Күн бұрын

How did the largest black holes in the universe form? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice come to you live to learn about the history of black holes, what’s inside them, and new discoveries with cosmologist Janna Levin and astrophysicist & supermassive black hole expert, Jenny Greene.
What is quantum foam? Learn about where relativity meets the quantum and Stephen Hawking’s bet against black holes. We explore the lifecycle of black holes and how they eventually evaporate. We discuss John Wheeler, John Michell, and the father(s) of black hole theory. How massive is a supermassive black hole?
How do we detect black holes since they do not emit light? Do all galaxies have black holes at their center? We talk accretion disks, event horizons, and the electromagnetic power of black holes. We learn about Jenny’s work with the James Webb Space Telescope and how it’s helping us see back in time. Plus, find out how scientists use a dark matter halo to see farther into the cosmos.
What is inside a black hole? We detail what exactly happens during spaghettification and what it would be like to fall into a black hole. What happens within the event horizon? Could the inside of a black hole be made up of quantum black holes? Are we inside a black hole ourselves? We explore time dilation, wormholes, and whether black holes can be created without supernovae. Plus, some cosmic perspectives on our current age of space exploration.
Thanks to our Patrons Leigh Momii, Molly Jebsen, Gilbert Cruz, Robert Colonel, Oliver Orofino, and Stephen Coleman for supporting us this week.

@davidt3956
@davidt3956 9 ай бұрын
If you understand what happened, you know just how bad most astronomers are. At the conference where they demoted Pluto, a committee with planetary scientists defined a planet as something large enough to have gravity making it round and small enough not to have fusion. Simple, clear, logical. At the end of the conference, after most people left, a bunch of astronomers ignored the planetary scientist and made a decision that, while dwarf stars are stars, dwarf planets aren't planets. Nonsensical and non-scientific.

That is what has made me wonder if you actually could resolve what we left on the moon if you coordinated thousands of cameras to take images of the moon at the same time and create on huge data set to create an image from. In the past I used to do something similar with astrophotography where I'd take hundreds of low res images of planets or the moon and stack them with software and then use software to increase the resolution by doing math on the resulting stack of hundreds of images primarily to eliminate the distortion from the atmosphere. I think I calculated that a camera image built out of cameras in a ring 40 miles across might be able to do it.

I think your advocacy for the pursuit of knowledge and curiosity is inspirational to this generation of thinkers and non-thinkers, like Carl Sagan was for his generation. And, having a hilarious co-commentator like Chuck is like the cherry on top. Keep up the great work.

This series never ceases to interest and amaze me. Thank you all. My mom inspired me to love science when I was a very small kid by telling me that the sun was a star. That just blew my little mind! Then I said to her in disbelief that could not be true because the sun is big and bright and stars are little pinpoints. My mom then said if you got close to one of those pinpoints, they would be big and bright too. I went off; always interested in all types of science ever since. But my dreams of being a scientist were almost shattered when I told a teacher I wanted to be a scientist when I grew up. She said that scientists are usually better at math. You see, I was terrible at math. Not rhe 1+1 kind. The long division and more complicated multiplication kind. But one day I was trying to do a long division equation and snap! I suddenly understood it! I don't know how it came to me, but it did, almost like a miracle. I went from the lowest math class in third grade to the second to the highest math class in the same third grade. So much for being terrible at math. From then on math came fairly easily to me and I had AP physcs and AP chemistry in high school. I also went to Argonne National Laboratory in the summer to work on scientific research. I ended up with a chemistry degree and worked in the chemistry field. Kids, don't let anyone tear down your dreams; even if you don't seem to be good at the requirements at first. You never know when talent will come up.😊

It is a pleasure witnessing Neill deGrasse Tyson joining the "universes in the center of black holes" camp more seriously. Speculative science needs these types of camps in which losing is as beneficial as winning and maybe we may never know the exact answer.

@@user-jy6ur8gb1c Just because you don't understand what is being said, that doesn't make it wrong, lies or a word salada. With all respect, it just means you are ignorant about the subject and need to learn more about it to understand. Is like you talking about something you know deeply about, and someone else just calls you a liar, because they don't know or understand what you are talking about, but aren't humble enough to admite it, so they attack you and your knowledge, or worse, they really think all what they know, is everything they need to know or is all what exists to know, and because other people said something, they didn't knew or understand, therefore they can only be wrong and saying bs. Don't be that people.

You can't respond that much to a sentence. It makes you look insane.
@Argoon1981
@Argoon1981 8 ай бұрын
@@ScuffedAndSwagga I take that is directed at me, if so why?! Are you afraid of words? Of reading? Didn't you stop to think that, perhaps those that write big sentences, just have more to say? Perhaps they are more educated individuals (thou this is not always the case...) that think more words, are best to convey a idea properly or perhaps, they just like to write, train their written English? Not my main language btw... I don't know why you would think such a thing, perhaps you don't and are just being obnoxious, because you didn't like what I wrote to the other guy and that's fine. But if you really think, those that write big sentences are "insane" somehow, that is very strange indeed... or insane... So a friendly word of advice (if you are still reading this...) instead of assuming on the mental health of others, based on the numbers of words they write, perhaps you should based it on what they say instead... Btw sorry for writing big sentences again, I know you don't like that.

@@Argoon1981 Does it actually dawn on you? You cooked another word salad. O succus. I don't need "lessons" from a chap who cannot even use basic punctuation. At the end there i caught some 1:31:07 "Carl Sagan Pal Blue Dot Vibes" I know the previous generation like Carl is looking down from the cosmos so very proud of that little boy he met all those years ago excited to learn science has grown into such a fine man. Meeting Carl was destiny for Neil. Moments like this one remind us all of that fact so fondly.
