2nd half of "Slightly All the Time" by Mike Ratledge , of the Soft Machine.
The only recording of this full "Double-Time" movement (as I call it)
that I know of is on the Soft Machine's Third album, from 1970.
The harmonic structure / palette is (in) *Dorian mode*.
I transposed it down from original key of D to a tonal centre of B-flat.
This music could be described as an example of Third-stream Jazz composition (maybe?).
The time signature is some sort of 11 over 8 (or maybe 4).
Pedal Point (-Bass note-) - repeating ostenato / riff) underpins (serves as accompaniment to) the two flute parts (lines) - a la Indian drone or (minimalist / impressionistic ? ) Modal Post-Bop music of the John Coltrane Quartet of the 1960s.
==== Music tech notes ====
I used samples of flutes (soprano + alto) from the University of Iowa , (as opposed to Mellotron 3-flutes sound -- see other video on my channel : • Slightly All the Time ... )
to play the two flute lines. Those samples are playable in the form of a VSTi called "Sonatina" (generated by Maize sampler). (Thanks Big Cat !) Each is panned hard into each of the two stereo audio channels (left and right).
----
The electric piano sound is produced by a VSTi called "Mr. Tramp"
(It's a "Wurli" sound.)
In contrast with the other, similar video that I made (of the same MIDI sequence playing back),
the electric piano tone is more mellow (less bite/aggressiveness/hardness) and is an octave (register) higher.
And, I'm using version 1 of this VSTi .dll (dated: April 2, 2005, 11:41:34 AM),
not Mr.Tramp2, which I used in the video with the mellotron flute sound.
Additionally, this video contrasts with its mellotron 3flutes counterpart
in that the score (notation / transcription) that is shown
was not the public view of the score, but instead
what I see when logged in with my Note Flight account, and using the Flash editor. Note heads are highlighted (hi-lited) when my mouse cursor hovers over them.
---------
Download a .zip file (ZIP archive package) that contains
the MIDI sequence that I used, that was exported from my posting of my transcription on NoteFlight
( www.noteflight.... - skip to measure #50, I think.
What is heard starts at rehearsal mark | B | (which is at measure #50)
But what is shown , visually, in this video is what starts at rehearsal mark/block " C " (m. 54). That four-measure intro sets the tone/tempo and gave me a chance to switch from the VSThost app to the web browser which had the Note Flight score/notation transcription open.
)
Exports in Music-XML (notation/score) format are in there,
as well as a folder containing the VST presets (patch/program settings / configuration files).
