Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, often abbreviated JK2 or JO, is a first/third-person action game developed by Raven Software and published by LucasArts and Activision. The PC version was released in March 2002 and the Mac OS X, Xbox and GameCube versions in November 2002. Powered by the Quake III: Team Arena game engine, the game primarily revolves around ranged and melee combat, with the player capable of wielding classic Star Wars weapons such as blasters, lightsabers and Force powers.
The game features both single-player and multiplayer modes. The story-driven single-player campaign is set in the Star Wars Expanded Universe two years after the events of Mysteries of the Sith, Jedi Outcast's predecessor. The plot follows protagonist Kyle Katarn as he fights against the Dark Jedi Desann and his followers.The game was critically well-received on all platforms, with scores between 75 and 89/100 according to Metacritic's composite averages.
In 2003, a sequel titled Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy was released for the Xbox, Mac OS and PC. In 2006, the PC version was re-released with four other Star Wars games in a pack entitled Star Wars: The Best of PC. On September 16, 2009, the game was re-released with the other Jedi Knight games (Star Wars: Dark Forces, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, Mysteries of the Sith and Jedi Academy) onto Steam and Direct2Drive.
Following Disney's decision to close LucasArts on April 3, 2013, the developers at Raven Software released the source code for the game on Sourceforge under GNU GPLv2 licensing. Shortly after this release, the source was removed because it had been found to contain proprietary libraries specific to the Xbox and Bink Video.

One of my most favorite games of all time. Pretty much the only Star Wars game in which the developers understood how lightsabers work (or would work); they SLICE things. It seems like in every other SW game the lightsaber is just an electrified glowy bat with which you just hit people until they fall (The Force Unleashed, Battelfront II, etc.). Characters in Jedi Outcast have their limbs chopped of, just as it's suppossed to be (even better if you introduce the dismemberment cheat)

I think that's because they want to make games for talentless kids as well. Imagine an 11 year old playing Jedi Knight, he'd get totally destroyed. Lightsabers are punishing, that's why they're so effective, Force Unleashed games sucked just because of that. Who would want to make 6 hit combos on a single stormtrooper with a lightsaber?

The best part to me was all the secret moves and maneuvers you could pull off. I remember pressing tons of different button combos and trying different things to see what would happen. Many of them were super useful and in the multiplayer. And since this was the days where looking something up on the internet was in its infancy, you really felt great when you discovered a new maneuver all by yourself.

I just loved the rawness of the game. Like, it had a sandbox feel to it, as if you were playing the game in dev mode. No "return to battlefield", no unnecessary invisible walls (unless they just didn't develop that part of the map). Complete utter freedom. That's what I miss about the 00s games.

Of all the Star Wars games I have played this one is probably my favorite. That partly is to do with Kyle Katarn being my favorite Star Wars character period. Yes I am ticked with Disney for declaring his adventures non-canonical. Won't stop me from enjoying them though.

Jedi Outcast was apparently built ontop of Star Trek Voyager Elite Force. If you play both games back to back you'll notice a lot of similarities with how the weapons handle, the particle effects and general texture/level design similarities. One of the developers of Outcast even stated in the earliest build of the game Stormtroopers were Klingons that were textured white. The game was also released at around the same time as Soldier of Fortune 2 and there are clearly a lot of similarities between the two. Like how they both share a lot of the same animations.

Above all, I remember the honorable online duels and all the etiquette surrounding it. It was mandatory to bow to your opponents for example and woe to you if you ever attacked someone who had their lightsaber deactivated.

Yeah, this game had the best Lightsaber duelling. Other games didn't do any good with the lightsaber. Battlefront 2 just has 3 hit attacks (it makes sense though as that game focuses more on soilders and wars) and Force Unleashed having one button combo attacks. Episode 3 game had good fighting but it wasn't very "realistic". Academy also ruined the duelling with dual sabers and double bladed sabers. If you had a dual or double bladed, you can easily defeat anyone with one saber. The dueling itself also seems to be downgraded in that game. Basicly, this game had the best, realistic atacking, defending and a few cool moves (Academy got too far with so many moves).

Same, I never understood the complaints. Kejim Base has to be one of the most well-designed and believable Star Wars video game locales ever made. The mines dragged on a liiiitle too long to be fair. I remember a guy at gamestop telling me to use cheats to get the lightsaber immediately because the first levels are boring but they set you up so well to feel the power of progression from mercenary to Jedi/mercenary hybrid.

I personally loved how you didn't start out with a lightsaber. It made obtaining the lightsaber that much more satisfying and rewarding. the levels leading up to it were badass too. I thought raiding Kejim Outpost at night was sick.

This was the best Kyle Katarn game by far. I played it through so many times. I also remember using console commands to do some crazy stuff. There was a room with cutting lasers that had to be disabled to get through. I turned them off, spawned 50 Landos in the room, and then turned them on. As the lasers hit the Landos they all say "hey! watch it buddy!" then after getting hit too many times they all started blasting each other. To this day I crack up thinking about it. Then there was a level where you sneak into Bespin. The door is at the bottom and is actually an air exhaust that has to be timed or you get blown off the platform. You might have guessed. I spawned a ton of Landos right in front of the door and laughed as they echoed "whoa!!" as they each got blown off the platform one after another in rapid succession. Jokes aside, the story was great. The locations and weapons were great. I really enjoyed this game, and would love another like it. It was as good as KOTOR, but had a different feel to it. It was one of the 3 great series of SW games. For me they are 1. the fighter simulator games of X-Wing with it's two expansions and TIE Fighter with it's one expansion. Then 2. the Kyle Katarn games of Dark Forces/Jedi Knight. And finally, 3. KOTOR and KOTOR II. Those were the games that made it feel like you were part of the Star Wars Universe, and not just playing a game with SW characters. Don't get me wrong, there were other good games. But those 3 series to me were the best at making me get lost in the story and enjoy myself.

Just played through it for the very 1st time on the original Xbox after buying it at a retro gaming store in Central Texas. Here at the end of good ol' 2016. Cutting edge modern graphics be damned. This game rocks. Very difficult in some areas, but like KOTOR it manages to make you feel very much like you're inside the SW universe. I've been gaming since 1982 and this is one of my favorite games of all time.

This was also ones of those games where it was equally fun to use cheat codes as it was to play legally. You could access things which was not possible otherwise, for eg changing saber colour, being able to play NPC's with "setmindtrick 4" or flying an X-wing (which was pretty much impossible because the maps weren't large enough but still pretty cool). Or you could just start off with your lightsaber with maxed force powers from the start, feeling like a badass jedi without waiting for that until the end of the game.

this game is awesome and lots of fun. i love the slow progress, you can't just become a jedi in 10 mins, it takes years of practice, and that's how good games should be, it gives you something to expect to, and once you become a true jedi you know you earned it. many games are just ruined by the fact that you get all the weapon on start and there's just nothing new for the rest of the game

5:22 wouldn't this be a good thing? Pacing is important and it's one of the major things that the prequel films got wrong. I personally like that they tried making the first few levels like the previous Dark Forces games, so that players of those games will feel right at home and can easily pick up and start playing this one. If this game were like Jedi Academy, and literally gave you a lightsaber as soon as you started the first level, I think it would cheapen the overall experience. That game really heavilly exploits the prequels though, whereas this game feels like a good mixture of Shadows of the Empire's combat and level design (in the early stages) mixed in with the Original (only) trilogy, and it's neat to come face to face with memorable characters from those movies and even be able to fight alongside some of them. EDIT: Also, isn't patience one of the fundementals of the force? Yoda and Obiwan both teach that having patience can really help you develop your abilities and that recklessness early on can get you killed or in trouble if you're not careful.

When I played this game I used dismemberment codes so that enemies could be chopped up to smaller pieces. It also caused weird but fun side effect to "final bosses" who sometimes just jumped off the edges and fell down to their deaths.

On my first playthrough of this game back when it came out, after every lightsaber battle I'd reload and replay the whole fight multiple times before I'd had enough. After finishing it I must've replayed the final boss fight a hundred times. I've been playing video games since Lode Runner, and I've never done that in any other game.

I found that the best tactic to use against the Reborn was Force Grip followed by Saber Throw. If it connects, it's an instant kill. It was also fun to Force Grip them and then drop them off ledges. Or do a high jump and drop them at the apex of it. For some reason, they can jump just as high as Kyle, but if you carry them up and then drop them, it damages or kills them. I also liked Force Pulling stormtroopers while in the air and then watching the whole squad go crashing back to the ground.

The level right before the jedi retraining is an absolute nightmare, with no force powers and lightsaber against all the stormtroopers and laser cannons in a wide open area.. .after that the Rodians with their Tenloss disruptor rifles was a piece of cake.It does take quite a long time though.

Great story, great combat (even if the enemies moving so erraticly are hard to shoot before you got powers), good duration. I think every single one of us are dreaming of a JK4 with the Battlefront engine... Which probably won't ever happend.

Of course enemies don't sit still, this is not a modern dumbed down shooter with switches and keys labeled like a KISS concert. Those are for whiny kids that don't have gaming skills, Jedi Knight is for more matured gamer that can handle himself and explore around, not to mention the fine tunning of the lightsabre handling where you could direct/change the swing path and make combos. Did you know about that?

I think part of the problem is that the weapons were not fun or effective enough to fight the frenetic and fidgety enemies in JO. For example: Return to Castle Wolfenstein had similar enemy AI, but the weapons were pretty powerful, and you were able to hit your target. The blasters and other weapons are pretty much weak, and it takes forever to hit them. I know that some can be killed laser shots in the head if done right, but that requires quick reflexes and skill against the frenetic enemies. Though, I admit, Force Speed makes it much easier to hit enemies with the weak weapons.

No, the fps portion of Jedi outcast felt off exactly for that reason. The enemies were too dodgy / fast, while the weapons were very inaccurate and had a slow rate of fire (very unlike a standard fps of that age). And this combined created a frustrating experience. Its still got ok shooter mechanics, but its the lightsaber and force combat that give it the legendary status it has.

The weapons aren't hitscan, is the problem. You need to lead your shots against enemies who sporadically move back and forth, so you just end up holding down the alt fire on the stormtrooper rifle until everyone is dead. Makes no difference how "old school" or "hardcore" you pretend to be, the weapons just aren't up to the task. Those other "old school shooters" have precise, fast weapons, which is why you can snipe an imp halfway across the map with a shotgun while strafing at 30 mph. This game doesn't have that, so yeah it's frustrating. The shooting in this game is nowhere near the level of Half-Life or Quake and I think that's a legitimate criticism, considering you have to deal with it for 5 hours and on terrible levels like Nar Shaddaa.

The lightsaber combat in this game was incredible. I know JKA added some neat new wrinkles, but JK2 felt more balanced and ultimately feels better in the long run.

The biggest selling point of this game, were the saber duels. Yes you could totally cheese fights with cheap tactics (choke+throw, lightning, crouch+forward+attack combo oneshot just to name a few), but an honest 1 v 1 duel and being able to kill even the simplest enemies while holding back with nothing but sword skill was a phenomenal feeling. Especially with the one where you jumpflip over an enemy and slash at their heads. It was harder to pull of and more satisfying. Also yeah, for second playthrough I too did cheat in the lightsaber and powers.

I totally agree with your review. I love Jedi Knight 2. It's so fun hacking enemies with your lightsaber and using force powers to thrown people across the room. I also agree that it can be really frustrating trying to figure out where to go and alot of times you can get stumped and it can take a lot of searching for things. But once you get to Cloud City the game gets incredibly fun! You just have to get through the first half of the game. I just wish the regular weapons still had some use after you get the lightsaber. Mostly I never use them again, because the lightsaber is just so useful and realy helps with defense.

I agree with literally everything you said here. My only complaint is a tiny, nerd nitpick - Nar Shaddaa is a moon, not a planet. Also, anyone who does get this game, try the multiplayer mode called "Jedi Master", it's a lot of fun. It starts everyone with no Force Powers or lightsaber, and spawns weapons on the map. It also places one lightsaber somewhere on the map.. Once someone picks up the lightsaber, they become the Jedi Master, and gain maximum ranks in all Force abilities, but can ONLY use the lightsaber and the Force (that is, no guns or explosives). Also, everyone else on the map instantly joins a team _against_ the Jedi Master. Only the Jedi Master can earn points. If someone kills the Jedi Master, the lightsaber jumps out of their corpse towards the person who killed them.

Very memorable for me as this was one of the first couple of PC games I came home with for my first desktop build in the spring of 2004. I didn't know that about Mark Hamill and Soldier of Fortune II... ...but SoFII was the other 1st-person shooters that Spring of '04 for me I took in. Oh, and the stormtroopers running backwards - memorable. :P Good review.

I really love the character progression in this game. From Force-less merc to unstoppable Jedi. It's really satisfying. My only complaint, is like you said, sometimes you don't know where you're going and a few of the puzzles are a little crazy. They toned the difficulty down a bit too much in Jedi Academy though. I just played through recently and I was surprised how well it holds up.

This was the first 3D game that really impressed with its graphics. In the late 90s the 3D always felt so stiff and ugly. This was awesome and felt like a proper Star Wars game! And I loved how it reminded of Dark Forces in the FPS.

I remember the game very well. Actually, I was able to use the Force to dodge the shots with the combination of strafe and mouse turn. I tried to repeat this after many years of not playing "Jedi Outcast" but unsuccessfully so far.

This and Battlefront 2 are my favourite Star Wars games, this review makes me want to dust off my old copy and play it again. Did anyone else find Desann too easy to beat at the end of the game? I swear the some of the Dark Jedi and Shadowtroopers put up more of a challenge. Great Review mate.

I personally sadly never had the chance to get into the star wars game back then... since I wasn't into video games in the early 2000s... the most I played were top-view real time strategy games... So, my first Start Wars games were the PC Star Wars games that were like that. Then... later, from 2005-2006, I started playing more. I too love the Star Wars Battlefront games... I played the HELL out of Battlefront 2... with the same character and in matches with others... so... all the stats of my profile... were maxed out permanently.^^XD I also played Commando a lot and a LOT of the KotOR games.^^ I still want to play the Jedi Knight series one day... I just don't have much of time for video games anymore because of university...

Agreed. Desann's apprentice killed me around fifteen times before I beat her. In contrast, Desann went down to Force Speed plus randomly hacking away with my lightsaber in ten seconds my second try. It kind of detracts from the gravitas of the ending when your reaction to killing the final boss is "wait, what the fuck just happened?"

Dude, this game is awesome, but your complaints are on point. I got stuck on that mining level before you get your lightsaber for far longer than I care to admit; and Nar Shadaa? Never got past all those snipers... Jedi Academy did a much better job of easing you into its difficulty. I miss Raven so much... And I would absolutely kill for another Jedi Knight game; in my opinion, the best Jedi and lightsaber combat games out there.

I think he intentionally "ruined" Jan's death so that her reappeance is still the surprise its supposed to be. Had he left it at, she's captured, then people who play the game after this review wouldn't be shocked that she wasn't killed cuz in the review it stated she was only captured instead. :P

Lol, i spent 10 years thinking i must have missed the proper path in level 8 and just "glitched" my way past. Than i finally replayed it and with the help of the internet realized the awkward and abstract thing i did was indeed the intended route. Also i gotta say, i haven't played a lot of starwars jedi player character games but aside from a couple quirks, the light saber dueling mechanics were pretty amazing. Combined with becoming crazy OP with force powers that game ended up being really fun.
