Star Wars: Republic Commando is a tactical first-person shooter video game, set in the Star Wars universe, released in 2005. It was developed and published by LucasArts for the Xbox, Microsoft Windows, and Mobile phone platforms (the latter under the name Star Wars Republic Commando: Order 66). The game uses Epic Games' Unreal Engine. As of April 19, 2007, this game is forward compatible for the Xbox 360 with a downloadable patch.
The game features some gameplay elements that resemble features in other first-person shooters, including Metroid Prime (series)|. The heads-up display (HUD) in the game resembles the Metroid Prime helmet display and the player sees the world through a visor. The usage of health and recharging shields, as well as the general combat gameplay, resemble styles seen in Star Wars Battlefront 2.
The squadmate order system allows the player general tactical control over the three NPC squadmates that round out the four-man commando team. The order system resembles a simplified version of the context-based command menus seen in Star Wars Battlefront 1. Many objects in the game environment will highlight when the crosshair is placed over them. The player can then press the use key to issue an order automatically associated with the object; for example, a sealed door may highlight with a synchronized team breach-and-clear command, or a computer console might give have a "slice" (computer hacking) command, while a pile of cargo boxes suitable for a cover position with good vantage may provide a "take up Sniper/Anti-Armor position" command. Where possible, the squadmates will usually take their preferred roles (sniper, demolitions and technical). The player can also order the squad to move to secure any position (wherever the crosshair is pointed), or perform search-and-destroy. Also, there are orders to command the squadmates to group up or spread out according to the player's discretion for the situation.
In single-player mode, the player and squadmates do not die when they run out of health, but rather are incapacitated. If the player character is downed, the player can order the squad members to attempt to revive the player or to continue with their current orders. Therefore, the game is only truly over when the player and all members of the squad are incapacitated at once or if the player is downed in a position his squadmates cannot reach (such as chasms). While reviving a downed commando restores a small amount of health, bacta charging stations are necessary to fully regain it. Republic Commando maintains a first-person perspective throughout the game, presenting the story from the eyes of Delta 38. Mission information is received via radio commands from a Clone officer (referred to as "Advisor"), and a text-based objective list with a pop-up objective tracker arrow that points the player to the next objective.

+Sev Yup, i'm convinced that he was indeed playing a different game. I myself find the shooting incredible (i like Halo's shooting mechanic so maybe that was why) . And whatever i tell my squad mates to do they get it done fast. Some enemies suck tho, like the fly-n-spay bug and the robot that can kill you in 2 hits.

There were some parts for me on hard mode where the next room had 2 super battle droids and I went through the door realizing that my squad didn't follow me through because the door closed

The gunplay sucks, the enemies are bullet sponges, the levels design resembles your average corridor shooter and the squadmates serve no purpose other than to make you wait for them to open doors. I think you didn't understand the purpose of the F1-F4 squad commands... Especially F2 and F3 were a life-saver. Push while you have 3 men behind you or set up a line of defense in an area where you are in a better position than the enemy, e.g. lure out SBD's to come over to a gunship turret which one of your squad members occupied. Tactics m8.

A clone would not have the same personality as the bounty hunter because most of that would come from life experiences same with accents and thins like that. They can be unique just not when it comes to appearance or physique.

As they are clones they will have a certain amount of the same personality I'd say, but yes you are right on how it's life experience which shapes a clone's personality. Sure there are those that barely changes until the day they die but said clones also don't seem to do much during their entire life other than serving the higher ups/fighting/training/what not.

Personnaly I love Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. It's a great FPS game and the combat can be really intense. Also it's in 3D unlike Star Wars: Dark Forces, and the graphics still look great today. It also has an insanely fun Multiplayer mode where you can play all sorts of characters and classes, and you have a long list of force powers. What was great about is that you could have allot of players on the field. I think it was 16 but it could have been 30 my memory is shaky on that bit. I didn't have internet when I was a kid. So back when I used to play it I could fight against bots. But it was really fun because that way you can choose for yourself what kind of bots you can fight against. And that way you could do matches like "10 Jedi vs 10 Sith Lords". Or just give yourself a Green Lightsaber, and give all of the other 15 players Sith robes and a red lightsaber. And that way it's just you as a Jedi, fighting 15 Sith lords in a Deathmatch. Some people prefer it's sequel Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy. I have honestly not played enough of Jedi Academy but I think I greatly prefer Jedi Outcast. Anyway, I highly recommend those games if you're looking for an awesome Star Wars FPS.

This is such a late response that I had to look up publication dates lol, but Battlefront II (the original, not the EA/Dice monstrosity) is great as a single player, it's ofc better as multiplayer but still quite playable solo (especially as your trooper gets stronger the more he kills, ending up quite stronger than the Commando folks). At various points you can take over a Jedi hero for a various battle... but once it comes into Revenge of the Sith territory, the jedi you take over is Anakin running around slaughtering younglings in the temple, then proper Darth Vader later on as the campaign continues into Empire era.

The Solution for the AI is F2: the command to your Squad follows you Closely, Shoot at Everything that shoots around you and They don't leave you alone, Unless they Bug or something.

Actually there IS lightsaber in the game, on REPUBLIC ship level ( it's not Federation the Federation one arrives to attack you later ). I can remember Boss's comment on it, it was awesome: 'What's this? An antiquated weapon for more civilized times. Well guess what - times changed.'

I think your problem is that you wasted too much standard ammo on the heavy guys. When the best way of defeating them is either with the grenade launcher or the electric grenades(which are actually pretty common). Also you should have used the melee attack a lot more often since it kills most of the weaker enemies in one shot. That's the way I always played it and it's always been pretty fun for me. :)

DeltaHunterL I used the launcher when I had the ammo, but come on dude there's times when there's two of the battle droid spawners and there might be 5 or 6 of them at one time. They're just bullet sponges.

I love this game so much. The faster way to kill a super battle droid is to go behind him and stab him, same with Geonosians. I know you have to empty a whole blaster mag for one enemy but overall the game is literally 9/10.

I adore this game. I LOVE this game. I think it's the best Star Wars game of all time (though FU 2 and BF2 are close contenders) But I 100% AGREE with you. It's a fun game no doubt, but it sure ain't all that good. The squad's AI is pretty crummy for the standards of today's games, and it hasn't aged all that well in terms of presentation. I give this game a 7/10. It's awesome, but it has potential to be waaaaaaaay better than it is.

7:08 - YES! THANK YOU! I felt the exact same way. I only bought this game because everyone and their grandmother was saying how amazing it was. Then I played it and wondered if everyone was insane or if I did something wrong. Bullet sponge enemies, enemies that shoot through walls, grenades that bounce off of nothing, enemies with guns that one-shot you but suck when you get them, etc, etc. Then the ai. My god. I lost track of how many times I'd get a downed squad mate because they literally stood on a grenade or something and then immediately lost the other two because they would run out to try and revive the others. And NO my commands did not change this behavior. Half the time they ignored every command I gave them. All this and the Steam reviews are still overwhelmingly positive. -_-

I recently played republic commando again since I saw it on steam. And I have to say I have a few qualms with what you had to say. First and foremost the AI and their function. If you plan accordingly you can easily establish positions for your squad mates its ayt. There are many scenarios in the game where assigning squad mates to cover can not be a viable solution. Sometimes you have to stack together or be in a defensive position. This of course is done by using the formation prompts in the game. I can admit there are scenes and areas where the squad mates can get a little scatter brained, but if you constantly tag targets and position yourself accordingly these events are very few and far in between A very prominent example you show in your video is the Genosian mission bridge scene with the elites. To a first timer who is getting accustomed to the squad system it is not a very easy section. The problem here was that you forgot to stack up with your squad and kill the Genosian before setting up. After killing the first guy you can assume position, plant the explosives and pass through to the next stage easily. Form what I saw you just planted sev at the sniper position and hoped for the better, which in my honest opinion devalues your opinions on the squad AI when based on the clips shown, you don't orchestrate them properly. This is not to say that the AI is perfect and flawless, but you make it seem that the AI function brings the game down, when based on what you have showed to me is consequences of mis positioning of your squad mates. You also mention bullet spongy enemies wut? The enemies are extremely easy to take down even at the hardest difficulty setting. If you combo your weapons + grenades at heavier enemies you can kill them extremely fast. For example for S Battle Droids I found myself combing Shocks with the sniper at crit spots or even Explosives w/ Sniper or Rifle. The Geno. Elites cna be killed easily with a well placed sniper shot and as for the Q-Tip guys, well you got me there but I mean you can stun them or blow them to smithereens if you got explosives or anti armor on you. This is also considering that you focus fire. Once again in your clips, you focus fire Super battle droids that are almost fully armored. Does the game have problems? Yes the Ai can be buggy, but it nowhere near as problematic as you mention in your review. RC AI is some of the best I have ever seen. Has it aged? Yes, but what it delivers the amount of decisions and tactics you can perform in each level is more in depth than any other game I have played. You get some stuff dead on but other times I have to question it.

Soo..I grow up playing this game more than I can count... Like to a point where I memorized almost all the missions and locations, like u know if you shoot the b1 battle droid head off or Mille it it starts shooting randomly everywhere before dying? Or when You first find the BlasTech LJ-50 Concussion Rifle, if you shoot the guy that’s carrying it you get a full mag gun ((and melee with that gun will shock any thing, expect for grievous bodyguards)) And throw all that time, I never had problems with my squad, I have no idea what this guys talking about, but not ever have I had to check up on my squad or order them to heal them selfs, they usually just do it them selfs unless I give them an order to take positions or something, even than I sometimes saw they prioritized healing over my command, so...idk what version you played but, I guess mine was completely different lol

you made a mistake, most, if not all, of the stormtroopers are enlisted humans an not clones. during episode 4,5 and 6 most clones died of old age because they age faster than normal humans. only a few clones groups remained during the movies.

Except that in the Republic most bridge crew and other staff are also clones, and you can see that, while in the original trilogy they are all different. There's also the fact that Luke and Han's plan to disguise as Stormtroopers works, despite them being very different heights which would not work had all the forces been clones. As well as you know, Luke talking about wanting to go to the Imperial Academy.

In Battlefront 2 (the original/real one) during the campaign once you go through the Revenge of the Sith chapters and get into the Empire Era, the switch is quite good, and they added a lot of lore (which was later taken up by the comics and novels) on how the Kaminoans rebelled against the new Empire and had to be put down, after which the Empire's commanders wanted to diversify a bit and enlisted regular humans as well to join, while they weren't as good as the original troopers they were also less 'droid-like' than the clones often could be. The aging stuff was added in the Republic Commando novels IIRC, and didn't apply across board, in the old pre-Disney lore there were clone troopers around 20-30 years after Return of the Jedi even, some not having been giving the quick-aging gene to begin with, others having had it cured.

Yeah, that's a lie. You don't need to tell your squad to heal. If you stand near a bacta station, they'll heal themselves. They aren't stupid, they just prioritize staying near you. If you want them to prioritize healing rather than staying in formation, you give them the order. I really don't find the allies as stupid as the review seems to think, but there are moments when they do kinda stand out in the open instead of finding cover. I do have to say though, these are some of the smartest allies l've ever had in a FPS game.

+CyborgSoup As you said, the clones are just clones. So they develop their accent according to who raises/teaches/trains them. It isn't outlandish to think someone (or some people) with an American accent (or any accent) taught a specific group of clones, and they picked up that accent naturally. In turn, some of those clones went on to become a part of Delta Squad.

Wow, a review I actually disagree with from you. This game to me is still amazing. It's aged considerably well to me considering it's over a decade old. This game has more story than most shooters out today and genuinely gets you attached to your teammates. It's the one thing that really kind of smooths out the clone wars for me and makes it look more mature and fitting for the Star Wars universe. I didn't hate the clone wars, in fact I liked it, I liked the concept. It just wasn't carried out as well as it could of have been. I never really experienced the derping out of my squadmates like you have very often. In fact I've only really lost one squadmate on Kashykk because he got stuck on a crate. Hahaha. Although that's extremely tame compared to the Witcher 3 which is a 2015 game where my horse constantly gets stuck and even flies sometimes. Then again it is an expansive RPG and expansive RPGs have bugs. Haha. Overall I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys Star Wars or even just science fiction in general. It has really unique weapons and a story that I honestly haven't seen done ever since then and its dirt cheap on Steam. It also has one of the most amazing theme songs in the Star Wars universe in my opinion. The composer of the game wrote a song in Mandalorian which the commandos sung. It's short, but even to this day I still listen to that song. The music as a whole is just good, very dramatic and tasteful with a big focus on orchestras and manly choirs. Haha.

Samuraislash600 On the computer side yeah. As far as I know, the game was never the problem. Just a product of poor timing on my part. Currently I'm playing through the demo of Destiny. It's surprisingly fun. I'm sure that won't last, but at least I didn't have to pay a thing to play it (and it seems go online without Gold). I've got Star Wars Republic Commando installed on Steam, so I might chance fate later today as I don't have a lot of games I feel like playing right now.

I don't know what on earth you are talking about,I have replayed the campaign atleast 7 times by now (3 on easy, 2 on medium and 2 on hard). My AI was fine and did not behave as you described. shooting is fine for me, (you might wanna rebind a few keys like Zoom from Z to LMB but that't no problem) just git gud at aiming. (headshots are key) and finally you are approaching combat in the wrong way, you should stay behind cover (unless they are B1 battledroids, then you can just knife them all). and here are a couple of tips: B2 SBDs should can be easily taken out by tossing EMPs and concentrating fire on them (EMPs good for all mechanical type of enemies) or just use the Anti Armor atttachment The heavy merc can be easily countered by keeping him blinded with flashbangs and shooting his head, down with 3-2 shots and use flashbangs vs biological enemies to then quickly knock them down with some melee (flashbang only nessesary if they to many for you to take out at once) if your AI is flipping out, get it organised by concentrating fire. use sniper,grenade, anti-armor and etc. positions whenever possible, they weren't put there for nothing. finally, use melee vs light targets, easy kill when you've got them paralysed by flashbangs or EMPs.

I played this properly for the first time in 2017 and absolutely enjoy it. I never had any problems with the AI that you mention, but I do agree on the bullet sponge enemies, they do get a little annoying (especially on kashyyyk where the environments and battles tend to be either a hanger or a hallway).

I love your reviews, you're entertaining to listen to and informative in most cases, but there were so many things wrong here, you must've been playing a different game cuz playing this game over and over i never saw these flaws, quite the opposite even. Reflecting back on it my squadmates did much better than i, and the gunplay was satisfying and fun to toy with.

This was a really good review, though I don't agree with all of the opinion of the AI (I agree on some aspects), I do agree with everything else. Though I find the characters more memorable purely because they mean something to you in terms of gameplay. Think something like Ace Combat Zero, where you remember Solo Wing Pixy because of the skills he brings to the team. That's how I see 07, 62, and 40, an asset to the game that makes them all the more memorable.

I think the reception for this game just comes down to how new and charming it was. It felt like it had more personality than stuff like battlefront, I remember reading all the Republic Commando books which featured Delta Squad and another team of Commandos pretty intensively, though I think I dropped out when it came to Order 66.

I remember playing this back in 2005 on Xbox. I must have played it every year for nearly a decade before it was lost. I agree with you, it could use a sequel (most likely using places from the Delta squad novels). but it definitely shows its age in a lot of spots. a few enemy types, wonky cross hairs, squad AI not always working and some repetition here and there.

+jaws No, he's wrong about that. The new Rebels series makes that clear; the clones were "old" after a few decades and retired in favor of the stormtroopers, who were just normal recruits from Imperial planets.

Before Disney bought Star Wars, though, it was implied that there were batches of clones made from different people to supplement the Empire until it started recruiting people. They had some bad batches of clones, so they cloned other people then started recruiting people. Apparently Vader's Fist, the 501st was the only pure Fett Clone legion.

All clones became storm-troopers, but the 'factories' that made the clones were shut down, so as the clones were killed they started to recruit normal humans into the empire instead. For example: I have a bag of skittles, and for each skittle I eat, i replace it with a smartie. Skittles = Clones, Smarties = normal humans.

7:20 , yes you are playing the game wrong i can tell by just watching these bits of game play, you almost never melee, the basic melee attack was extremely effective(not to mention satisfying) against all enemy types and what i usually used to chop up super battle droid, also you rarely use your iron sights, you ding the game for having a large aiming circle but your the one choosing not to aim

The first one was awful but I grew up with them and found the other two to be okay. But people seem to forget the originals weren't that amazing. The films are fun and much better than the newer ones but I still liked em.

Two things that can make your play-through much better: -Never use the ADS (aim down sight) for weapons without scopes, because it's downright horrible. The weapons are accurate enough using the hip-fire accuracy and crosshair. -Never use the F# (F1, F2, etc) commands for the squad members, because some of the commands are useless, buggy, broken and stupid, and makes the squad mates stuck or left behind. These two things alone can be a game changer. The Squad members' AIs are actually pretty good, especially in close quarters with their unique CQC animations. :P The thing, that I think, that makes people love this game is the charm and charisma that it has. Excellent dialogues, excellent level design and pacing (there is something new in every single level), cool variety of weapons, cool variety of enemies, fantastic sound quality and production value, etc.

The squad will automatically heal if you're near a bacta station, no commands necessary. I will agree that the game is short, and the AI is not always the best. Also the mouse behaves in the most hyper-accelerated manner in the menu/

Also I have no idea what you're talking about when you say that there's something wrong with the crosshair. You just need to put enemy's head in the middle of the circle. That's super easy. And since there's no real recoil, it's all headshots. If anything this game is way too forgiving when it comes to aiming.

The real problem I see with this game is how squad members have unlimited ammo. At some points you're basically forces to play their nurse cause you're out of ammo, while they just pull new magazines out of their ass and keep shooting. So annoying.

Wow, I really have to disagree with you here. I personally believe RC is the best star wars game ever made, if not one of the best FPS games ever, competing with the likes of Half Life and Halo. Even on the PC version, I believe some of your issues arise with the controls. The default ones are wonky asf, and yes, some of the enemies are bullet spongey, but I don't believe I've ever had any issues with the AI, they were pretty damn smart for me, and the characterization was on point, Even better than most of the movies. It really seems like we played a different game.

The Super Battle Droids in this game are fucking awesome enemies, you have to be tactical to take them down. That's good and bad. On one hand, they're a terrific challenge. On the other hand, they will fuck you up easily... way too easy for what's supposed to be considered a clone commando with ridiculously expensive armor (100,000 credits) vs a droid that cost 3000 credits to make. in Battlefront 2 2005, if I remember correctly, one of the flaws of the SBD was that they had slightly less health than your standard droid playable character. Here, these guys are absolute tanks. They take forever to kill. And if you're playing on Hard, these guys will kill you in like 4-5 shots at full health and shields. Play the game on hard mode, die, and have your squad at full health try and take down on of these monsters without using any sniper/grenade/ordinance cover areas. There is a very good chance they will all die. Now, have them do that for two SBDs, and you are guaranteed a game over. The thing about this game is that your enemies, if they aren't using turrets or using a sniper or grenade or other unique positions that you put them in, they simply suck against the hard enemies. You are their boss, YOU have to know what to do with them. For the most part, I never had problems with their AI.

Man, I never had a single issue with the team AI, on either my Xbox and on my PC. Hell, I still feel the squad AI is some of the best I have seen in a game. My only real gripe with the game is how stupidly short it is.

I'm mixed on my reaction to this review. I agreed with the points you brought up about the gameplay but feel like it was exaggerated. This game is still fun to play and while the weapons are pretty much pea shooters when going up against anything bigger than a normal droid I still loved the combat feel. This game really nailed the whole spec ops stuff perfectly. In the movies and shows the clone troopers are kinda just there not doing anything or getting killed. This game really sold me on it's fairly serious portrayal of the elite delta squad and the fact that the clones actually do military type stuff. So yeah, gameplay is fun but too bullet spongy and the overall presentation was fantastic!

The Republic Commando books were pretty sweet aswell. Also I liked the underpowered weapons, because they gave me the feel that I had to play tactical, and that I´m not some kind of rambo. And the end hit me hard when I played it back then, because I liked the characters and didn´t see them as numbers.

I've heard the PC version has tons of issues, especially the more modern the model is. Runs awesome on XBox 1 though, about the only real plus for the system is that it runs Xbox OG & 360 games really well. For Rebublic Commando it even scales it to 16:9 natively, which is some weird voodoo magic shit that I don't understand.

I think you're playing the right game. But I'm also on the train of high praise that everyone else is. There are few, if any other, squad based shooters that are as fast paced or while offering as many options as SWRC. It also tiptoes a line between being forgiving with it's revive system that allows your squad to revive you as well, and the difficulty you mentioned of certain sections. Plus as far as shooters go, having memorable or even likable and passable AI companions is hit and miss, more often miss, but SWRC hits the mark more often than not. The flaws are there for sure, and those flaws shouldn't be ignored; however, the game makes up for it with how smooth it is and by working most of the time. It also helps that it's attached to the Star Wars brand and that as far as star wars games go, especially in the past few years, this is one that stands out in the vast sea of games both through its genre and polish.
