturally 1920x1080 would be preferable for most monitors). That's mainly the reason you'd want to use it, but it also unlocks other settings in the config menu that weren't available to change in the base game (besides editing the config file but that's fiddly and takes too much time). It also comes with an expanded cheat menu if you happen to use those so you rely less on the debug dev menu. It also dials up the decapitation on your lightsaber so it's a neat little package and really does bring the game into the modern era. Also, if it doesn't let you play because you don't have the CD, you can easily download a CD-fix patch off the internet.

Good one, Mack. I remember being a fan of Dark Forces and Jedi Knight: Dark Forces back in the day and I was so looking forward to Jedi Outcast coming out in 2002, because of Raven Software, who made my favorite games Heretic 1&2 and Hexen 1&2. Those were the days... Oh well, back to the unfulfilling present.

Oh so many memories. My first online matches with lightsaber dueling, just wonderful. The only small issue I had was with the force speed. It's ridiculously OP. :D You can melt any boss by just force speeding (which slows down the game) and seeing them go in slow motion and delicately chopping off the bad guy's head. :D But it's a really great game nonetheless.

Games Then : required skill, use of logic and patience . levels that required you to manually travel through them and puzzles that actually presented a challenge . Games Released as a whole product , Patches were sparse but free. No Battle royale in the early to mid 2000's Games now : Literally impossible to fail even if you try to fail , 5 minute long CGI cut scenes and QTE's that take you out of the game any time that there's a "difficult " Section . having to do fetch quests with flashy glowly arrows telling you exactly where to go is considered a puzzle . Developers intentionally cut out game play and sell it as DLC / Micro transactions , patches either happen too often and end up wrecking the essential game play or no patches at all . Battle royale is literally the only Genre in 2019 (2016- God knows when the fad will die )

Mack ! Bought and finished this under your recommendation. Absolute top notch start to finish. I forgot about the outdated graphics after 5 mins. Proper puzzles. No glowing 'click this bit next' bullshit. Gun play superb. Lightsaber acrobatics surprisingly satisfying considering this was quake engine stuff. Best thing I've played in years. More retro reviews please.

I loved this game back in the day. Easily the Jedi style game we got out of all the Star Wars games. My only complaint was the melee combat felt too floaty, the way it was designed with the movement keys being tied to combat led to what was known as the "ice skating" effect, where basically visually the combat felt like people were just ice skating around instead of well, looking like a real jedi fight (it's still good, but just could have been better imo). I wish the combat would have been more like Severance, which is one of the few melee action games of that era that solved the whole "ice skating" issue that plagued many great action games with how its controls worked.

It funny you mentioned the hard puzzles without the hand holding. I got to thinking when I was like 13 and finished “Laura bow and the dagger of Amon Ra” for the first time and you are supposed to tell who murdered each person in the game. And I didn’t even know the names of the victims. I don’t even think I’d get it right to this day. Such a great game.
