The whole point of that is by this time Luke has learned the truth about the Jedi. He basically knows what we saw in the prequels, how the code was completely wrong and led to the downfall of the jedi. He realized while the sith are the ones of evil, the jedi really were arrogant and were the ultimate cause of their own failure. Probably also learned that his father killed about 30 children with that thing.

Consider this people: They spent a few minutes bragging about Admiral Purple hair's accomplishments in some nameless battle that I'm sure they'll add in another movie. However, they killed off Ackbar as a nameless background character to introduce purple hair. You may not care, but Ackbar is the Admiral who led the fleet in the battle against the Death Star and successfully destroyed it. Leading to the death of the Emperor and Vader saving the Galaxy. This would have been a perfect moment to introduce him as the hero who "sacrifices himself" to save the people in TLJ.

I am sad you did not mention the dumbest plot hole of all in that Finn was able to drag Rose across that entire salt field that took over a minute for speeders to cross. He did it by himself, in the span of a couple minutes while Luke and Ben "fought" in front of the entire First Order invading army... and somehow made it back completely unnoticed.

they turned because they wouldnt reach the ram before beeing killed, yet he continues to advance alone, so all the fire can be concentrated on him, but he easily makes it. after turning around rose realized he wants to kill himself and turned again and somehow is fast enough to reach him from the side, so she even had a longer way to go. she too was not killed while approaching alone. after her crashing into him we see a wide shot, they are literally right before the walkers and you see fin run to her crashed speeder and noone kills them, they dont even get shot at. then they telepprt back to base like you said. i really really wanted to like this movie, but this shit-tier writing ripps my immersion into pieces. rose: "i suicide ran into you because you shouldnt do suicide runs!" who thought this was ok? the list of scenes that made no sense and made me shake my head are countless in this movie, i HATE movies that rip me out of the experience and make me think "this character makes no sense "

How about the fact that throughout the whole movie NOTHING meaningful happened besides Luke dying. The story didn't progress in a meaningful way, the resistance was almost wiped out in the beginning and are almost wiped out now. The characters didn't progress in any way, Rey is still a super optimistic character with no weaknesses, Finn is still a die-hard against the First Order and Poe is still a maverick who was changed to learn a lesson he already knew in the first movie. Kylo Ren is still evil and everything else was completely useless.

They don't keep people around, and they keep killing off the original cast. I don't expect that Chewy will survive the next movie at this rate. George Lucas gave Disney the scripts to 7, 8, and 9. See, that's the problem for me: Every time I think about VIII in any way, the less actual sense it makes. Like, there's the humor that doesn't really fit Star Wars, like Poe's "distraction" with Hux, why didn't the First Order send even one ship in lightspeed ahead of the convoy? Holdo's plan is basically 100% dependent on the First Order being completely moronic through the whole thing, and had Poe not taken out the Dreadnought, then it's all screwed cause they can just turn Crait base into the Crait Memorial Crater from orbit, but we're supposed to look at what Poe did as wrong. Same with the leaving behind of pilot to turn the ships around, I mean, when did auto-pilot go away completely? That shit's been around since Ep I by direct mention. Pick out any scene, anywhere in the movie, and if you think about the scene, it just falls apart immediately unless you totally blind yourself to the problems. You start to feel the weight of every "what a twist" moment, and you can see that the entire focus of the movie was that "subverting expectations" crap that's been getting slung around. It's *everywhere* in the movie. They've also made the Force too powerful for WAY too little effort. Leia's able to split second save herself in a vacuum, Rey doesn't so much get trained, in so much as just decided to be better at the Force. You also missed a Maguffin in the "Force Bridge" between her and Kylo, a plot started in VIII, and having absolutely no real purpose. Remember, this whole plot is occurring in a span of hours, not weeks or months or years like the with the originals.
@unnamedenemy9
@unnamedenemy9 4 жыл бұрын
Okay, several things. 1. humor is *really* subjective and generally very influenced by the time. So saying "this humor wouldn't work in films from 30+ years ago" is kind of meaningless. 2. what do you mean sending a ship ahead? Do you mean to the planet they didn't know the resistance was going to, or just a short range jump that we've literally never seen anyone do when it would have been useful before in any of these films? 3. Holdo's plan relied on the First Order being arrogant and eager to see the resistance over while they snuck away to a planet with an old base the First Order didn't even know existed. The whole idea is to go unnoticed while the First Order thinks they're all dead. And Poe destroying the Dreadnought is one of the stupidest moves in the movie because it gained the resistance nothing of value and cost them their entire fighter and bomber wings. Seriously, how do so few people recognize that killing that ship didn't actually help? They went from being *ludicrously* outgunned to *still* being ludicrously outgunned, but slightly less so. 4. you realize it takes time to die in vacuum, right? All she did was pull herself towards the door before she would have died and she still spent most of the film out of commission as a result of the explosion and vacuum exposure. Also, am I the only one who remembers that Luke trained with Obi Wan and with Yoda for just a few days each? Those stories didn't take place over weeks and months, they took place over a few days, otherwise the timeline with the other characters would get completely messed up. It's almost like the series never really cared about being realistic and only got into the weeds in the prequel trilogy that everybody hated. Also also, the mind bridge served a pretty clear narrative purpose in order to help the two leads create a connection. It's not like the film is without flaws, but this kind of bad criticism really bothers me, and it's so overwhelmingly common with fanboys -- usually included with bitchy whining about Luke not being badass enough or claiming that the movie hates Luke and Star Wars despite the climax and final scene clearly showing the legend of Luke and the story of Star Wars being basically the best things ever.

@@unnamedenemy9 I agree with what you're saying... except for two things 1. Poetry literally tried a "your mum" joke which, in the case of Star Wars, really doesn't fit 2. I'm not sure how long Luke trained for, but it was definitely longer than Rey, plus he was trained by two masters. In the first movie Rey takes on Kylo and some how survives without a scratch, then in the second, she trains herself, with one training session from Luke, and seems to be on the same fighting/power level (in both force and lightsaber) as a full fledged Jedi Knight
@OokamiTez
@OokamiTez 4 жыл бұрын
@@unnamedenemy9 I am gonna answer a few not all because they do not interest me. 2. Yes they had multiple ships that were hyperspace capable. They could have jumped two ships ahead the rebel fleet and pretty much stop their escape, thus making the slow chase entirely pointless. (We even see a short jump with Holdo in the movie. It is all about the maths of where to jump and from where) 3. Just on the dreadnought thing. The earlier poster stated that if they hadn't destroyed the Dreadnought the dreadnoughts main cannon could have bombarded their hiding place on the salt planet and destroyed them without first order having to land any forces on the planet itself. 4. She survived and explosion flying into the vacuum and then without any noting that she has done force training (we can think that is what happened but it would have been so easy to show it. Like her pulling a seat when sitting down or pulling a pad when she needed info. Just showing that she has force powers). Also for some reason she opene a vacuum seal door and for some reason the hall way into which she walked didn't have it's air blow out. There are real reasons it is stupid. And the biggest thing is they could have done some re-shoots so she would have died there. As sadly Carrie Fisher had died before the release of the movie (a year before If memory serves) On the end there. It is debateble how long Luke studied under Yoda, but. He had some training from Obi-Wan, he had three years prior to learn about the force on his own. And even then he might have been there even few months we are not sure. And then he got his ass handed to him by Vader. He had no chance in the fight on episode V. And by Episode six he had another year or so of study under Yoda. Rey had in total with both films at best few weeks from being a girl who didn't believe the force exists to a person who is killing the "emperors" guard like they are just civilians. The movie is just a mess and in my honest opinion the worst star wars movie I have seen. (Haven't watched Solo cause was not interested in a heist movie in star wars) Last Jedi is Anti-Star Wars movie and I think it is a really sad thing that the people who made it were given the chance.
@unnamedenemy9

@@OokamiTez 2. you seem to be basically making stuff up here, we have literally no idea how long Holdo's jump was supposed to be because she only cared about hitting Snoke's ship. 3. which was completely irrelevant to their plan because if they were found they were fucked with or without the dreadnought. The whole plan hinged on not being detected as they fled to a base the First Order didn't know existed. So killing it changed precisely nothing for them except getting their last effective means of defense destroyed along with a significant number of their already meager forces. 4. she could sense things through the force both in this film and in the Force Awakens and we already know the force was supposed to be strong in both her and Luke, how is it a stretch that she could have learned the most basic thing and just pulled herself to the door? That door that was clearly an airlock because she had to pass through another door to get to it and people saw her coming and could have prepped as she approached? Sure, that's be really fast, but that's not a real criticism. And as for the training, I looked this up and while it is unclear, at no point did Luke go back for a year of training. He had to self-teach. But yeah, Rey learned really fast and I would have preferred more actual training and the passage of time, but that doesn't mean my preference is a legitimate criticism and that the film is bad because it didn't fit my preference on that count. "Last Jedi is Anti-Star Wars movie" -- that is pure, unadulterated idiocy. You mean the movie where the mere *idea* of Luke Skywalker stops the bad guys in their track and humiliates them, the film that literally ends with a bunch of kids basically showing how great Star Wars is is "anti-Star Wars?" Are you actually high? Whatever else it is, it's a giant love letter to the originals and to the franchise!
@OokamiTez
@OokamiTez 4 жыл бұрын
@@unnamedenemy9 2. Yeah it is debatable about the Holdos jump. Although for her to crash into the ships she would have to be either just hitting light speed but before going to hyperspace or leaving the hyperspace just beneath the speed of light. But even still they could have jumped the extra star destroyers even to other systems and back to that system put in different places they wouldn't even need to get close to the rebel fleet put just around them and then encircle them. Either way the slow chance was stupid. 3. Well their other ships (the ones in the hangar) were still destroyed and the whole reason why their cloaked transport fleet could make a hidden get away to the salt planet would have worked that for some reason first order wouldn't be scanning for cloaked ships (which they could do when they heard about the plan, why wouldn't they keep doing that anyway) Also after destroying the last rebel ship I am pretty sure they would check the remains at least with longer range scanners and not finding any dead people they would know that the ship was abandoned. So the only place the rebels could be would be the only fucking planet on the way. The salt planet. So the whole fucking thing would be about trusting that first order has no idea what to do in any situation and just believe they have already won. 4. Yes she has been force sensitive put pulling your self in a vacuum a long as way is not just a basic thing. Remember how in 5th episode luke needs to concentrate like really hard just to pull his lightsabre out of the snow. Yeah he didn't have much teaching put he had for a few years done training on his own. And on the airlock I don't remember seeing one put I have seen the movie like twice because that is as much as I could stomach it. Put I think it was just the door to the bridge no airlock in place. Luke Skywalker was butchered in this movie just so Ryan Johnsson could say "Haha didn't expect that." The one thing that they give as to reasoning why Luke lost all hope (and being the New Hope it is quite a lot of bullshit already) is that one night he probed the mind of his sisters son and saw he was capable of evil and desided there and then to kill him. Even if he didn't do it this is the character who believed that his father, who was the icon of the fasist ideology of the Empire. Man who had probably killed thousands of innocents, to have some good in him still. He was ready to die because he would not kill his father. That person sees one might-be future where his sisters (and best friends) son turns evil and he is just "Okey, time to kill him." And there is no note that he had become bittered or anything like that. At that point he should have been the luke we remember. This movie is the poster child of being a Disney movie. The more PG movie with stupid marvel type humor that feels awkward and out of place. But hey if you liked the movie go on liking it no sweat of my balls.

I just realised something that slapped me in the face. If Finn and Rose could literally sneak away to another planet, using a ship that was on the main ship where everyone is. Why couldn't they all just do that? They could go to the casino with the whole rebellion or resistance and hide in the forests or highjack all the rich people ships to make their escape, because surely there's plenty of oil there for ships. In fact, Finn and Rose could have just gone for more fuel, ditch the main ship and use the means they used to get everyone to...They can actually just highjack ships at the casino planet, like the codebreaker did, and go back for everyone, since it didn't take too long to go there and get back, and just save the day. I loved the film, but no. Poe already knew her plan - that's why the casino side quest went ahead, because he thought it was doomed to fail. She had absolutely no reason to keep from him the fact that, hey, the plan would actually WORK, and keeping that information from him led directly to the casino side quest which led directly to DJ being able to betray the Resistance. The film is great, but that was a big plot hole (which would have been easily solved by having Poe find out about Holdo's plan by hacking in or from a lackey, so she couldn't explain herself).

Episode VII was Finn learning that there was more to care about and fight for than himself. Episode VIII was Finn learning that no matter where he goes, no matter what he does, there will always be those who need help. Running doesn't work. Running to help friends doesn't work if you leave more problems behind. And killing yourself to save your friends? That's a short term sollution at best. Finn's story arc is him learning to care about more than just himself. Or you can complain that Rose didn't have as much character development as the beloved Admiral Akbar... Wait, what was his story development in the films? He's an admiral... He leads a fleet... He recognizes traps... Well at least if you get into the books you can find good story and character elements for him! Except that Rose has those too, if you actually look for it. Typically I address things with reason and calm, keeping jokes and sarcasm to a minimum. Lately? I'm tired of people never even trying to understand anything beyond the tip of their own nose, never taking the time to care about anything more than their immediate comfort zone. There's a lot of love and hard work in these films, both new and old. Maybe give some credit for what's there rather than complaining about how it's not exactly what you wanted?

@@leogavitt8162 And those dumb parts are what ruin the film for me. I won't deny the film was really well shot, and overall the fight scenes were fun to watch (Luke schooling Kylo was fun, even if it was just a projection), but the glaring oversights bring it down as a whole for me. Going back to Luke vs Kylo Ren, it's kind of a huge deviation from what made Luke LUKE in the first place. I get they were trying to go in a "new direction" (and were systematically "let[ting] the past die" and killing it where they "had to"). But when that new direction betrays one of the single strongest driving forces of a character, with NO screentime showing the development to that strongest of personal chords deteriorating and finally snapping, it feels cheap. Hell, it almost felt like the writers decided "Hey, remember how Luke stared down the two most evil people in the galaxy because there was a shred of good in one of them? What if he didn't do that?" I know there are those that liked it. And good for them. But it's too drastic of a change with little buildup to it for me. It doesn't feel like the natural growth it could have been. If you'll forgive the pun, it feels forced.

I liked it for the most part, I would definitely take out the Casino scenes and replace it with some sub-plot using the Knight of Ren, and I think that would fix most of what I felt was wrong with this movie. Yes, even though Mark Hamill had trouble with Rian's portrayal of Luke, I think it was great to see that fear and other emotions can over take some of the greatest people alive. I know it's a stretch, but it reminded me of Robin Williams, one of if not the most hilarious individual who struggled with depression. We put people high on a pedestal and assume nothing can go wrong because they were able to overcome one thing that other people didn't. He went into hiding after failing to live up to his legendary status. Was the reason, accidentally thinking for a second to end Kylo's life, a little out of character? Yes. But the point is that he instantly regretted the thought it even came to his mind, but at that point the damage was done because Kylo saw the second where Luke was wanting to kill him and assumed nothing less of Luke.

Remember the beginning of Empire when Luke was taken by a Wampa? And later on, Han, Leia, Chewie and C3PO all land inside a asteroid. But the biggest one was in Return of the Jedi with Jabba's palace. Then later on, the eworks take up some time as well. All these scenes could be considered pointless to the plot. Personality I like these scenes because they take time away from the plot of the film to expand the Star Wars universe. But that's just my opinion. You can hate this movie and I would respect that. Myths & Monsters then by that same measure shouldn't Luke (the extremely powerful Jedi) be able to astral project himself without dying? Also when did it become a thing that you can use up to much of your force power? Especially considering it's in and around everything and literally binding the universe together? Rian Johnson was really obsessed with the concept of running out of fuel in this one, the ships are running out of fuel (even though in object in motion remains in motion forever in space, I guess the Voyager 1 is going to be running out of fuel any day now out there in the cosmos) Luke is running out of force fuel. And that's not to mention shouldn't Luke be able to school Rey when she decides to come at him since he's on a planet that dramatically increases his force power? And what would be the point if "training" a Jedi on such a planet? Rey would be like wow this is easy, I can do anything I want, and then leave the planet only to realize it's much more difficult anywhere else. Every time you try to explain the nonsense that is this film there will always be ten more holes opened up, because it's the definition of nonsensical. You also may want to include a line of dialogue to explain that force power is increased on this planet for the millions of people who'll be seeing the film that don't ingest every single little bit of Star Wars property such as cartoons and comics.

On the note of Rey's power, I've heard people discussing how this film addresses that, and I think it's actually pretty intriguing. Apparently the notion of "balance" is a factor here. With few Jedi and few Sith, the Force actively tries to introduce equal weight on both sides. You got someone super powerful on the Light side? You get Kylo. Oh, now the Dark Side is outweighing the Light side? We get Rey as Kylo's antithesis. The Force literally weaved her to be his equal adversary.

I'm live near enough that island and yes it is covered in puffins. It was a clever work around. And to be honest I did laugh at the porgs so them being a commercial cash grab can be forgiven.

Luke dying wasn’t about evolving. Hell if anything, his characterization destroyed whatever history he had in the OT. The same Luke who literally turned himself over to the Empire to redeem what little spark of light in Vader gives up in his own nephew who he “thinks” is turning. Not even fully committed to the dark side at that point. What a joke

to me his character arc was absolutely amazing.... problem what you have is not with the movie, its with your expectations.... did you expect them to just please everyone and write the character like you want them?.... i love they had balls to do this
@zatharos6427
@zatharos6427 6 жыл бұрын
Zoltan1251 your guess is actually incorrect. I was not expecting EU or an over powered Luke at. Just a Luke that actually follows the dame line of thinking as he did in previous movies

+Zatharos... he made one mistake and it cost him everything he build.... but whatever, the problem is that YOU expected him to not change in 30+ years.... its not problem of the movie, you just dont like it, thats okay, but its not bad movie because you dont like that character changed

There are force sensitive people but they dont need to become jedi. I think that was what they were hinting at: the force is in everything and neither side can fully comprehend it, let alone control it. (also: if snoke was the one that connected ben and rey in the first place and they still had the connection after his passing, shouldnt it mean he is in fact alive?)

There are problems but isn't this the biggest?: Force Awakens and Last Jedi all takes place in the span of what, less than one week? I mean, LJ literally picks up where FA ends, Rae holding out Luke's light saber. LJ is just an appendix to FA. They destroy that giant Death Star planet thing one day, and then basically First Order chases the Resistance for a couple of days, the Resistance escapes, Luke emerges and is gone. Rae went from finding a droid in the desert to being greater than Luke Skywalker in less than a week? What exactly got accomplished in LJ other than adding an ending to FA?

The original characters were reduced to the point of irrelevancy? Ackbar: died in an off-hand way off screen R2D2: Did nothing of consequence the whole time Chewie: Sat on an island the whole time and did nothing. C3P0: Aside from a few quips, did nothing but show his face Leia: Did nothing of consequence to affect the plot aside from NOT die. Luke: Did nothing of consequence, did't really train Rey all that much, didn't show up to his last fight personally, and then dies.
