Something else that has been pointed out in hindsight is that many of the things he is criticized for now (sexualizing most if not all female characters, ethnic stereotypes, overly violent heroes, etc.) were all present even during his glory days; it’s just that back then he still had editors and other people in charge who could rein him in

So from looking at ComicsVine, I learned a couple of things. For one, the villain's name really was "Octopus". For another, the original Octopus was a villain who could only be seen from his distinctive gloves, giving the impression of someone unknown and scary. When Frank Miller adapted the character, he wanted someone to fill those gloves, so he got Samuel L. Jackson, and told him to come up with someone as batshit scary as possible, wearing whatever he wanted at whatever time... That's right. The Octopus being as bizarre as he was came purely from Samuel L. Jackson's creative freedom of the character.

I took the Nazi scene like this: the Spirit and Octopus have been fighting for so long, Octopus has to step up his game constantly to try to rile up the Spirit. Spirit is just bored of fighting Octopus at this point. He doesn't see him as a threat since they're both immortal. Octopus killed the cat because he wanted to piss him off, and hurting an innocent would bother a goody two shoes like Spirit. Oh, and Johansson wasn't phoning it in. Her character was. She briefly mentions something that suggests she's just Octopus's employee/intern or something. She's a punch clock villain who, like Spirit, is also just going through the motions. She doesn't give two craps about Octopus's plan.
@hacktormike36796 жыл бұрын
The scene is not that hard to understand. Why is he a nazi? Why does he kill kitties?? Well, he's the *baad* guy. Is not that hard. I don't know what else do you need. Maybe not all superhero movies need to be 2 hours 45 min long

Great episode. Could you believe this movie came out the same year as other comic book movies like "Iron Man", "The Incredible Hulk", and "The Dark Knight"? Guess it was appropriate since Christmas of this year will be this movie's 10 year anniversary. I never sat through this movie, I did see trailers for it and maybe a bit of this movie, but never all the way through. And judging by the footage of this movie, it seems like the kind of movie, though looking great visually, seems to have a hard time deciding if wants to be serious and gritty like "The Dark Knight" or if it wants to be a comedy. Also, even though I've never read any of "The Spirit" comics, but I can tell this was probably not how the character was in the comic, sure he seems like a womanizer in the comic, but here it seems like Frank Miller really wanted to push that factor to extreme heights. Kinda sad that Mr.Miller went from one of the game changers of comics to just plain, bat-shit insane. Also great stuff with Frank Miller characters in the skits.

It jjust looks so good!

sfighter00 Sadly it only looked good in the marketing. Even visually it did not live up to any of the expectations. Sin City and 300 did the CGI comic look before way better, while this movie always looks kinda cheap. It’s worth a watch due to the strange nature, but it’s amazingly forgettable. So many crazy design decisions and it is still boring.
