I’m not surprised. Evinrude is the only name in outboards, glad we got to see it. I love these sorts of videos. Every Spring, first trip of the season, I dumps the boat off the trailer and float away from the jetty and start the engine, Yamaha people always wish it doesn’t start I’ll bet! But she always does. I’m never buying anything else. Ever.

Nice boat and motor! Not surprised, my Grandad told me always run it out of gas when finished. Love my old 76 and 86 Evinrudes and do this everytime. New impeller, spark plugs and lube then back in the water, enjoy!

That gives me some encouragement for my 1988 Evinrude 25HP, which hasn't been started in ~5years. I got some new non-ethanol gas, a new battery but so far it wouldn't pull start. It sputterd for about half a second one time. New plugs, pistons move freely. I'm going to try it with the new battery..

That's what your get when you take care of your engines. I have an old 1973 (I think) 70 horsepower Evinrude and she starts first try, no matter what the weather. One time I had just turned the key while anchored 10 feet off the bank to test start in 37 degree weather. Cranked for a second then fired right up. Meanwhile a guy with a Mercury 150 couldn't even get his cranking.

You didn't say and you may have done it, but I would have pulled each spark plugs and shot some oil in each cylinder and rotated the fly wheel before the first start, but that's just me since it has been 17 years sleeping. Motor sounded pretty good after a 17 year nap.

Johnson/Evinrude (OMC) has always been my choice. I've got a 1990 4hp Johnson, 1969 6hp Johnson, and a 15hp Evinrude and they all run great. Taken proper care of, they'll probably outlive the owner.

We had an old 1972 model 55hp Evinrude twin on a 15 foot fibreglass runabout that was left out in the weather for God knows how long..The hull was rotted and destined for the tip..In a last effort to see if the motor was any good..i connected a good battery to it changed fuel lines cleaned out the fuel tank and put some fresh 50 to 1 mix..and it started on the 3rd attempt as well..We kept this motor..Amazing Evinrude motors both time and the elements cant even kill them..

Bullshit, I had a brand new 86 Evinrude 225 was a beast till the engine threw a rod because the robots forgot to tighten down the rod bolts to specs and that's when they went down hill. Evinrude &Johnson were good back in the 70's early 80's, then they went to shit, why do you think they call those engines ocean burners, You can't beat a Yamaha or Suzuki today.

In the future NEVER use 4 cycle starting fluid in a 2 stroke. Probably didn't hurt it this one time, but it strips oil off the crank and really shortens it's life span.

If everyone with an outboard ran the motor out of gas before pulling the boat boat mechanics would have a lot less work to do. Gas turns into varnish after sitting too long. Makes a mess that’s easily avoidable.

Daniel Lockwood actually, water comes from hose and since it's under pressure, it will circulate in motor even w/o impeller. I would be pretty concerned about 17 y old rubber impeller...
@daniellockwood291
@daniellockwood291 7 жыл бұрын
neppisskaba if it was me I would change it also I just said that because my merc only pumps a strong stream out of the tell tale when the engine is running, the hose only has a little pressure that it pumps through the engine when it's off

Hey how much choke do you give it? And if it doesn't crank over, do you re choke? Or would that flood your engine?
@billysexton
@billysexton 7 жыл бұрын
If the motor is cold I push in on the key for choke and start while the key is pushed in. Typically it will start but if not I will choke each time if it's cold.

These motors dont use a choke, it is an enrichment valve, pushing the key in activate a solenoid which in turn gives the motor a shot of fuel directly to the reed cage, this helps with cold starts, if u hold the key in too long you can "flood" the cylinders

Nice video bud! When you say you changed the fuel tank and lines, do you mean just the main fuel line or all of them? Like the lines from the carbs, fuel pump, and primer under the cowling. I know larger hp outboards like your motor is more forgiving than a smaller size (2-40 hp) motor. This is a great video, I'm happy when my 50hp starts up easily after only a few months. The only thing I would worry about is corrosion in the carbs if they sat dry that long, especially if ethanol fuel was used. Eventually blocking jets. And did the P.O. fog the motor? I'm sure even if he did, it wouldn't help much after 17 years, but would still like to know more info. Did you have any problems with the fuel pump diaphragm cracking up after using the motor, and how long did it last until it finally needed service?
@billysexton

One of the reasons that happened is when he ran it out of fuel it was still pumping oil into the carbs. Two with the oil tank still being connected it too pushed oil into the carbs , that’s why you had that big plum of smoke when it fired up. By no means this motor is ready for use out on the water. It needs a full service.
