The "Goonies" idea was a way to obfuscate "stealing a story"...Disney/Star Wars likely thought using "Goonies" as a cover would be an easy selling point while in reality they stole the idea from Star Trek Prodigy (a wholly different franchise that had successes streaming). IF I was Paramount, I'd do a behind-the-scenes negotiation with Disney about it and if the Disney/Star Wars execs didn't agree to it, I would take them to court (each person by name that had anything to do with scripting, directing, executive producing, etc.), as that would halt any showing of the show and stall Disney/Star Wars and could impact the theme parks as well considering I'd even ask for an audit of all Disney things that could have been 'stolen ideas' that might still be under copyright not just to Paramount, but to other industry productions (Discovery+/DC, CBS, etc.). This is how the "House of Mouse" gets taken down.

Also the idea is a LOT older than Prodigy, Space Cases did it DECADES ago... and arguably better than Prodigy.

So what’s new TOS ripped off Forbidden Planet, DS9 ripped of B5, The Orville ripped off Next Gen The original Battlestar Galatica ripped of Star Wars on the list goes on and on and on!

You could also argue that they took inspiration from Space Cases (1996) or Blake's 7 (1978). I do think it feels a bit close to Prodigy in terms of timing, but having that sort of crew makes sense dramatically. I just wish Prodigy hadn't been cancelled! That and Strange New Worlds have been the only Star Trek I've liked since DS9!

What’s amusing is I never ended up watching Prodigy because it felt more like a Star Wars show.

i do not know, Star wars Skeleton Crew could be missing their audience. How many Kids would watching this Star Wars, that got all Star Wars 70ties Vibes washed out? Perhaps it "could" work if they found inside an captured Jedi Kid or confused Jedi or Sith Kid nearly the same Age and they befriend him or her and undergo some Adventure to bring her/him home from the Empire or turn him/she on the way into the Light Path?. Yeah, depends how they play the Jedi/Sith Kid Part out... Is this some kind of Anakin Skywalker when he was still kid as Blueprint Show? Please no Jar Jar Brings clone Also Janeway had already her Background story trough Voyager, she is also "Starfleet" or represent their ideals. Here in Skeleton Crew their Mentor is a total Fresh "Newbie"

I always thought the premier of Prodigy was far more Star Wars than Star Trek. But not in terms of imagery. Altgough that didn't seem to me very original either.
@marhawkman3032 ай бұрын
Nickelodeon made an old show called Space Cases that's the same idea. A bunch of eager young space cadets get launched into deep space in a ship they don't know how to fly... hilarity and galactic wars ensue.

I think by now there are only so many tropes to be used in these genres. Whatever generation is running Hollywood appears to be primarily focused on finances rather than media and creativity. Such a shame and I hope it begins to change. Fab well written content by the way, watched you on and off for a while and saw a post about struggling a little while back. Your content is informed and I always respect your opinions even if we disagree!

I kind of thought the same as soon as the premise was out for this, then again most everything is recycled so there is that. But yeah the Geordi visor was a tad much?😀🖖still gonna watch it.

This is in fact a rip-off. I mean hands down Star Trek Prodigy did it all first. I've seen both seasons and honestly some great writing and VA over on that series if you all haven't seen it yet please do so as a season 3 would be greatly appreciated. But yes this is a rip-off. I am indeed with you on this. I mean you have a group of kids who wind up on a starship, and of course one that is clearly not theirs but hey going to make it work and go on great adventures to escape their living situations. The difference being with Prodigy they were slaves more or less on that planet while the kids in Skeleton Crew were just looking to escape and hey they have parents so if you ask who has it rougher...the Prodigy crew of course. Anyway I've only seen episode 1 so far for Skeleton Crew and while it is a blatant rip-off I'll watch it just because it is Star Wars and I am very much a Star Wars and Star Wars and Star Trek nerd who is along for the ride but this video highlights quite a bit of similarities that Disney should be ashamed but not like Disney has had many original ideas of their own and hey Star Trek Prodigy had two seasons so maybe for Disney they are figuring if it worked for Star Trek...it is bound to work for them given yes as you mentioned the Acolyte stunk up the universe. On further reflection the Acoloyte was good...up till the massive amount of deaths of characters who had meaning, purpose, but somehow were meant to be discarded all for what exactly? I guess if you are watching Star Wars best not to get too attached to anyone.

Yeah of course it's a rip off the difference Is skeleton crew is live action where star trek prodigy is animated are the characters the same to prodigy yeah a little but at least star trek prodigy wasn't woke unlike what Disney has done with Star Wars but at least star trek prodigy was fun and entertaining

Never watched Prodigy and don't find Skeleton Crew very interesting either. I'm holding out for the new seasons of Andor and Strange New Worlds. Is it a ripoff? Dunno, but you don't see hardly anything new out of Hollywood.
@evlgenius742 ай бұрын
i think you are way off the mark. from everything ive seen about the show it feels like all the 80s "group of kids has adventure" movies. similar to goonies, ET, or adventures in babysitting. its a pretty classic trope at this point. so if anything prodigy stole the idea from legends like spielberg.

Absolutely ripoff. I had the feeling the premise looked familiar. After watching the first 3 episodes of SW-SC, having watched Prodigy before, the similarities are aplenty! If they “didn’t really” copy the show, then they are guilty for not doing their research!

You also forgotten to mention strange new worlds ripping of the episodes with the gorn from the alien 1 and 2 personally they made such a dumb story to how they evolved with the bad writing to what looks like a great show. It would of been so much better if they just ripped of the predator as that's more to how the gorn should've been done for the show. This show is let down by the bad writers and just copying from the original tos show with some of there episodes

You will know if it’s a straight rip off if they come across the deadliest threat to the universe and they only get taken to another room so they have a chance to escape instead of being assimilated I mean killed

Disney is desperate to get back the following that they lost! It doesn't surprise me that they would cheat in such a way! As long as disney never gets the right to star trek I'll be happy! But yeah what a rip off. Disney should just leave star wars alone they can't do anything right!

I agree that the "Woke" Disney has struggled with less than compelling Star Wars content lately. Hopefully, that will change. Similarly, Star Trek and Paramount have suffered from a similar mindset with much of the Star Trek series, just not as bad as Disney. There does seem to be a similar and parallel storytelling journey playing out between these two amazing franchises. It is a bit concerning, but if the content quality is there, I don't mind.
