I had a Jawa 500 4 valve in 1981 to 83 when I was driving speedway in sweden. I can feel the sound from the past. Goran

At 0:30 You can just pull the spark plug and achieve the same results for the dry top end. Take the plug out, and wind the back wheel till you see the oil run through the oil pump tube. Or, drill and tap two holes with set screws above the cams on the valve cover, and inject oil into the valve cover. Either way, saves time and a gasket-- 3:25 Anyway, nice Jawa '894'--this is the 38mm Factory(1976-79) Mikuni carb side port. The 895 was a center port, with a Dellorto 34mm factory carb. This motor won many World Championships in sPeEdWaY, it received a bad reputation on the 'Amateur' circuit, because some guys didn't know how to time it, since there were no timing marks for the twin cam set-up.

LOL! Yeah! she certainly took off when she fired and I had to struggle to bring her under control alright. The bike has given me an enormouse amount of satisfaction getting it going after so many years of gathering dust. It actually has an enormous amount of history including winning an Australian title many years ago (so I have been told)
@dennymcfastlane85305 жыл бұрын
Your 1977-79? Jawa Twin cam side port has the outlawed factory 38mm Mikuni Carb. The FIM ditched this carb, and conformed all speedway carbs at 34mm, even to this present day. Nice M/C.

Thanks pyrofella, The oil syringe is a commonly available item from any auto shop. I got mine from the local Auto One here in Australia for around the $8AUS mark, but depending where you are in the world, any auto shop will sell them. They're great for bleeding brakes as well.

Truth of the matter is I've never raced one - my scene was more enduros and motocross. This bike kinda lobbed in my lap as a non running wreck, and being the person I am, I took enormous joy in fixing up and getting it running again. Even though I have run it around a track relatively slowly (and believe me, it wanted to take off), the only running it gets is once every couple of months or so as you see here. However, it would be good so see it ridden around a track the way it should be!

Thanks for that. Having not cleaned out all the R40 from it the last time someone ran it was as if they had tipped a bucket of areldite down the top end and then left it for 20 years or so. The main challenge was cleaning all that out. I now run Penrite 50 or any other reasonable MINERAL oil in it. It still runs on Methanol though. Mind you I try to run it up every month or so - having said that, I'd better go out there now and give her a quick run up now! Maybe put your up on U Tube as well!

It acts surprisingly user friendly considering. I trust there is no oil ring on the piston? I once got to try a friend's push-rod Jawa speedway bike in the mid '70s. Sure are clumsy to operate in an off track environment. Too bad the basic engine design didn't go into a street worthy version with unit construction and gas fueled, of course.

I've received a lot of requests, and dare I say flack about seeing the bike racing. Truth of the matter is I have never raced one of these bikes and before we were to even think of racing this one, it would have to be completely disassembled, inspected and re-built. Keep in mind, the bike was made operational again (from a completely seized state) with a whole lot of WD40 and mountains of oil syringed through all the oil galleries - the engine was never fully disassembled. I'm sure one day we'll give it a burn around a track in a classic race situation, however that will be after the motor is completely re-built (when I have the time and $'s to spend on it) and in the hands of a good rider!

It won't idle? Don't expect it to live long, revving a stone cold motor like that but hey, it's your machine...
@whalesong9998 жыл бұрын
+Gary Chandler There may not be an idle stop screw but I don't know. He seemed to treat it quite gently in the revving. Castor oil can be the worst possible thing to store a motor with and running alcohol is also bad in combination - I know from model airplane engine experience. Seems like current synthetics would be better in this day.
@garychandler42968 жыл бұрын
po18guy When older motors are cold, the pistons, etc. are more oval in shape, and get circular when warm. This can cause piston slap and more wear. Modern engines have tighter tolerances and better alloys, thus not as much a problem, although I still warm a motor before using heavier throttle.
@garychandler42968 жыл бұрын
+po18guy -Actually, you're right as I wasn't thinking of race-only engines, but rather engines in general, broken in or not... Old habits of a US Coast Guard engineman/machinery tech!
@whalesong9998 жыл бұрын
It's sorta fun to see the comments coming in here. Us tech/engine folks that have seen many a motor to attend to! I was a svc. mgr./tech on bikes for about 15 years, still lots of fresh recall to draw on as I see others do to.
@garychandler42968 жыл бұрын
+whalesong999 Just rewatched the video and admit it's not revving as hard as I'd thot - may have confused it with another video. 🎱
