What an awesome Soviet mechanical beast. My family used to own one of those back in Kiev, exact same model and even color. My grandpa bought it new in 1978, and my dad and uncle drove it until 1998 when they sold it (it still ran). I wish I can someday come back and take one of those for a spin.

I've always loved the 2140. Dad used to have and drive one as a daily until 2007, so I, being 94', learned to drive on it before it went for scrap. It felt like a race car back when I was 12 when I first started to drive it.

@y Yes, It does look very similar to the BMW engine but not 100% the same. I think that the engine from your car was developed/derived using the same basic design of that M10 BMW engine with some minor changes here and there to suit your Moskvich car application. Fascinating !

Moskviches never had 2 stroke engines from factory. Either you mixed it up with another car or you built a custom one, which wasn't all that uncommon in those years in eastern bloc countries, infact I wish more of those garage built "customs" survived to this day, I wanted to buy a GAZ-24 Volga with 2.4TD Andoria 4C90 Polish Diesel engine but I decided it was way too rusty even for $700. Too bad.

This car is what you would see in Iron Curtain countries. I know someone who is a retired school teacher and he visited Poland, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria 🇧🇬, Romania, and Czechoslovakia. In the photos he took. There were a lot cars but if you want to get a car, they put you on a waiting list which can be up to ten years for delivery. Only the lucky ones can have a car. A member of the politbureau would drive a Volvo, BMW, or a Mercedes-Benz.

In Bulgaria it was 10 years for a Lada, which was more expensive, but for a Moskvich it was 2 years, only because they for our market they were assembled locally, in Lovech. 2 years is still rediculous at those prices compared to the salary back then but still not as crazy as 10.
