Water but why do Star Wars fans want to see a New Hope again? Now don’t get me wrong, I fell in love with Star Wars after I saw a New Hope as a kid and this is why I have spent money over the years buying the VHS, DVD and Blu-Ray copy of those films for my collection,so that I can see them again whenever I crave that Star Wars feeling. What I do not appreciate is to go into a new Star Wars film only to find that it is a rehash or an improved version of a movie I have already seen before. This is why the new trilogy doesn’t work for me as they are just versions of the old done with a bigger budget. I respect the Prequels much more because they at least tried to do something new even if the delivery wasn’t always great.
@BabysitterSky5 жыл бұрын
@@henryonyeanusi9316 it had similar story beats but the context was different. I'd rather watch a well made familiar feeling movie than a boring slog that has a bunch of new ideas.
@waterh205 жыл бұрын
Henry Onyeanusi I disagree. The Force Awakens isn’t a carbon copy of A New Hope. It’s an homage. It borrows some elements but it isn’t the same movie in any way. There’s a desert planet and a death star, that’s pretty much it. I can’t explain to you how excited I was when it came out, I just love it. There’s a video named “It’s Okay to Like The Force Awakens” and it illustrates these points perfectly. Also, The Last Jedi, as divisive as it was, was full of new ideas. It received negative reception. The prequels were also full of new ideas. Once again, negative reception. New ideas ≠ good movie.

Truthseeker1515 It drinks heavily from A New Hope, but on steroids. Stormtroopers have menacing moments (and goofy ones later on), the villain is complex and conflicted, the fighting coreographies are much more realistic than the prequels and the use of the force has an "oomph" to it that felt great. It's Star Wars, you don't want mindblowing twists, you want to gobble down your popcorn without noticing because the film is overwhelming you with awesomeness. As Chris said, there are some problems with the movie, but I think it's a great mix between old and new and it got me pumped to see the next one.

Every respectable person on the Internet liked this movie. The amount of hate towards this film in these comments shows me four types of people 1. People who just want to complain or hate the film with no reason 2. People who think their cool by hating something popular 3. People who just jump the bandwagon of the same complaints without making an opinion for themselves 4. Respectable people who just didn't like the film (very few of these people) And before you say : "they are clouded by nostalgia" "they are Disney fanboys" "they are following the hype", these are RESPECTABLE people and critics who know what makes a good film. I'm fine with people not liking the film, but 90% of people in these comments are the first three, and there aren't any normal people who just didn't like the film with some legit problems.

+Asadmah Productions Star Wars The Force Awakens is seen as a bad film by quite a few for it's lack of originality (Having the same plot as "A New Hope"), Spoilers: The village of Tuanal is a repeat of uncle Owen and Aunt Beru's farm, there is a droid (R2D2/BB-8) who carries valuable information in which is being looked for by the Empire/First Order, Kylo Ren is a whinier version of Darth Vader (From the voice, to the suit, to the mask, etc), Snoke is a rehash of Emperor Palpatine, Snoke training Kylo Ren just like Emperor Palpatine training Darth Vader, Poe being tortured for the map to Luke Skywalker is the same as Leia being tortured for the location of the Rebel base, a person of a lower class who lives in the desert turns out to be force-strong (Rey/Luke), the Millenium Falcon is seen again and it is looked at as a below average ship by the protagonist (Rey/Luke), Han Solo has yet another debt to pay, another cantina full of Aliens, Starkiller base is the death star 3.0, the Rebels have another base in a temperate rain forest biome, Han Solo being killed by Kylo Ren (The Darth Vader wannabe) was the same as Obi Wan's death who was killed by Darth Vader (While our protagonist Rey watches from afar just like how Luke saw Darth Vader kill Obi-Wan from a distance), yet another character is put into a garbage compactor, an attack is planned against the Death Star 3.0, the attack on the Death Star 3.0 is attacked by X-Wings, the Death Star 3.0 is destroyed at the end of the film, and the villain Kylo Ren/Darth Vader escape the destruction of the base alive. Also, one plot twist is similar as well, Han Solo being Kylo Ren's father, and Darth Vader being Luke's father. Another complaint is the fast pacing, and lack of exposition. There is no explanation of what happened after Return of the Jedi, where did the first order come from, who is funding the First Order, who is the Resistance resisting if the Republic is dominant after Return of the Jedi, how did Snoke come to power after Emperor Palpatine died, Poe Dameron's lazy explanation of how he survived, how did Poe leave Jakku, and Maz Kanata not explaining how she got Luke's Lightsaber (Refusing to explain it, because the plot demands to move forward). Character development is rushed, and motives are unexplained. Why did Finn think that helping Poe is the right thing, why did Rey keep BB-8, Captain Phasma was a joke, why does Poe care so much about the old man who was killed by the First Order and why does Poe attack the First Order after the old man is killed then gets captured and starts making wise crack jokes as if he didn't see someone who was close to him die? Other things are Deus Ex Machina, predictability, etc. These are reasons why people had issues with the film, I personally thought the film was average, but I just thought these things should be cleared up.

I'm a sw hipster and this film dissapointed me. Not because of the universe, not because of the tech, not because of the lore. Because the main villain is a snivelling emo bitch who apparently is the new dark lord who can stop blaster bolts with the force but gets bested by a jive talking stormtrooper and a not even padawan learned young girl. Because, apparently, a person living on one isolated planet can just jump into the millenium falcon and know how to fly and fix it within an hour. Hell apparently you can just pilot anything cause you're a "pilot". Wtf was the falcon just doing there anyway!? A ship that championed the destruction of the second deathstar was left on a random planet to gather dust. The movie, imo, got great when Han and Chewie entered the scene..............I can't say anymore on that. Because Poe and Finn became bosom buddies after 20 mins together, very forced and unconvincing. Because there was no build up to finding out Kylos lineage and his revealing of his face at the request of a prisoner. The long silly stare Luke gave. Fuuuuck. They had all the right ingredients. They had an ok film. But what disappoints me is that it could have been a great feast and all I got was sausage and mash. I like sausage and mash but I want to be astounded now and again. I like Poe and the girl, didn't like Finn, fucking love Han, Chewie even bloody drug riddled Leia. Fuuuuuck. I suppose I just have to watch it again to hopefully get a better sense. I have just watched it and I am terribly depressed. So yeah this film did make me feel something. I just feel like a piece of my childhood is dead, I feel old, I'm going to weep in my pillow then go out in the rain at night, on my knees arms held to the heavens screaming my discontent. Sniff, RIP childhood. Please can anyone offer me any hope? Anybody?

+mrpinkroo Kylo's arm got blasted by Chewie, also the supreme commander says that his training isn't complete. Also, what did you want? A 100% clone of Darth Vader? About the Falcon being there, THERE IS AN ENTIRE FUCKING LINE THAT HAN SAYS HOW HE LOST IT. Fucking hell, did you even pay attention while watching this movie? Rey has obviously spent her entire life dealing with tech, and since the Falcon is an older ship, it could have worked. Next time stop being on your phone while watching a movie, and then proceed to bitch about it. Also RIP childhood? You still have 4 5 and 6.

+mrpinkroo Ren being a emo bitch IS THE FUKIIIING POINT OF THIS MOVIE. This guy is a caricature of the typical fan boy who want to look like is idol, in this case Darth Vader, aka the chosen one, and who of course can never be like him (that's what makes him an original, tragic and interesting character). If you want some "hope" think about the real bad guy the "supreme leader snoke" ( Ren is basically is dog). It's obvious that they are going for a deep story line with him involving Palpatine or even the old sith empire. Which can only lead to awesome shit in the next 2 movies. (except if they fuck up :p )

After seeing this movie I would give it B-. It's not a bad movie by any means, the action is good, effects are great and so on, but this really felt like a remake in disguise to me. We get a new "Death Star", we get female version of Luke, Vader-like villain, R2-D2 with face-lift (but the same mission)... and this is what bothers me about this movie, they played it safe. They did the exact same thing that the original movies did, but threw in some other charecters while bringing the old ones back to the point where they were when the original series started. Leia is again leading rebels into battle against a new force of evil, Han is back to being a smuggler and Luke replaced Yoda as this wise powerful Jedi. It's like they decided to throw away all the character changes that occurred during the original movies. Though I agree that movie shouldn't spell everything out for you there were a few things that bugged me. The Empire was defeated, Siths destroyed, so how has this new "Wannabe-Empire" risen to power? No one has noticed them building that big ass a fucking planet weapon? Why didn't The Republic attempt to destroy it before it was even build? And last but not least, did anyone care when all those Republic planets exploded into gazillion pieces? Millions if not billions of people died there, but to me it seemed that characters just looked up at the explosions and then went "Ahh, what the hell. We didn't like those people anyway."

This isn't the f**king video game industry in which most game reviews tend to usually help in a game sales (i.e IGN). Reviews in film don't work in the same way, general movie goers just go see a film and decide for themselves whether it's good or not without looking at critical scores. Second Hollywood for the most part doesn't care about the critical side when it comes to film making, all they care about is the money taken in at the box office. I mean if people are using the excuse of Disney paying people to say good things about Force Awakens then where may I ask were the positive ''paid'' reviews for their previous movies outside of Star Wars like At World's End. The third film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which had been a instant smash hit franchise with the first installment. Currently at World's End holds a 45% on Rotten Tomatoes and generally received mixed to negative reviews. Guess what? The film still made $963.4 million dollars at the box office. I'll use other examples outside of Disney. Michael Bay's Transformers movies. Nearly everyone of Bay's Transformers movies have received almost universal negative reviews from critics across the board. But nearly everyone of them as made their money back ten fold. Age of Extinction is currently the lowest rated film in the series on Rotten Tomatoes at 14%. Guess what? That film made $1.104 billion dollars back despite all the negative buzz it got. Another example the Friday the 13th franchise. Needless to say none of these films have ever been good, and everyone has been torn to utter pieces by critics. But they all still made their money back regardless. See where I'm getting at? And if your using the excuse of ''well it's because it's Star Wars'' then where pray tell was the overwhelming positive reception for the Phantom Menace? Phantom Menace received mixed reviews and for many Star Wars fans was regarded as a disappointment. Yet it made 1.027 billion dollars. Let's take a look at a Star Wars released movie outside of the Prequels. The Clone Wars animated movie is currently the lowest rated Star Wars film on Rotten Tomatoes of 18%. Made Entertainment Weekly list of top 5 worst movies of 2008. But guess the fuck what people? It made 68.3 million on a budget of 8.5 million dollars. So it's clear that critical reception did nothing to dampen it's income. Star Wars is a huge brand name that with every movie has always made it's money back regardless whether it was good or bad. Hell they could make a Star Wars movie of the Emperor sitting on his throne in his palace for two hours and it would still make it's money back. Force Awakens is a good film sorry haters, thus why it has received so many positive reviews. And even if it turned out to be a massive huge critical failure worst then even the Phantom Menace it would still make it's money back regardless just because of the brand name. Hell the Phantom Menace was re-released in 3D and despite fans knowing that's crap still made it's money back. Also I extremely doubt Disney is aware of reviewers like IHE or Chris Stuckman, Jeremy Jahns or any of the critics online enough to bother or care about paying them to say good things about this film. Everyone who has reviewed this film has reviewed it without being paid or any big studio interference.

Bane Knightfall To be fair, Sony is notorious for a scandal with fake reviews, but then again after the backlash, do people really think Sony, Disney or any other company would be that stupid enough to try that again, which would risk lawsuits being filed against them and horrible publicity that nobody would ever forget as a result?

+ArthurKnoqOut I honestly thought I was the ONLY one on the planet who walked out of Star Wars 7 and thought "MEH" haha...Even as a big Star Wars fan...owned original trilogy on VHS...TONS of toys, saw all the movie re-released in theaters, leading up to the prequels which I sadly saw in theaters...so I was BOUND to love the shit out of this movie.....MEH...barely better than the prequels. It felt like EPIC AMAZING scenes mixed in with a half-ass story that was half-written by JJ Abrams' kids because he was too busy with something else. Also some of the creature designs were SO FUCKING CORNY that it made me wonder how they even allowed something SO CLICHE to exist in a STAR WARS movie. i mean c'mon....balls with tentacles? HOW long did it take to come up with that concept? a half hour? It's one of these designs that are SO WEAK and cliche-feeling that it made me think "I FEEL like I've seen those before in other movies, yet I can't remember if I have...THAT'S WHY...because its SO STUPID that most movies (even SyFy channel) wouldn't be cheesy enough to include SUCH A DISASTER of a concept" You have NO idea how much I hated certain things from this movie and I am relieved to see many others being honest. It's either you LOVE this movie and HATE everyone who has a problem with it...or you're like me...you thought it was okay, but just annoyed by how over-hyped and ridiculous it is, considering it just rips off the first Star Wars AND other movies and just makes up a shitty episode with forced plot points to make people THINK it was an important chapter.

This movie hasn't aged well at all. Everyone was raving about it back in 2015, but in reality, it was just a so-and-so retelling of the original 1977 Star Wars. Everyone was just caught up with all the nostalgia about Star Wars being back after so long that they couldn't see past all the obvious flaws. Then The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker came out, and that pretty much sealed this film's fate forever.

I'm sure I wasn't the only one in 2015 who saw TFA for what it was: shallow, safe nothing movie. hated the humor, pacing, fan service, mystery box hiding an obvious lack of planning, etc. and then had to contend with reviews like this and shills who couldn't articulate anything more than "better than the prequels". Thankfully history has revealed the bluff.
@philmitchell91 Жыл бұрын
@@misturfixit45 Well this is what you get when all (and let's not deny it), the Star Wars fanboys crucified George Lucas for years for the prequels (saying things like he r*ped my childhood) and cheered when Disney bought Star Wars. You wanted a retro Star Wars movie, well that's what you got. No point pretending this isn't what you wanted all you hypocritical fans out there lol. And I say all this as a neutral who isn't devoted to Star Wars. Just watching self entitled Star Wars fans over the years has been hilarious.
@misturfixit45 Жыл бұрын
@@philmitchell91 Why on earth would it have to be one or the other? George Lucas made bad Star Wars movies. Disney made bad Star Wars movies. You can say whatever you want in retrospect, there was no reason to think at the time that Disney couldn't make a good SW movie. Meanwhile George Lucas' future plans were apparently going to involve microscopic characters living in midichlorians or whatever, so wouldn't say we missed out on much there. And while the prequels now have a certain novel charm, esp. compared to Ep 8 and 9, TFA is still objectively a better movie than the prequels and being retro was the least of its problems. I hope for your sake you're not really "neutral" because that's a lot of weird feelings to have about something you're not invested in.
@philmitchell91 Жыл бұрын
@@misturfixit45 Well tell that to the people who also hate Force Awakens now for being unoriginal and lazy (just look at the recent comments to this review for example). They all lapped up TFA like dogs when the movie came out in 2015 for giving them exactly what they wanted, only to turn on it years later when their low IQ brains finally comprehended that Disney was being lazy. But this is what the fans wanted. They get what they deserve, vapid rehashed corporate trash.

We've had 6 star wars films that star guys and now there's gonna be 2 that star girls and some people lose their shit. Male, female, black, white, gay who gives a shit as long as the film delivers. Was Rey OP? Yeah but does that honestly really take away from TFA? Nope. The film while having the skeletal structure of ANH is still pretty good and entertaining. Even if the new movies are C+ to you then you should be glad that they are that high when compared to the prequels
@RubioNegroZaravia9 жыл бұрын
+jefferson steelflex I don't think it's just because of the female lead. Alien(s) had a female lead and it's pretty universally adored. The Matrix had a really badass female fighter and people loved it. The problem here was that the script really beat us over the head with "I am woman, watch me roar", to the point of ridiculousness. 1) Rey doesn't just hold her own in a fight, she embarrasses Finn when he runs up to help her; he ends up shrugging and mumbling to himself while she takes care of multiple assailants on her own. 2) Right afterwards, Rey not only keeps up in the race away from the bad guys, she has to tell Finn repeatedly not to grab her hand. 3) Rey isn't just a competent tinkerer, she's the best engineer ever and 4) Han wants to offer her a job and a gun, which 5) she learns to use with deadly accuracy almost immediately. 6) She's the best pilot ever, after Poe Dameron, I guess. 7) She learns to use the force on her own, and 8) can best a fallen Jedi apprentice, who already killed several other Jedi, in a sword duel. These kind of things smack of Mary Sue-ism, tend to alienate viewers, and combined with Abrams' own admitted motivations, audiences naturally conclude that there is an agenda being pushed here. Is there more to the Rey character which might justify these apparent excesses? We'll have to wait and see, I suppose.
@Lt114699 жыл бұрын
+jefferson steelflex Addressing points 7 and 8, it takes Luke 3 films before he can use the force the way Rey can shortly after she learns there is a thing called the force, i.e jedi mind tricks etc. Doesn't seem believable at all. The ham fisted way she keeps telling us how she doesn't need a man, just comes across wrong. Couldn't they have simply shown us that she's a strong female character instead of having her constantly tell us that she is? More subtlety would have been nice. Also, it doesn't seem believable that she is the best pilot, engineer, firearms expert, and light saber wielder in the galaxy when she's been stuck on Jakku as a scavenger living alone.
@BobPantsSpongeSquare979 жыл бұрын
Lucas Taylor Yeah I agree that her force abilities were rushed but on your comment of her constantly telling us she's strong is false. Besides the part where Finn keeps on trying to hold her hand, that issue is totally absent from the rest of the movie. And even then I didn't think it was a big deal. Obviously Finn has some sort of attraction towards her and since she's been a loner her whole life, it makes since that she would want her space. Kinda like mad max who feels like they don't need help. And the whole thing with her being a good pilot out of nowhere, the same could be said about Anakin and luke. How could a little Slave kid know anything about fixing up droids and pod racers and actually getting them to work realistic. And how can Luke, a farm boy who was raised by a strict uncle be a good pilot by the end of the movie. Sure he had that little speeder but come on driving a car is probably different than a plane. And how is Luke able to take out a few stormtroopers while on the death star in a new hope with ease. You're complaints are easy to explain nitpicking except for her Rey knowing how to use the force quickly
@Lt114699 жыл бұрын
Just one other example of where she has to explicitly tell us that she doesn't need a man's help is when Han offers her the blaster, and she tells him that she doesn't need any help. Again, it's a ham fisted way of telling us she's a strong character, instead of letting her actions show us that. I didn't see any plausible explanation for her piloting and light saber skills, in addition to the inexplicable force skills with no training. The latter makes the light saber duel at the end a bit ridiculous.

The fight scenes were trash. The characters sucked ass, or rather the new version of them. And the plot was EXTREMELY cliche. The most annoying thing they could have ever done was make a movie like this and it irritates me that they did and I honestly thought that you were a better Star Wars fan to see how bad it really was. @inthefade9 жыл бұрын
+Christoph Bueno I like that he was flawed and had weaknesses, but frightening potential power. It was only that he was weak in comparison to Rey (except in one short scene), who was too good at everything; A classic Mary Sue character. But I do hope that Kylo Ren becomes more and more powerful, and I hope there is no redemption. I want him to become the most frightening villain yet in Star Wars.
@Ednet349 жыл бұрын
+inthefade totally true...i was nearly shocked, when he just stopped the laser beam shot from the blaster in the beginning, when read the mind of other people. But what i love most about him is, that he is not just a super evil character...he knows that there is even the good side of the force inside him, but he wants to be evil and dark, but he cant.....i think he makes his total decision, when he kills Han
@inthefade9 жыл бұрын
BeastGamingDE I agree that the deciding moment was when he killed Han. But anyone who thinks Kylo was bland isn't remembering Vader's role in ANH; He does NOTHING. Kylo ordered the murder of a whole village of innocents in the first scene! Never mind all of his rage, obsession with Vader, and how he fights the light inside him. That last bit is the darkest thing about him. He is an inversion of Luke, who had to fight the dark. He's just a kid, too. A petulant, power hungry kid... I thought he was by far the best character in the film, especially because there is a lot of room for him to grow in the following two episodes. He better kick Rey's ass at some point, because she has been too good at everything, so far. I find *that* bland, in a hero. Both Finn and Rey barely developed over the course of the plot; They pretty much landed on screen fully-formed as who they would be by the end of the story. At least Kylo has conflict, and we're left to be curious about how he will develop. Rey will probably be training Luke in episode 8, since she is so damn perfect at everything. Still, somehow a good movie, despite the many flaws.

Ok in my honest opinion I enjoyed this movie and I'm not really a Star Wars fan. I've enjoyed a few of the other movies, I've played a couple video games, and I did watch the clone wars tv series as a kid. The acting was great, it had great action, cool special effects, and memorable characters. True, the story is similar to a new hope, but that didn't bother me since I enjoyed the characters and the writing of this movie so much. It did have a few flaws but they didn't detract from the experience. I give this movie a 7/10. Now before I get attacked just because I said I enjoyed something doesn't make me a Fan of something. And for those who said "oh they just paid Chris to like this movie" they must've also paid me, my friends with me, and everyone in the sold out theater I was in that applauded at the end of it.

+doomplatoon That is because you are viewing Kylo the wrong way. He is not the cool, aloof villain who is super genius, has an evil plan and all powerful. Why is paying homage to A New Hope a bad thing? A New Hope is my favourite Star Wars movie. If Ep 8 pays homage to Empire Strikes Back, you bet that it's going to be the best Star Wars yet. Especially when Rian Johnson is directing and writing it.

I didn't like the movie from the first night I saw, it but putting that aside, the movie doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's the first act in a 3-act story, so people's opinions about the second and/or third act will influence how they look back on the first.

I've never seen such a biased review ever bro... this movie had more than 40 plot holes and acting sucked bigtime. no good visuals, no indepth story research and just a fan movie. just to pin point some places, han solo after two daceds looks at his most beloved falcon and says... "hey its the millenium falcon!" the acting of commander general was so over that anyone could feel that this fanboy is so exited to be in the movie and trying to do his best to be remembered forever.. lols.

+shaanmemon agreed... I felt like puking after watching the first 5 mins of this review. its like he was paid off to over dramatize his enthusiasm. I won't watch the rest. I paused it as I type this. I haven't seen the movie yet but I think I will wait for the dvd. I hear too many original fans hate it.. and I am an original fan and I hated the prequels. So I have no high hopes for this one. But as soon as he mentioned humor, I'm out. that's why Avengers Ultron sucked. Too much stupid humor. owell...

Just got through about 10% of the comments section. Screw this, I'm out. Let me say this to the people who hate TFA and bash others who like it: I absolutely despise people who don't respect others opinions. I loved The Force Awakens to the extent that it's my favourite film of 2015 and my favourite Star Wars film overall. I don't care if it's similar to A New Hope, it never put me off. Yes, TFA is flawed (what film isn't?), but I loved it. The night I went to see it was one of the best days of my life. People are welcome to not like TFA, but if you don't respect the opinions of people who enjoyed it, then it shows you are not a likeable person. If Chris loves it, he loves it. That's fine. Just don't have a go at him because he likes something you don't. OK? Rant over.

+Emil Anttila That's what I got from it. I liked the characters, I didn't mind the cliffhanger, but the self contained story of the movie was just the original Star Wars remade. So, as a setup for VIII and IX, it was good, as it's self contained movie, nothing much. Still really liked the movie, though, had a great time
@darthutah66499 жыл бұрын
+Saul Carrillo let's see. The empire attacks one of the good guys while a droid with important schematics runs off. Meanwhile........... although it does start off on a desert planet not much similarities oh wait a character who wants to go on an adventure finds the droid and escapes shortly after the empire arrives. Then there's the planet destroying weapon which demonstrates its firepower. In the last act, they all arrive at a rebel base where X wings are launched from to destroy the planet destroyer which has a particular weakness. By the way, a major character dies on said planet destroyer. Although the planet killer is ready to fire, it is blown up right at the last second.
