Stark contrast between life of Ukraine refugees and other migrants in EU | DW News

International Migrants Day is marked by the United Nations to highlight the contributions migrants make and the problems they face. It's taking place in the middle of a brutally cold winter in Europe, but plunging temperatures have not put off migrants trying to cross into the European Union.
One increasingly popular point of entry is along the border between Serbia - which is not in the EU, and Hungary, which is. Around the Serbian village of Horgos, where there's a border crossing, a number of illegal migrant camps have emerged.
DW reporter Idro Seferi visited one of them recently.
Meanwhile, more than a million Ukrainians have settled in Germany since the start of the war. A new study shows many of them are integrating well and quickly. DW reporter Emily Gordine met with a young family who came to Berlin in March.

International law makes no distinction between "safe" countries. As an asylum seeker, you can claim asylum in any country, not simply the first one you set foot in.

In Australia we offer “protection visas” which have no citizenship or permanent residency opportunity - they can never become Australian, they can’t vote, get a passport, leave the country etc. We use offshore processing, where they are taken off Australain land to “safe” locations like Christmas Island. If you remove the attractions of the opportunity to make money in the big cities, and the chance of remaining for ever - they stop coming.

It is very very sad that those people live in such terrible conditions, but I think that too many people coming to countries whose culture is completely different than theirs pose a threat to our culture in the future. You never know who comes in... There are a lot of wise good people who want to adjust, but there is also a different kind of people in this world...... For example, some come although they hate us which we could see in comments, eg on YT, after the war in Ukraine started - we could see who was writing what.... That was the moment I changed my attitude. There must be a balance and well-thought strategies to prevent potentially serious problems of the future. Definitely, I wish life in those countries which so many people escape from were better and could improve fast...... We can't be prejudiced because various types of people are there everywhere, but there are things which can be predicted ;( It is so difficult. People are still just people and I think we are not ready for that yet....

Foreigners coming to europe is no problem however, those who seek to benefit without paying don't deserve to stay. If they want to live in a place like europe then build it up, a democracy, rule of law, department of justice and you are halfway done. Companies will come offering goods and services and jobs. After a while stability will be normal, just like in europe. It takes time and effort but the method is well documented. All that is needed is people willing to make it become reality and not people who flee without sacrifice

People who want to come to Europe can do so legally: there are a large number of grants & job offers; I personally know a bunch of PHD students from Iraq, Syria, Iran who are working in Budapest that way. The mob on the border is not of hard working people: they are only looking for an easy life.

The social services here in Switzerland changed some extra laws now because the population had questions when Ukrainians park their SUV to get welfare. After staying for a year, they have to sell their cars now if they have value. Also they are a bit demanding what I heard, not used to be dependant from other people. But I think that's why I like Ukrainians. Also my kids like the new Ukrainian kids in school, they seem to be well raised and educated.

I think this restriction only applies to men fit for the military. Not that it matters much inside a corruption ridden country like Ukraine. You pay a doctor and he will declare you unfit. Or you pay the border police and they will look the other way allowing you to exit the country.
