Mechanical engineer here-those screw and bolt markings are usually done with a paint marker and NOT sharpie. They span the head of the bolt and onto the clamped part. In addition to being a process control, you can see cracks in the paint during an inspection if the screw is undoing itself but not loose yet. Love the content!
@bryancohn94064 жыл бұрын
When I learned about this technique in the early 80’s it was called “Torque Stripping” by the various aircraft mechanics and race car mechanics. We used a special paint on the race cars I worked on that came from McDonnel Douglas surplus! The best part is the colors were hilarious, pink, baby blue, rubber duck yellow. The sharpie method works to let you know you torqued the bolt/nut, I’ve done that as well, but as you point out Allen it’s not how you mark a bolt or nut for torque/movement/loosening.
@mattadulting4 жыл бұрын
I came in to comment this same thing with the knowledge...but without the degree.
@RideBreakFix4 жыл бұрын
how about turn of the nut method? would think they'd just use a torque wrench on everything unless it's a tough to get to spot. I'm an ironworker and we have to mark hundreds of thousands of bolts as we gun them up. snug tight with a wrench, then get X amount of rotation with the impact according to bolt length/size.
@alancheng8294 жыл бұрын
@@RideBreakFix These are all methods that work towards a common goal but for different applications. Turn of the nut method was one I investigated in the nuclear medical device industry due to large cantilevered loads. For joints where you’re far from the rated capacity of the screw and nut, turn of the nut could be okay. It sets somewhat of a low-bound for preload (clamping force before external loading) in the joint so that you’re likely never to go under that bound. However, it can risk going over the top bound of preload in a joint, and you can actually lose more preload over time. This depends on length of joint, friction, etc. Nowadays, with modern digital torque wrenches and precision torque drivers along with better software for calculations, simulations, and testing, usually the best thing to do is to torque to the prescribed value and dust your hands off.

Good job glad to see it coming together. So the suspension "reservoirs" as you called them they are the stut accumulators. They give the suspension it's softer feel in the different modes due to half of it being filled with pressurized gas. When they are bad you only have track feel in all modes. The reservoir is shared by the suspension and steering along with the steering pump. The best way to fill that cooling system is to vacuum fill it. I use an airlift they work great on any car but needed to fill rear engine cars with front radiators. The ignition has 5 stages so that's why it takes so many pushes to turn it on in accessory mode. Another fun fact is half of the time the special McLaren suspension bleeding tool doesn't even work like it's supposed to so you can bleed it manually by running the system and having blocks under L-F and R-R and lowering the car down then do the opposite a few times that helps. Spoiler bleed is easy just do about 10 hard stops over 60mph and that will activate the air brake and work the air out. If that doesn't work then you need to run the bleed/calibration routine with the McLaren scan tool. Cheers!
