I’m bitter about SSN bc an 11 o Clock number signifies a shift in tone where things are reaching their climax. And that song is America is Great Again bc it shows how far its gone: the army is infected and its all gone to hell. It is the Show Stopping Number in the show, and sometimes those songs overlap, but this isnt that moment. I’m a bitter MT Major pray for me. (A good example of overlapping a Shows SSN and 11OC is I Know Where Ive Been from Hairspray. It denotes a significant shift but never fails to BRING DOWN RAFTERS AH. Another near qualifier would be Room Where it Happens. It COULD be both if you dont consider Hurricane the 11OC Number in the show, and it is the definition of show stopping, since when done right, applause after the number is insane) (sorry im big passionate bout theatre tropes for no reason i love ur vids they are hella fun)

11 o’clock numbers often feature a character having a realization or change of heart. As such I would argue that since SSN _is_ the 11 o’clock number because it features Hidgens (presumably uninflected) revealing/realizing that he thinks thing would be better if the aliens took over. In AIGA the army doesn’t actually change, they’re just killed and their bodies are controlled by the aliens, as such it can’t really be considered a change of heart in the same way that Hidgen’s betrayal is. Additional I think AIGA isn’t a *big* enough number to qualify

also there are different recognized definitions of what an 11 o’clock number is. so yes there is what you’re describing in which there is a tonal shift and characters change but there’s also the sort of “original” 11 o’clock number that was normally a big and showy ensemble number that didn’t really affect the plot but it was show stopping and left theater goers humming whatever the song was. SSN does a good job of being that version of an 11 o’clock number, with a few adjustments, while still affecting the plot.

I think No Way is a little high. Many of the songs right below it (Speed-Run, Everything Ends, One in A Million, and Voldemort is Going Down) are both: A: Better 11 o'clock numbers. They both achieve the purpose of an 11 o'clock number, while having that more grandiose feeling that 11 o'clock numbers should have. No Way is kind of lacking there. It's higher than the ones that weren't mentioned that are lower then it (Big T's Temptation, American Way, Beauty, and Together), but it's not as good as the aforementioned Speed-Run, Everything Ends, one in A Million, and Voldemort is Going Down. B: (this one is my personal opinion, disagree all you want). I think they're better songs. I just find them more satisfying to listen to then No Way.
