I LOVE the politics in star wars! I understand why leaning heavy into the politics in the MOVIES might not be the best since they only have a short amount of time to tell the story. Still, the atmosphere set by the opening crawl of the phantom menace with the taxation of trade routs by the trade federation is one of my favorites. Some of my favorite episodes of the clone wars are the ones that focus on galactic politics. I like when multiple parties with different motives are involved rather than just 'good vs. evil'. I get tired of "the good guy is good because he's the good and the bad guy is bad because he's the bad guy." Having many different sides all with unique motives keeps thing real and keeps things interesting. For a long time now I wished for a star wars political drama novel. This seams to be the closest to that yet. I really look forward to reading this book.

There are plenty of good Star Wars political novels that already exist. The one I’d recommend is Bloodlines by Claudia Grey; it covers Leia’s time in the New Republic senate and the political factions leading up to Episode 7, and while the First Order is ultimately behind most of the conflict, you get a very good look at how exactly they finance their operations, how they gain support, and why a good natured person in a post-Empire galaxy would still sympathize with them.

Honestly, it was a very wholesome video. It's a topic that could've gotten very heated and generated a lot of toxic discussions (from both sides), but it was just people talking about how much they liked the books, and it made me glad to see them glad. It was positive, that's awesome. I do think that the way Mollie said "finally getting the representation" *can* make it sound like they never value representation (or at least that it's as bad as your average movie, book, etc), which isn't accurate, Star Wars has a lot of awesome female characters that I admire a lot, even without looking for it. People like Rey, Leia, Admiral Sloane, and a bunch more.

To be honest, I've been re-watching some TPM clips on KZbin and Padme was always kind of a better character apart from Anakin than with him. I'm a pretty big Prequel defender, and I still admit they botched their romance pretty bad.
@ultratankie5 жыл бұрын
I think their relationship is pretty genuine if you get past and ignore how it got started lol. There are definitely still toxic elements to it, but I think those are usually subtle enough to be realistic, and it’s hardly as if the narrative is advocating for it. If anything, their romance is very much a cautionary tale about possessiveness. Although, even as I type that, I realize that that’s mostly the perspective from Anakin’s POV. Padmé is never over-possessive; she’s very good at balancing her professional duties with her husband. Couple it with the fact that she met him at age 9 and the attraction really is hard to understand on her side.

You even have examples from canon material, Leia: Princess of Alderaan, Ahsoka, Bloodline, Phasma, Rebel Rising, Inferno Squad, Dark Disciple, etc. so yeah, by saying "finally" it does a disservice to what's come before
@JesperJotun5 жыл бұрын
I caught that too. Kinda odd for a Star Wars fan to make that comment. Especially considering the diversity of the Legends material. Particular note is the story of Asyr Sei'lar - the Bothan pilot of Rogue Squadron. It's almost like Star Wars, pre-Disney, never existed and only the new stuff has any relevancy to some folks. That may come across as harsh, but I'm sincerely dumbfounded by the assertion that females have been "absent" or not getting enough attention in Star Wars. Off the top of my head, from several multi-book series, we've got Jaina Solo, Tenel-Ka, Mara Jade, Asyr Sei'lar, Lujayne Forge, Inyri Forge, Erisi Dlaret, Iella Wessiri, Winter, and let's not forget the original "female Han Solo" Mirrax Terrik. Not to mention one of the best villains in the Star Wars universe as well - Ysanne Isard. I get these books are 2 decades old now, and not promoted due to the "Legends" banner, but they existed. Older fans know and relished this kind of stuff, and to see it not only swept away, but their relevancy going completely unsung is really...shortsighted and rather unfair. We've had great female characters in Star Wars.
@Mollie_Damon5 жыл бұрын
By attention I mean meaningful background and side stories - and specifically in Canon since I never really got into into Legends. I never really enjoyed Star Wars books because there weren't enough female characters that I could identify with. Now books like Phasma, Leia Princess of Alderaan, Ahsoka etc are giving women more books with female leads to enjoy. This is not me taking a stand and saying TAKE MEN OUT OF STAR WARS. I have no agenda. This is just how I feel and I don't understand why people jump down my throat about it.

I feel like there's a lot they can still tell about Rey, as so far she's basically just an enigma. Depending on what they do in the 9th movie of course. Rey is one of the few things I like about the sequels, so I'd like to hear more as well. In the short book before the 7th movie and they told the story about her learning to fly and then finding and rebuilding a ship before it gets stolen, really adds a lot to her character and what we see in the 7th movie feels a lot more fitting and that's just in a small amount of pages.

I enjoyed the development/life of Padme delving into the world of the Galactic Senate and how it's difficult for her not to help out as much as she'd like and how it makes her feel small; in terms of character, I related with that the most. My only "complaint" of the book is that I think it intended to be longer **slight spoilers here** because the whole segment about the disaster relief for Bromlarch seemed so rushed, especially with only 30 or so pages before the book ended. Additionally, her relationship with Clovis was developing slowly and I'm sure if the book were longer, it would've seemed more believable that they had the relationship that the Clone Wars wanted us to believe; instead, in the book, we get maybe several interactions at most and a weird scene that just gets dropped out of nowhere.
Cool this is finally out. Im thinking about getting into the EU books. Canon or otherwise. What would you guys recommend I start with?

I’ve never been a huge fan of Padmé, but that might honestly have a lot to do with the way she’s always been depicted as one half of Anakin-most people in pop culture remember her only as the reason why he became Darth Vader, who then died of bad writing. I’m a big fan of Bloodlines and other stories that cover the intertwining political and personal lives of characters like Leia and Mon Mothma, so I’ll have to check this book out to get more of that one-on-one perspective with her. As an aside, I genuinely had no idea that a solo Padmé political novel didn’t already exist or that so many female fans were excited for it. It would’ve never occurred to me and I honestly looked at the announcement as a novelty; props to EK Johnson and whoever it was at Lucasfilm for filling that void. I’m very happy that more of these voices are being heard in such a classically male fandom.

The chosen One prophecy is just something the Jedi believed there are many different interpretations both in the star wars universe and for fans. Who the chosen one is, is fully down to your opinion or if you even believe it's true. Personally I don't really think it's one person. We look at it very literally, but there's no one person who brought balance to the galaxy by them self. To me the act of Qui-gon bringing Anakin in could well have fulfilled the prophecy. That set everything in motion to eventually bring balance. On the other hand it could even be complete non sense that they just believed a long with how they believed the Jedi were pure light and how they and only they could save the galaxy.

I unsubscribed months ago because I didn't like how you tried to discredit peoples' opinions of Star Wars content on the basis that they were men and therefore, you acted as though their opinions did not matter. You said things here and there on your channel and on twitter that were, when you get down to it, actually sexist. I just didn't want to support that behavior. Then I watch less than two minutes of this video and you compare Padme Amidala to Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. I also don't wish to engage in a political argument or anything of the sort, but you mischaracterized many peoples' opinions yet again and I must respond to that. Contrary to what you would have your viewers believe, a vast majority of AOC's critics don't care about her inexperience or the way she dresses. They just don't want leftists like her promoting truly communist propaganda and policies like the Green New Deal. The critique is actually because of her political opinions and policies she proposes/supports. Not her appearance or age. So, though you may not appreciate this comment, I must say may the force be with you, sir.

O gotta he honest, I didn't know lich about the handmaidens, but after this hook, o want to learn more I think I missed a few connections, but I'm sure I'll figure those out soon.

Just finished the book and was one of the more enjoyable books to read so far in the new canon. Padme had always been one of my least favorite characters in Star Wars because I think her character was poorly written in the prequels and in TCW she really was just a side character to help expand Anakin and/or Ahsoka's story (I don't think there are very many episodes at all in TCW that are centered strictly on her (even the Clovis episode was really just an episode meant to display Anakin's built up rage he had inside)). This book went along way into making Padme's character seem more relatable. Also another big plus for this book were the Handmaiden's story. I honestly didn't even realize that all her Handmaiden's from the PT had been given official names. At first I thought those names were just created for this particular book and was surprised to see that Sabe and Corde….amongst others had been around ever since '99 or '02. Definitely wouldn't mind seeing Sabe pop up in another story in the future about the very early days of the formation of the Rebellion. She probably doesn't need to be a main character in a story but just having her make an appearance in another book and saying 'officially' what she has been up to would be cool. I think Alex was right though when he said there is a good chance the intention at the end of the book is for her to stay around and watch over/help teach young Leia in how to grow up in a royal atmosphere. The Leia book doesn't start up until Leia is 16 so there would be plenty of room to fit Sabe into Leia's story even though she isn't mentioned in the Leia Princess of Alderaan book.

Sabé did join the rebels by working with Bail Organa on Alderaan, and trained Leia and her best friend Winter Celchu Recently, we also saw her cross paths with Darth Vader and try to prevent him from entering Padmé's tomb

Bob the Cucumber If you aren't interested in the first part, you probably won't be interested in the entire thing. Near-zero action.

Haha funny joke that's totally relevant to the video. All Because Lucasfilm wanted more creative control of their own property they stopped a continuity that left no room for new things. Haha you're totally not just commenting on any video in your recommended feed haha

I honestly was never a big fan of padme in the prequel trilogy, and probably my least favourite character introduced in that era. I don't know if it was just me, but I think Natalie Portman was just shoehorning in the role. Her character definitely improved in the clone wars, and I'm really looking forward to seeing which direction her character is taken in this book too.

Just started it this morning. While I'm only a couple chapters in, so far, it really is a breath of fresh air after enduring 2018's relatively weak literary offerings.

Really excited to read this one. Padme is a character that's LONG overdue for some love and some really in depth exploration. (Also, I was thinking of the AOC connection when Alex began to describe it and then he actually said it. It makes sense. Lucas always made parallels like that.)

Some real George Lucas quotes. “No, he [Palpatine] was a politician. Richard M. Nixon was his name. He subverted the senate and finally took over and became an imperial guy and he was really evil. But he pretended to be a really nice guy.” -George Lucas 1981 “It was really about the Vietnam War, and that was the period where Nixon was trying to run for a [second] term, which got me to thinking historically about how do democracies get turned into dictatorships? Because the democracies aren’t overthrown; they’re given away.” -George Lucas 2005 And how George Lucas came up with Nute Gunray's name.
