This is the most thorough and the best video I’ve seen on youtube to do this starter replacement. Thumbs up for you sir!

Thanks friend. After 6 attempts, I turned the starter just the way you showed and slipped it through the opening to the wheel well. Your video saved me time and saved me from unnecessary frustration. Thank You!

Thank you so much. I am not a mechanic at all. And at first replacing my starter sounded pretty much impossible without taking it to a shop, but with this video I was able to successfully replace it on my own fairly easily in only like 2-3 hours!

I just finished this and took me about 3 hours by myself on my 2002 4x4 4runner. I don't see how anyone would be able to fit that starter through the tire side like or get it back in. I tried for about 5 minutes and then just let it drop down and took it past the sway bar. Still took some finagling but way easier than the tire side. Did the same way to get it back in. I also didn't need to remove the tire or jack up the 4runner. It would have made it easier but not necessary. Also I'm not sure why all the swivel and extensions were used in the video unless you have large hands. I initially tried it that way because of the video but made it more difficult. I was able to get a ratchet directly on both bolts to get them out- again took some finagling but doable. Not a fun or simply job but you can do it by yourself if you have some mechanic skills and patience.

I’m doing mines as we speak. 2002 4runner can’t really get to the top bolt to take off starter there’s no room under neath. I took the bolts off the break lines so I can move them to the side so I can have a bit more room to work with.
@FireFranPetition4 жыл бұрын
@@RaspyStarkssorry I don't remember exactly how I did it but it really wasn't that difficult and I am far from an experienced mechanic. I just remember there being practically no way I was getting that starter out the tire side without removing lots of parts. It fell pretty easily to be able to grab from underneath. The bolts are a little tricky but maybe easier for me with small hands

@@FireFranPetition I can’t loosen the top bolt I don’t want to strip it.. help!
@FireFranPetition4 жыл бұрын
@@RaspyStarks Are you able to get directly onto the bolt with a ratchet or are you using extensions? If you think it is just a matter of the bolt being tight, then you may need to spray some PB Blaster on it and let it sit for an hour or so before trying again with the wrench.
@RaspyStarks4 жыл бұрын
@@FireFranPetition yo as soon as I left you that last comment I went to store to get that Pb blaster! Shit worked! Now I need to figure out how to get it out there’s no room. It looks like I have to take the dip stick off

I tried to do it on my Toyota Tacoma 1996 V6 Manual Transmission 4WD 5VZ-FE, but I couldn't take away the break lines because one side is welded, but I could do it by passing the Starter Motor above the Power Steering lines. If it is helpful for someone.

Hello! Do you recommend to simply buy a new starter or is better just to buy the parts to fix it? I found a new one on Amazon from a third party company… do you recommend to buy third party or spend more money on the OEM from Toyota? Thank is advance!

Hi my friend, sorry l have a question, l remove the starter from 2001 toyota 4runner but the starter is broken and the star of the starter is stuck in the flywheel, how l can turn the flywheel manually or how l can release it??

Thanks Toyota Maintenance! We just finished. It was a bitch. To anyone trying this, it is imperative that you have a wobble socket and a few extenders for your ratchets/sockets to choose from. Two person job, IMO. Putting the new one in takes 2 people. Someone holds it in place while the other dude bolts it down. Even taking the old one out, ts was handy to have my friend there. 3.5 hrs. A few breaks, here and there. It's kinda maddening. No room to work. No great access at all. You can do it, though... if I can...

Danke shon Toyota Maintenance! Your video was nicely produced, very methodical and to the point without any useless information. I appreciate the tool layout as well, helped considerably even a first time mechanic as myself. My husband has all the tools but I couldn't name anything besides the basic tools yet I found everyone you showed and was able to flex my tinyhands into the cavity and remove starter. Much heavier than anticipated. Once out I called local parts house and they were kind enough to deliver at the door. Your English is very good, my husband is from from Bavaria Germany, but live in Kentucky USA, where are you from? Do you also live in USA?

Just had my starter replaced after 232,000 miles , the mechanic said it was drenched in oil , but I also had my valve covers done 5 months ago by another mechanic who specializes on Japanese cars , what do you think caused oil to be on my starter? Or was that a lie?
