it's amusing how old "new tech" always strived for analogies to daily real life. we got ever so minimalistic over the years as people got more used to controlling new devices. these ui designs look more like a video game now.

Interesting. Everything from long press, intertial scrolling, drag and drop had been done over a decade before Apple. This device was truly before it's time.

Notice that panning around in spaces was "backwards" from today's touchscreens: the background moves opposite to the finger direction. That may have been because the dominant scrolling method at the time Star7 was designed was based on scrollbars, where you move your finger OPPOSITE to the direction the background moves. We called it "push camera" scrolling because you think of yourself as pushing the camera viewing the scene: your finger pushes the camera to the left so the scene moves to the right, and vice-versa. (Notice also that scrolling in Star7 was inconsistent, because the scrollable wheels roll in the direction the finger moves.) After Star7 was developed, I did a user-test that showed that forwards scrolling -- which we called "push background" -- was much more intuitive and less error-prone. So later prototypes used push-background scrolling, and that is the type of scrolling now dominant on touchscreens.

By the way first touch displays were invented in 70s and exposed in 1982 in TV. So there is no question about suing somebody for "touch display". Patent wars were about "multi-touch" displays, not a single touch.

The device in the video was one of only a handful of prototypes - like literally 4 or 5 devices. The device was never manufactured. The equivalent mass produced touch-screen handheld device from that era would have been the first Palm pilot which I think came out towards the end of the Green project.
