The film did a poor job satirizing. It presents an actual deadly enemy fighting us, not Nazis killing innocents. It presents a society without poverty, disease, racism, sexism, etc. The media is on the front lines streaming live, not editing footage at Government behest. Military commanders are held accountable for mistakes that cost lives. The Mormons were cautioned, not stopped. The military is voluntary. One single teacher is shown to promote Military Service in school. We see in real time that the bug meteor is traced to Klendathu system, not a false flag. Of course the source material is alluding to the Western societies fighting against Communism. A satire on that would have worked much better since that's what is there to work with.

This was a subliminal satire.

You completely misunderstand this movie. Imagine you’re in the future, and the society in the movie is the one in which you exist. Now imagine that society made a propaganda movie about itself to show to its people. This is that movie. It’s designed to look like a propaganda film made by fascists - that’s the whole point. By the end of the film Johnny Rico has been reborn from a dumb jock into the perfect soldier. Every line he says in the last scene is a regurgitation of something he’s heard before. Heck, the movie ends with them showing each of the main characters in their jobs as if it’s a recruitment video “this could be you.” It even ends with the line “they’ll keep fighting, will you?” The director openly admits that he studied Triumph of the Will, the notorious Hitler propaganda film, to get ideas for how to shoot this. It’s a story in two levels, in the top it’s about a bunch of sexy teens who are friends forever and go off to kill some bugs. Underneath it’s a parable about fascism and what a society would look like if everything about it is martial and geared towards war. There are SO MANY things that point to this. Look at how literally every adult they interact with who has gone through military service is horribly maimed - civics teacher missing an arm, science lab teacher is blinded, the guy who says “mobile infantry made me the man I am today” is a triple amputee. THATS the sort of not-subtle-at-all hints that are constantly being thrown at the viewer to make them say “wow this is fucked up.” The woman in the shower who casually mentions she’s a soldier so she can get a license to have kids, another prime example of dropping hints about how “everything isn fucked.”
