Seems incredibly reckless to wait for Weir giving the command to lower the shield while people tend to walk through the gate pretty much immediately after the wormhole is established. This stuff should obviously be automated.

To be fair the show(s) established that the wormhole has travel time, I think they said 4 to 5 seconds? Seeing as the shows also usually show the dialing people sending their GDO code *before* running over to the gate and entering it, which gives another 4 to 5 seconds, I'd say there's be a good 10 seconds for Atlantis or the SGC to respond to the code, which they generally do. We've also seen the code be denied, and the dialing people somehow know this as they don't go through, so I'd also assume there's an automated readout on the GDOs which communicate with the base they're dialing, telling them whether the gate is open or blocked.

He starts speaking the moment his mouth comes through. So I think he began his sentence while stepping into the gate. Kinda like (Iiiiiii-*gate travel*-iii know what I need to do)
