Amazing Tips! Especially on the clouds and mountains which I've been having a lot of trouble with. Could you please show your cleaning set up as you paint? And also what techniques you use for a swift cleanup? Question: Lots of brushes? Or lots of paint thinner? As I'm painting I am constantly having to keep cleaning my brush, especially between switching between dark and light colours, also keeping my blending brush clean is quite a chore. How many brushes of the same type would you recommend, and which ones are better suited to paining a typical mountainous bob ross?

Big help Wild-man! I think I am putting way too much paint with each layer I apply, beginning with the magic white. . When I told you "I lost my way" trying to memick one of your paintings, what I meant was my intended blue sky turned out to be light biege, looked like mud. Horrible. I think too much paint is one of my stumbling blocks. I am excited to go try less everything. Dabbing the clouds in instead of sliding them on I am gonna try also :) Thanks again.

How much paint do you put in the knife for the mountains? I feel like I have a hard time forming them cause I can't get the paint off the knife
@Wild4
@Wild4 7 жыл бұрын
If you are a beginner painter I do recommend a big roll of paint on your knife and a "Not-So-Sharp" Palette Knife. As you practice and get the hang of it, you will start to use less and less paint and you can upgrade to the sharp knife. Here is a video that I did that might help you out kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJ7bk2B5pbZ0n7M - Hopefully this will do the trick :)

Is there a way you can make acrylics work for this style? I have a ton I don’t want to go to waste (I bought acrylic not knowing the difference between what bob ross uses and what I’ve used in the past) I’ve seen people use some kind of thinner but not sure what kind or if it will even work.
@Wild4
@Wild4 5 жыл бұрын
There are mediums you can buy that will keep the acrylic wet for longer. But that means you would have to buy more supplies. You can always use a little bit of water and work in smaller sections as you paint and that will work too.

I found this absolutely helpful! However, I faced a little problem after watching bob ross's tutorials followed by your channel... When I started painting my dark greens used for distance trees in between mountains and a lake, the green started to mix with the colors on the canvas, so instead of it being murky green, it faded into the canvas??? I don't even know if that's the proper term, I'm a total noob! But still, I'm really glad of how my painting kind of turned out thanks to your in-depth tutorials!

#wetonwetpainting Like many beginners I bought a cheap starter kit. I have discovered they're too oily. So now I use paper or cardboard as a palette, which soaks up the extra oil. I'll be buying or make a palette out of wood. 2 Less paint is better. Thinner coats. 3 And not be in a rush. 28 minutes is unreal. Cleaning brushes especially takes time. The whole blending, diffusing thing makes mud often enough, no matter how softly I brush. I've discovered there's Too much oil in cheap paint. But cheap is good enough for a beginner. Now that I've realized this I'm making progress. I Use paper or wood as a palette to soak out the extra oil, instead of a plexiglass Bob Ross palette.

@Wild4

Most canvases you buy already have a basic coat or two of gesso. So you can just apply Liquid White directly. But just to let you know the cheaper the canvas, the quicker it could absorb your Liquid White. I hope that helps. If you need any more tips, I am launching a new art channel this wee. Hi! I have a problem with my panting, after i have painted the sky i want to add clouds. But when i add white paint to the canvas, my paint brush which is filled with white color, starts picking up the blue color that is already on the canvas. So all the white color just sort of dissapears in the blue... I have applyed tripple gesso, Liqiud white like you have. And i am pretty sure i didnt use that much blue, i have even went over the sky with a dry brush 3 times. This problem also happens when putting snow on the black mountain, insted of white on black, i just get a grey mountain :( WHat could be the problem? Am i still using too much blue paint? Could the paintings im using not be good enough quality? It is oil paint, but not like bob ross paint. Please help me, this is driving me crazy! I feel i am so close now to be able to paint a picture. Thank u! love your videos!
@Wild4
@Wild4 6 жыл бұрын
It could be a few things but most common issue us to much liquid white base and too much blue. Blue is a really strong color and it doesn't take very much to cover the sky. If you White paint is too firm and a drop or two of linseed or walnut oil ( this will allow your clouds to flow. Wipe off your brush after every cloud you do ( picking up base color can not be avoided - its just part of the process ) Here is one of my older videos ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5LZg6iKf9OJb9U ) it should help you out a lot 💪

Kind of a dumb question but i was looking for some extra gesso since you mentioned putting an extra layer will help. But what kind of gesso's do i need to avoid because i was looking and a majority of the time i come across acrylic gesso which i assume will not work for oil painting and wet on wet techniques. I'm trying to find local equivalents to the bob ross gesso.

@anthonyhargis9411
@anthonyhargis9411 5 жыл бұрын
@@Xanarulez I was told that the Gesso is water based, so you should be able to clean with water and super clean up with dish soap and water if necessary The Gesso has to dry over night or 24 hours before you apply the liquid white base coat to the canvas before starting your painting.

thank you so much for this! This was very helpful. I just started doing a mountain range painting and I found it wasn't coming out the way I want to. I was using a reference photo and it was hard for me to emulate it accurately so I was trying to find what I was doing wrong. The thing is watching this I realized I was doing the clouds completely wrong but I already started them. Also I did a few other things wrong. When you mess up like this is there a way to fix it or is the painting just ruined?

I have a question about the wet on wet technique. What do you do if you paint part of a painting, and than life happens and the painting dries. Do you put more magic white on th area you want to work on. I'm not quite sure how to go about this

so i have a pretty dumb question. instead of inking my signature on each painting with a script brush and some thinner. Can i just get my signature done on a rubber stamp and dip the stamp in the color oil paint i desire and stamp it on each painting?
@Wild4
@Wild4 6 жыл бұрын
There are no dumb questions 💪 Funny thing is, I hate my signature too when I paint it on. I have thought about doing the same but never tried it. I dont think the paint would form well compared to wax seals. I normally sign the back of the canvas in ink. That was my work around - I hope that helped. Happy Painting 💪 Thanks for the dumb question 😝

Wild4Games thanks for the reply on the dumb question! I have another. Not related to the signature stamping though. I am a screen printer by trade. I had an idea of screen printing a logo on the canvas using liquid clear and then doing a nice blended background around the edges and corners. Do you think this could work?

With the oil being from the magic white, does it mean that you don't need to mix any more oil on your individual colours?
@Wild4

Adding more oil would increase the flow or effect the dry times. So if you want to do that to your paint, then you would add more.

Regarding canvases at Michael's, what's the significant difference between level 1, level 2, and level 3 canvases (besides the price)?
@Wild4
@Wild4 7 жыл бұрын
I plan on making a video about this soon, but the short answer is: As you move up in "Levels" the Canvas cotton or linen will be thicker and more durable. There will be better and more coats of gesso. The frame will have strong wood and move into gallery wrap style. There are a few more small things, but I will cover that in the future video. I hope that helps

I find the canvas is also looser on inexpensive canvas. An art teacher showed me a cool trick to tighten them up. Use diluted Elmer"s glue, 4:1 ratio water to glue, painted on the BACK of the canvas. Works immediately. AMAZING.I keep a container mixed all the time, slather it on the BACK, and it takes no time to dry.
@Wild4
@Wild4 7 жыл бұрын
Good tip, You can also use shims (little wooden pieces) they can be used to tighten the canvas by squeezing them into the frame corners. You can spray some water on the back of the canvas let it dry in the sun and this will make it tighter. You can also gesso or acrylic the back of the canvas (kinda like your glue trick) All good tips :)
