Hey, Samuel, thank you for your video. Mine was doing the same thing....for years oil was leaking on top of starter, when I got the truck i replaced the valve cover gaskets. After removing I got curious and I open up the brush cover and there it was, it was full of sludge into the brushes and commutator (glad it did not got on fire, smelled like burnt plastic), I cleaned it up with brake clean and contact cleaner, all parts where okay so sanded down commutator and brushes, put all back together, thank God back on the road again. Thank you for the video.

I have the same problem with my 4Runner right now. Although, I didn’t have this problem until after I had bought a new starter from Oriely’s and installed it myself. The weird thing is that it only happens when it’s really cold out and never in regular (or hot) weather. I had tried explaining this noise to the guys at Oriely’s and they didn’t know what the hell I was talking about and I couldn’t replicate the problem while my car was there because it only happens at cold start. Super happy that now I have some validation that I got a bad starter from the start and not because I maybe installed it wrong. Thank man!

Just an FYI, an additional step for those with automatic transmissions, the top part of the trans dipstick tube need to be unbolted from the side of the engine and removed to get the starter out, the tube is right in the way!

Update: I ended up having to cut off that top brake line's bracket with a sawzall. Also my exhaust manifold was a piece of shit and had to be stripped out as best I could, and bolted back with only one bolt. That said, I got the job done.

I just did my 2001 2wd, there is clear access to the starter by removing the rear skid plate, right to the inside of the right strut, straight up. didn't need to remove any brake line braces. I did remove the wheel, but, it really wasn't necessary. Starter nearly just falls out no fuss.

i made the mistake of doing it myself in a driveway and getting it out from the bottom, what i bolitch it was but i did it in 3 1/2 hours i did it myself in my driveway with not all the right tools but i managed to do it mine was particularly stressful because the previous owner had the exhaust done and it had a lip on it that i was fighting i had no choice but to just pull the steering rack lines out of the way and i finally go it out then i had my dad hold the new one in place from the side as i tightened the bolts from the bottom everything was plug and play but god damn fuck that sway bar i fraught it bad to get it back on

I'd love to pick your brain about your manual swap. I know you said just a few things and it ran well. I just found a manual 4runner at a local junkyard and really want to get back into a manual. Were there lots of little things you had to get? I wanna gather all the parts and do it in a few days as I need as little down time better work and school as possible. Most of the parts truck is there. Expect the engine block. I think wiring is all in tact and I'm going to grab the ECU from it as well. If I can swap in a day or two, get it running well enough to drive around, I don't mind tinkering with the rest of the wiring.
