The art director, or whoever is responsible for how the game assets look, in normal circumstances would direct and provide feedback on designs, and if they are not good enough then they should be fixed. Square Enix is especially noticeable if one has played FFXIV. Its expansions were largely regarded as bangers, that is until Dawntrail dropped this year. I'm sure it's still mechanically fun, I haven't had a lot of time to play, but the main character is DEI defined and the plot is self-insert fanfiction quality. Granted, the stakes in Endwalker were about as high as they could get, it was inevitably gonna be tough to follow that up, but Square Enix could've done it. Ubisoft truly is the maker of the sloppiest of games. I cry knowing i'll never get for honor 2.... say what you want bout the game now, but goddamn they really did try doing their best within those first 3 years of its release. Jam packed with content, stayed authentic for so long throughout each seasonal release, and used slight cultural mythology within the character designs and their armor sets. The sheer multitude of customization and variation for each hero made everyone's character look completely unique and reflective of the person using them. (full black edgy cockroach orochi mains are the lowest of the low subhuman tho). For Honor and R6 siege within their early lifetime are so similar it hurts to see their downfall.

They've adopted a kind of "survival of the fittest" mentality with the companies they support. This saves them money and optimises results, and also allows them to pretend the free market is actually working and closing down some studios. The only weakness from their perspective is the thin possibility of a company going rogue and deciding they want to survive instead of going down with the ship, but the C-suite all get parachuted into other cushy jobs to minimise the risk. The only people who suffer are the workers, who are mostly terrible. I just feel bad for the few good guys in the industry, but if they aren't already indie or out entirely, they're never going to learn.

The problem with this game is that it's bad. As in, it's made bad by people who don't have talent. There's a strange thing with mainstream youtube "reviewers" who constantly blame this shit on corpos, lack of time, funding etc. etc. but its not just that. It's a factor, but it's not the main reason and most are terrified of the feedback if they say the truth. The people that make these games are genuinely incompetent. No talent, no vision, no idea. Just slop made by committee in a sanitized "modern" office environment. There's a fundamental lack of design philosophy, character writing, mechanics, level design etc. You name it, they just don't know it. Even worse, they are so up their own behinds that they won't ever admit theres a lack of understanding on their part. It all leads to a spiral where nothing ever improves and every AAA release gets worse. Ubisoft is a perfect example. It's not like every Corpo CEO suit is standing behind the game designers telling them how to make/program/design the game. They don't give a shit about that as long as it sells. This game oozes incompetence at every turn and it deserves to be ignored. Don't spend your money. There's PS2 era licenced movie games that play better than this.

You can see it in anything tech related whether it's in IT/Media/Dev and of course games. This is where I think corpos are responsible. Since they're not on the ground they think that as long as the cost is lower the quality will be same. This is obviously not true so companies cut internal resources and send work overseas which comes back with highly questionable and variable quality. They then don't have the in-house talent to point it out or fix it and rinse repeat. Outsourcing in itself can be helpful if you are careful with it in small quantities and send your project to people who have the skills and abilities to help. That requires competence which Western game devs don't have or are not willing to stand up to their bosses. Or just don't care. Probably the last one tbh. Stephens is an interesting one because he tries to walk the fine line. He's obviously a shill for big publishers but knows that if he does it too much (e.g Gman) the audience will notice. It's why he spends minutes talking about non-disclosures, his previous promotions etc. He's scared people will notice. His review makes no sense, anyway. His big focus was that you have the minigame where you feed the rat thing? Oh wow so amazing, such cuteness. Same thing with hyping up the story. It's all there to try and hide the game's shortcomings while saying ultimately "It was fun." Unfortunately, the game is so bad he has to address its flaws but even then he missed out the majority of them or made it seem like it shouldn't be a deal breaker. Complete damage control. His type are the worst because they try and subvert what is obviously in front of the consumer's eyes.

I don't entirely agree. First off, who is HIRING these people? The suits. Second, who is creating the checklists they must follow? The suits. Third, who is setting the breakneck pace they are expected to work at, not giving them the time to plan everything out adequately? The suits. I'm not saying the devs are all super competent and amazing, but surely quite a few of them are just young people who love video games and want to make video games, but are having their passion and joy squeezed out of them from above. Same with movies; you stop to look at some of the costumes and effects, some of the behind-the-scenes footage, and you can see how much work those guys are putting into modern slop, that's all wasted by terrible writing, direction, editing, and multiple reshoots. Let's not forget that video games are a young medium compared to every other form of entertainment out there so the moment it was sniffed out as something with big potential corpos jumped on it like no tomorrow. I've worked in the environment and I can agree that suits that know nothing about how an industry works can absolutely ruin it. Bad leadership will always be at the core of things and looking at big publishers, its astonishing how much failure can be allowed from the top down. I would imagine a lot of financials are hidden and obfuscated over the years so you end up with millions down the gutter and bad products. Where I would push back on your reply is twofold. Firstly, if we look at it from the most basic customer point of view: The audience should not give a single crap about why something turned out bad internally. Hobby industries get a pass in this because of the pure passion but at the end of the day these companies want my hard earned money. They need to deliver a product/service that's worth it. We have a good benchmark for what is good so when the standard isn't isn't met most people don't care and just move on. You're not these developers and publisher's friend or family. You pay them and they deliver. It's simple as that. We see it time and time again all over triple A games. Now, I do however understand that on the flip side people do get attached. No suit and I mean no suit made the developers have tons of glitches in this game. Or the horrible animations. Or the awful story. This is down to the creatives. The fact is that we know what makes a good game. This just isn't it. I agree that there are probably perfectly good talent that worked on this to desperately get it to work but it still turned out the way it did. Even if you fix the glitches, make the animations bearable and eventually mod the game to the point where it's at its best, it will still be a sub-part experience. The core isn't worth saving. There's better open world games, there's better Ubisoft formula games and there's better Star Wars games. So what's the point of this? Why even bother? While I agree that yes, there will be young talent that will unfairly suffer because of this, there's just as much bad faith and incompetence. It's all a crying shame man, I just want games to be the best they can be. One final point on the hiring. It's not so much the suits. It's HR and automated recruiting systems. Both are horrible and both don't know anything about what to look for in candidates. The horror stories of corporate recruitment are the worst.

I don't know what it is but it seems like Disney wants aliens to look very human. Twi'leks didn't used to have such uncanny super normal looking human faces. I'm sure the original trilogy at least put stuff to change the head shape or some makeup to give that illusion. At this point even if Lucas bought back Star Wars and retconned everything and tried to make his own sequels I doubt even that would be enough to fix the damage that Disney has done to the franchise. Its just over, its dead. His legacy, his lifetime of accomplishments are meaningless. At this point there is more cringe than there ever was anything good.

meh. star wars was never that good. Its a product of the era it was made in. When George tries to reboot the franchise with the prequels, there only real appeal was the visual spectacle. Which now is in no short supply.
