Joseph's comment brings this video full circle. At the beginning of the video, they're talking about how skimming the event horizon of a black hole you would see the entire lifetime (the future) of the universe. At the end of the video, they were talking about the finite universe where walking from one point in a straight line, you would eventually catch up to the light of your galaxy (the past) where you would see yourself as a child. It gives us a sliding scale of how far into the future or past we wish to travel, but in either direction, it's only visible to us and we're not partaking in it nor can we change it. Ergo, we really are the prisoner of our own time. That is, if I understood this correctly :)

In 26:23 you say, that the square root of 2 doesn't exist in the real world, because that it is an irrational number. But if you make a square with the side lenghts of 1, the diagonal has the same length as the square root of 2. Isn't tne only reason that it is irrational because of the way that we count? Like that a third is 0.33333333333333333333333333... but if we would count in base 3, it would just be 0.1. And nature doesn't care how we count, so isn't it actually possible to have something with the length of the square root of 2 in nature?

Pretty sure it's because pythagorean theorem and trying to square/root the number 1... it's just always 1... so the hypotenuse of a box with equal sides of 1 is also 1 and therefore is not a natural example of "the square root of 2." I don't quite understand the predicament at all whether "root 2 exists in reality," because quite frankly, I haven't even seen any number 2's walking around anywhere in the real world either... if I do I will certainly try to square it up!

People like fun. Have you never had a group of friends? 1 is smart. 1 is kinda serious. 1 is the funny one. Balance of diversity is fun. Some stuck up people who think the world should ALWAYS be nothing but boring information..not that the information ismboring, but the exchange of information being boring..sure, they will have a stickup their ass. NDT actually enjoys sharing information to people whom are less informed, just as much as he likes exchanging with those whom know more. He's explained this many times. This set up was basically a tailor made setup for him.
@animistchannel29835 жыл бұрын
People (more sciency people) have made that observation/complaint since the beginning of the series. Having an "everyman" comedian on the panel is a way for less-sciency people to have a sympathetic representative there, to point out the weirdness or complexity and make the panel bring things to a layman's/public point of view or level of understanding. The actual jokes may be more or less successful, but it keeps the atmosphere a little lighter and stretches the pace so the public audience isn't getting bombarded with stuff that's over their head too fast and/or too many times in a row. If you are already literate in the field at hand, this effort wasn't for your benefit, so it may seem like just a string of interruptions. That's what you get for being a science geek! :) If you want the heavier versions of science & futurism discussions, check out "PBS Space Time" and "Isaac Arthur" channels, or for an in-between presentation level check out "Astronomy Cast" and "The Royal Institution" which are also public but assume a good attention span and focus to topic.

I managed 11 minutes of this and realised how little of the conversation I understood. I think I'll watch Aliens again!

Thinking about this blows my mind. Thinking of how Earth is only a spec (not even) to Space. Scary
@laughingsun62665 жыл бұрын
I hear you. Sometimes I think about myself at the furthest point away from Earth where I can see it as just a tiny spec and it's a bit daunting. Because, we here see it as so big in front of us. But Earth really isn't anything when it comes to space. If Earth were to explode tomorrow, space will be infinite no matter what. Puts it in perspective how much life doesn't really matter. Which that perspective helps when you get stressed out over something so small. Billions of years from now, you won't matter to Earth. And you definitely won't matter to Space.

What's the deal with ScienceTalk rehashing all the old Star Talk stuff, is that a legit channel?

I love the show. I appreciate the greater understanding I have of the world around me. Can we try to leave political parties and views of our elected officials out of what is otherwise a great science learning program.

Maybe next time have a guest that doesnt feel the need to spew out highly biased politics in the middle of a science discussion. Other than that amazing show 👍🏻

the comic relief is ruining the conversation, i never thought i'd say this but please get rid of the comedians
@AA-ye4jd4 жыл бұрын
I agree. Or at least turn it down a bit. Sometimes it slows things down, and some other times it derails the conversation and interrupts thought

These are some fantastic questions.... And to think, I want to take Physics for fun and I just finished taking intermediate college algebra and it was EXTREMELY HARD. But, I enjoyed it because, it was hard. Physics just sounds fun.
