StarTalk Radio is continuing its mission to Make America Smart Again!
What better platform to do it than at the Count Basie Theatre, in Red Bank, New Jersey? On 4/17/17, Neil deGrasse Tyson and his comic co-host Eugene Mirman were joined by New Jersey’s own, U.S. Senator Cory Booker, along with John Holdren, Science Advisor to President Obama, Jo Handelsman, former Associate Director for Science at the White House Office of Science and Technology, and comedians Ophira Eisenberg of NPR’s Ask Me Another and Baratunde Thurston of The Daily Show. You’ll hear discussion on social and political activism, using data to protest, and why science is the best investment for your tax dollars. Discover more about biomedical advances, microbiology, the microbiome, precision medicine, and gene-editing tools. You’ll also hear about rebalancing NASA’s budget to put the “science” back in rocket science. Senator Booker discusses President Trump’s proposed national budget, and the dangers it poses to science and technology in America. Neil talks about testifying in front of Congress, and John and Jo talk about working under the most science savvy President in modern times, President Barak Obama. All that, plus you’ll find out why Carl Sagan was never a fan of superheroes.
Dive into the unseen world of the human microbiome (a collection of microorganisms in the human body) and its ability to control behavior and combat disease. Explore gene-editing tools like CRISPR, how we might genetically modify people to live on Mars, and the ethical grey areas that come with human gene modification. Find out why the government ends up conducting most basic research, while private companies tend to shy away from this critical activity. John also explains why not knowing the outcome is a major part in the process of discovery. You’ll learn about DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and ARPA-E, the Advanced Research Project Agency-Energy, which focuses on investments in alternative energy. Discover the possibility that a naturally occurring electromagnetic pulse could knock out the electrical grid of the United States. Investigate the dangers of Superfund sites and how data is reshaping the way we approach solving problems. You’ll also learn about connecting human biology to the internet, government investments in artificial intelligence, and why John thinks the dangers of AI are being overstated. All that, plus, each member of our panel gives parting thoughts on what it takes to Make America Smart Again.

Communication is so key. I was doing great in relativity, advanced mechanics, and quantum mech but failing astrophysics. My professor would just show up at 8 am and start writing super fast on the chalk board, and I got almost none of it. She was basically writing how she understood it, which even at Vassar was way too much for an undergraduate. I was sobbing to my father, an Engineering Professor about it and he sent me this book, 'The Physical Universe' by Frank Shu. Totally turned the lights on. I realized I already understood a large amount of astrophysics, just by the way he wrote it. Passed the class with flying colors. Point is, humans are inclined to understand science, you just have to show it to them the right way.

I think you meant to say religion should remain out of politics. We need minds educated in science in charge. For 300 years, uneducated minds have had their run at literally destroying anything good. Time for education to take control so this massive dumbing down can finally come to an abrupt end. Science is home for critical thought. A factor missing since this country was founded.

1:30:28 No disrespect, but I think Americans need to read other countries constitutions once in a while to realize all of them are pretty similar. The people writing them knew that it was an important moment (duh...), and they all tried to sound grandiloquent. E.g. In Spain we have this in the preamble: "Colaborar en el fortalecimiento de unas relaciones pacíficas y de eficaz cooperación entre todos los pueblos de la Tierra." Translation: "Collaborate in the strengthening of peaceful relations and effective cooperation among all the peoples of the Earth."

The Zaporozhian-Ukranian Republic had a DEMOCRATIC constitution 78 YEARS BEFORE the U.S. Also the Corsician Constitutions of 1755... And what you said about "the first democracy..." The country of Skithians was the world first true democracy. This governmental system was used in VII-IV centuries BC (before the greeks did it, and this was a TRUE democracy, not like the one in greece) You talk about "the first democracy in the world of monarchies..??" WRONG: We have the Nobles' Democracy (Rzeczpospolita Szlachecka) in the Kingdom of Poland (1573), the Case of Proclamations in England (1610)... And many, MANY more examples. Not by giving flowery speeches. By giving buying power back to the people it was stolen from and remove the mindset of scarcity. The populations most influential vote is with their pocketbook. If I had an extra thousand dollars a month I would have solar panels on my roof in a heartbeat. I would have the extra capital to remove as much of the fossil fuel industry from my day to day as possible. For example. What would you do with an extra 1k a month?

It is 2 years here down the road here in June 2021, I have experienced 7 days straight of temperatures between 110-118 in the Las Vegas area. Some parts may have been slightly higher or lower. Yes, I know it's the desert but these were very unusual high temperatures for June, and all this occurred before the first day of Summer. Sorry, I lied. I only experienced 4 of those 7 days of heat. I luckily had a trip planned and spent my time on the Central Coast of California during the 3 hottest of those days when it was 115-118 degrees F. It was a comfortable mid-70s to 80 degrees at the beach, but the inland wine country areas hit 100-108 degrees in Paso Robles.

@@arsenalgear3009 Indeed, the crux of it is holding them to account and THAT is the key, but that would require people (voters) to actually do their part and that is not just voting, but also get informed and active, starting local communities, being and enacting the change and stances one would like to see. Its easy to just blame elected officials and then sit at home and do nothing a society is built from the ground up and elected officials will be based on that society, since they are "grown" in it and not fabriacted to be politicians.

Fantastic panel and really great discussions. But. As a non American, it strikes me as strange and quite alarming that this discussion about science and its consequences is so littered with mentions of "our country", "this nation" and patriotism. How are such concepts of any relevance in discussions about science?

Sir with all due respect i'm putting forth a new hypothesis on Dark matter DARK MATTER POSSIBLE EXPLANATION HI I'm Sreedath PR a normal student studying in India, in the state of Kerala,Thrissur Currently in 11th grade. I'm proposing a hypothesis on the topic dark matter.. If we consider space and time as a single dimension just like Einstein did in his general theory of relativity, we can explain the unknown gravitational source..let me explain.... Let us imagine that space time has mass. But it is so smaller relative to every other matter including subatomic particles like Quarks,etc..But the fabric of space time is so vast i.e it is in fact the same size the entire universe as a whole. This fabric of spacetime is so light, flexible that every other matter warps it.since we had assumed that spacetime has mass by Newtonian physics it should have gravity.Whatever the material is used in the "manufacturing" of this fabric is so light (I would call it "OZTHON" as a nickname),and probably doesn't have any density. therefore any matter would create a dimple or curve in space time and the gravity of that object overcomes the gravity of the spacetime in that small unit of vacuum that it is almost negligible. But if we consider the whole universe we may find that its gravity is very strong relative to any other entities.. Therefore according to my hypothesis SPACETIME=DARKMATTER Any body who is assosiated with astrophysics reading this..please dedicate this to the attention of the concerned research centres and please do inform me..

One of the best quotes I’ve heard recently is that all government spending is not just spending, some of it is investment. When the government invests in education, R&D, green energy, etc. what we get are actually returns on that investment that are worth far more than the dollars invested because we get an educated workforce, new technologies, and cheaper energy and a cleaner environment. So tell your Congressman to invest your tax dollars in areas that have a return on that investment and not in areas like defense, where for every bomb exploded the money just literally disappears into thin air.

I'm a bit late to this but Neil's final thoughts in this video, there are words that describe exactly what he's trying to explain and it's called 'philosophy' and 'skepticism' . How to question knowledge, how to evaluate information, etc. Scientists and people of science often forget that without philosophy, there wouldn't have been science. The specific methods to evaluate a piece of information, that's the only part that is 'science'. How to approach it, question it, and view it--that's the realm of philosophy. Not saying that people of science can't also have the ability to approach, question and view things but it isn't science if there's no way to measure it, quantify it, and/or give it some concrete basis through other avenues of measurements that hasn't been discovered yet--that's what the 'scientists' keep saying--not the philosophers so they kinda shot themselves in the foot on that one. Otherwise, I do agree with most of what Neil says the rest of the video as well as his panelists.

sad part is... only 4 out of 10 Americans believe and trust science... public opinions.. if it actually ruled and controlled government.. science would be mauled.. half of the american population.. directly and indirectly would ignore separation of church and state to pass religious influenced polices and laws... knowing how to research means nothing... literally go on the internet.. the most popular and most main stream things are people "researching" things then distorting and forcing it to fit their pre established bias... ive met way more people that take the same evidences i see butt they use it in a way to support their own claims/views/agendas/beliefs.. etc... again... only 4 out 10 americans trust science.. while the other 6 out of 10 dont trust it.. or are extremely skeptical of it.. and not skeptical in a scientific mindset type of way... xb

@@InanisNihil False research and actual research are entirely separate. Neil said it perfectly once. "The infinite knowledge of the internet fell in our laps, but no one included a manual so we could avoid the bull shit." If a reasonable person wants to do research on a politician, what do you do? You look at their donors and then you look at their voting history. Simple research which then can allow you to deduce. Ok. I get that a ton of Americans are still idiots. But we shouldn't treat them like babies and hold their hand. You tell them to shut it and sit down. We don't have time for that crap.
