Yeah, there's always something the feels just slightly odd having children in a show playing with Action Figure toys from the Property the show is about... I guess it's meant to be 'Meta'? However it just seems to reinforce the artificiality of the medium... Yes, we know it's a Star Wars TV show, we don't need to see Jedi dolls, or Tie Fighter models like in Force Awakens... Rey's scavenged pilot helmet is as far as they should have gone... Although I guess human kids do play with army toys, it still juts feels weird in Sci-Fi fiction. I think I read an article recently about how many IPs have started referencing themselves, for better or worse.

@@StreetPreacherr TBH, if our world were views by aliens as a show, they'd look at kids playing with the old GI Joe and Barbie toys as us playing with action figures from the property the show (our world) is about.

In short: imitation and recycling instead of innovation. Not that Disney had much luck with innovation lately. So maybe just rehashing/remixing the classics and sticking to proven stories is the smart move here. Not that this worked particularly well with their Star Wars movies either. But then again, there's also Andor, which is probably the most original and interesting Star Wars show Disney ever made. Goddammit, if they only had stuck to the "Lone wolf and cub in space Western" formula with the Mandalorian and never made The Book of Boba Fett! Oh well, guess Star Wars now is just a skin suit for remakes and children's entertainment now.

Interestingly I didnt have an issue with the home planet being suburban earth like. One thing about Star Wars and children is emphasizing strangeness. If the 'home' they came from was interesting and strange to us, then by contrast, the place they explore would not be as interesting and strange. Especially trying to view it through the eyes of the young characters in the story. By making their home familiar to us, then it makes the strange even stranger, especially to our intrepid adventurers. This would help child audiences immensely in their immersion. Second, I have read that the originality is low, and that its a sort of 'kit bash' of different tropes (Treasure island, peter pan, goonies, lost in space, etc) well, all those stories have timeless elements to them. If any story is put together with these elements, it's going to be recognized in different works. This is another great one for children. When I was a wee lad, I loved the heck out of 'The Black Hole' 1979. Watching it as an adult brings on waves of body shaking cringe. But it certainly inspired my young brain! With great caution, I tread into the next episodes.

Hmm, I've certainly been hearing good things about the first two episodes (not the third though). So, your greenlighting based on the first episode alone, is very fair. Hits the 80's nostalgia very well, like Stranger Things did at first. It just doesn't need to be set in the (Disney, bleh) Star Wars universe. It would easily fit on some generic 'future' Earth and space.

I hear over and over "Gonnies in Space" and "Goonies but Star Wars". Which is like chocolate and peanut butter. But if there's no relationship between the characters, that falls short. The OG (I'm reclaiming"OG" for "Original Gonnies". Fight me.) had the fun and charming opening where the 5 main characters (the four friends and Thanos) were established and the motivng conflict of the plot was established. If the writers can't do in an hour what Donner did in 10 minutes, screw them. They don't get my time.

In my, likely minority, opinion, the first two episodes were solid. I reject the idea that it’s a “kid’s show”, because frankly the content is nominal to what Star Wars was in its inception (it’s a story for everyone, including children). It won’t win over those who’ve been jaded by Disney’s apathy (nor do I feel it should). But, if you have any hope with the Star Wars franchise, Skeleton Crew is promising.

Cool show for kids. Especially kids from those of us that were/ are gramps in seeing the originals in the theaters back when. I look at it like the Goonies in the modern age. Not, I woud imagine, a breakthrough for us adults of us that were fans of the original movies. But as I was older enough that I thought that the Goonies was too childish back when. I can't help but take in that it did in fact grow a generation to love that adventure. So, I'll give the one pass on that beit not for us older gen people, but more for the kids kind of thing, yeah a 9/10. That in mind I'll give the thumbs up. But what then for us adults? What then does this do for the rest of us that are not 12 anymore?

If Lucas Film really wanted that 1970/80s kids on bikes adventure they needed to have more grit. I can see by the trailer, and stills that the show is to clean. The working/middle class home life is fine. But it needs to take a cue from films like ET, Goonies, and teh OG Star Wars. It needs to be lived in. There needs to be dirt, a little ware and tear. Those kids look like they stepped out of a back to school kids clothing catalog. Also does the show put them in danger? Not just from their goofing around unsupervised but actual danger from antagonists? Does one of the kids have a Daisy Red Rider stun blaster? For shooting tin cans and space squirrels?

Hey Chato! I think you got it pretty on the nose. I've watched the first two eps and I think it's OK, clearly a show for kids which is fine. I do ask myself if I liked purely because it was a lot better than almost all the other Disney Star Wars shows, despite it's derivative tropes. At the moment I'm invested enough to keep watching but also bracing myself with the expectation that it will eventually disappoint. Wouldn't it be a nice Christmas gift from Disney if it manages to maintain it's 75% adequate standings. Too much to hope for perhaps?

I don't watch anything on D+ anymore, but your videos are always worth watching. On the off chance you see this comment, would you consider doing a "Pilot comparison" for Firefly? Possibly comparing the relative potentials for the original pilot "Serenity" vs the studio mandated replacement "Train Job"? I'd really love to hear an exec's opinion on why a new pilot may or may not have actually been justified.

No. If I were a network executive all that would be on TV these days is that screen with the colored stripes and the channel name. The only current shows I've watched in recent years were Wednesday and Fallout. Fortunately, Farscape KZbin channel is streaming episodes for their 25th anniversary.

I still think you need to adjust your criteria of the reset. That is for a TV series where DPlus does mini-series. So, no reset or home base, but a continuing story.

I expect it will be fairly bland but not too bad. The question will be character development - if the characters can develop past initial trope positionings.

I watched one and two and somewhat enjoyed it. It looks like a movie chopped up into episodes. I'll watch a few more to see where this goes. But one lecture on female empowerment from Fern and I'm out. She can be bossy but the show must treat her as a young teen in an adult world. Her mother's character shows promise. But again, gravity had better apply to her too.

Not an Ortolan? I suppose this kid would be rather large for one of their juveniles but you should never be surprised if Star Wars fans see blue rlephant and think it's an Ortolan. Knowing somewhat obscure aliens soecies names is kind of our thing.
