Presenting the exclusive, KZbin video version of our full podcast episode, “Cosmic Queries: Rocket Science is Hard,” complete with a few glitches that got edited out of the podcast! Now you can watch host Neil deGrasse Tyson as he answers fan questions about Antares, Rosetta, Philae, the Space Shuttle and more with the help of Planetary Society CEO Bill Nye the Science Guy and comic co-host Chuck Nice. You’ll learn about the differences between ignoring known risks, as with Challenger and Columbia, and underestimating difficulties, as may be the case with Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo. Find out how Scott Hubbard helped change NASA’s mantra of “Faster, Better, Cheaper” - which led to the failed Mars Climate Orbiter and Mars Polar Lander missions - and replaced it with the successes of Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity. The trio also discusses the possibility of finding life on comets and asteroids, the growing concern over artificial intelligence and robot uprisings, and the human drive to explore the unknown regardless of the risk.
This video was shot during the recording of our episode, " Cosmic Queries: Rocket Science is Hard". If you'd like to listen to the full podcast, click here: www.startalkradio.net/show/cos...

Neil it is okay to get things and words wrong, as long as you get it right in the end, don't feel embarrassed. And Bill it is not always about having the right answer, as much as it is about knowing how to get the answer. It's like I don't have the answer, but let me check my formula. And I haven't forgotten you Chuck. It is awesome to see you one day on CNN, then a week later on Star Talk, plus we have Neil and Bill. Awesome guys, keep up the good work.

Love the use of tactics, and plain competitive aggression from Neil and bill when it comes to debating. Debating must have been quite important in their lives. As it seems to have carried over to when they debate naturally with one another. Strikingly it appears like they care more deeply(in this situation) about the objective of debating. Rather than the topic itself. A beautiful display of their journey through science and its communities. I mean they remember such deep and descriptive details about where they were and how to prove it, and what was said. They use some unbelievable logic, through analogies/examples, about how points in their perspective contradict themselves. Its amazing to watch.

if you don't mind my asking something. of all the scifi shows/movies/books/other media i have watched/read/experienced, how come a situation has never arose where 2 starships met in space but 1 was in an upside down position from the other? the captain says "your ship is upside down, turn it around". captain from the other ship responds "no, it is your ship that is upside down, turn yours around".
@612Tiberius
@612Tiberius 9 жыл бұрын
chiefdancingostriche The way it has been "allegedly" addressed in most movies, etc., is that a standard orientation was previously agreed to; perpendicular to the average orbits of the solar system's planets, and aligned "vertically" in one direction or the other with regard to this orbital plane. At least that's my best guess.
@cpmartins
@cpmartins 9 жыл бұрын
chiefdancingostriche Because they're shows. In shows, the only things the happen are what the author wants. If you are looking for a meta-explanation, then it's simple. The ship's computer automatically aligns the image of the ships to what it's expected. Also no space captain worth their salt would ever utter those statements. They'd make him look like a fool.

hi i have a question. Ever since i little ive always had an interest in the universe. I want to be an astronomer. my question is what is the difference between astrophysicist and astronomer. also, I would love to be an astronaut. I was thinking with astronomy, it could help me get in as an astronaut but looking at the requirements at NASA and it says that they look for people in a higher level in degree for engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics. in order for me to become an astronaut, should i consider these, will astronomy help me get in or no?

Bart Bols you can nitpick the game and find crazy scenario's that shouldn't work. But the orbital mechanics are great and do offer an accurate picture of how space travel works.
@Helghastl33t
@Helghastl33t 9 жыл бұрын
Bart Bols Haha, that sounds like a good time to me! Unfortunately the on rail system is mandatory due to the difficulty of the physics calculations. If everything that is not under your direct control has to be calculated the game becomes unplayable after just a few crafts in space.

No, not depressed, that's just how lots of us scientists feel living in the 21st century with a significant portion of people still denying science. It's pretty f*cking depressing and infuriating to devote yourself to science, the thing which protects and improves humanity, and then have people doubt it.

I feel a similar way, but rather towards philosophy. In a matter of fact I find philosophy a lot more interesting, perhaps because I'm better at it, not because of choice but as of circumstance. See when you have insomnia when you can't sleep you just think. Wish i was better suited for science but I do believe philosophy has much more to contribute to humanity.

What is the validity of "Von Braun's Orbital Anomaly"? In the early space program was the anomalous orbit attained by the craft ever solved? I read the anomalous orbit problem disappeared when Von Braun changed from dynamic stabilization by rotating the rocket structure to using gyroscopic stabilization as the Russians were using. That there were no changes in the math or the science itself (speed, mass, fuel, etc.) only in the design of the spacecraft.
