The Non-Canon Expert looks at the unique attributes behind a lightsaber combat form that was expressed as allowing every member in the history of the Jedi Order who achieved true mastery of its techniques to never be defeated in lightsaber combat, explaining it's benefits against Sith opponents and important examples of its use from within the lore.
This is a Legends story discussing lightsaber combat with information found in a number of Legends sources, but primarily within "Star Wars: Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force," The Jedi Path reference book, the Book of Sith reference book, "Star Wars: Darth Bane: Rule of Two," "Star Wars: Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil," and the Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith novelization. I hope that you enjoy it!

Sort of, he lacked adaptability. Bane was amazingly skilled, but he had an over reliance on sequences. When those failed, he was horrible at improvisation, defaulting to using his massive Force power like a big hammer. He never addressed this weakness either, even when it almost killed him against Blademaster Kaasim, so it effectively killed him against Zannah.

When I was a teenager I was really fascinated by traditional martial arts, because the UFC was only six or seven years old at the time, so it was still socially permissible to claim obvious bullshit like "Dragon kung fu has twisting, evasive footwork, but Eagle Claw has better wrist locks and nerve strikes!!" It only took a couple beatings for me to switch on over to MMA, but even now I miss the mystery and romance of believing this stuff existed in real life.

@@LAVATORR No comment on traditional forms, but anger is empowering without enhancing skill. It can make you strong and aggressive, but tends to screw up fine motor skills. So it beats a less skilled or experienced opponent, but a calmer and more experienced opponent may leave the anger- user having let anger hurl himself too far up the shore of overcommitment, leaving them up shit Creek. Glad other martial artists are enjoying this too.

This kind of stuff has real life parallels in fighting games. Anakin lost to Obi because he got salty and fed up with Obi Wan's stalling, tried an absolutely stupid "mixup" to get through and Obi Wan got a hard read and ended the set right there. Anakin even started screaming in rage at the end.

In the novelization of Episode III, It was described that when Obi-Wan fully invested his Soresu into the Force, the Force guided him to where his defense needed to be. And when an opening presented itself, it was the Force reacting before Obi-Wan could consciously perceive the opening. As to the technique for defeating Grievous, we saw an element of Soresu's offensive tactics where it shifts from defense to offense by transitioning the block into a sliding strike towards the hand holding the attacking weapon, hence two of Grievous' four hands being sliced apart/off.

You'd think the Sith could easily adapt by developing a style similar to real life Silat or Kali, where creating fake openings/exposure to lure an attack from the opponent, then counterattacking, would be a perfect deception-based counter. Just fake getting tired or upset, then decieve your opponent and trick them into going for the kill, then kill them instead. Possibly even taking a minor hit to land a more devastating blow.

"Why Jedi who mastered this lightsaber combat form were undefeated against Sith" Except that Obi-Wan, the greatest master of Soresu during the Clone Wars, nearly lost to Grievous, was defeated by Dooku... twice, and effectively stalemated against Anakin until he acquired the high ground and Anakin did something dumb.
@SammytheTongue
@SammytheTongue 4 жыл бұрын
Actually he didn't lose to Grievous, he lost his lightsaber AFTER Grievous ran like a bitch, and Dooku was an extremely powerful Force user and he was able to penetrate Obi-Wan's Force barrier with ease. Dooku was able to do this due to his sheer power in the Force and Obi-Wan's concentration upon his form. So Obi-Wan didn't lose in a lightsaber duel after he mastered Soresu, that was until he gave himself to the Force during ANH. During the battle on Geonosis he lost to Dooku because he simply hadn't mastered Soresu yet. Anakin was overconfident, yes but Obi-Wan was more level headed and was able to think clearly without immense rage and hurt clouding his judgement. Plus Obi-Wan was literally conserving his energy the entire time, there were multiple points where he could have taken him out with a flick of his wrist

On the fight with Anakin... the reason Soresu is powerful against sith is exactly because it can stalemate them until they do something dumb. Because sith fight so emotionally, it's basically inevitable that they do something rash and stupid out of frustration if the fight drags on long enough.

A hybrid form combining elements of Makashi, Soresu and Juyo/Vaapad would be hard to beat in theory, as it would be overall all-rounded. Makashi for offense, Soresu for defense, and Juyo/Vaapad providing an extra touch of power due to it's reliance on passion, rage and unpredictability.

Give me a break. Anakin was confirmed as the better fighter by Lucas, the fight choreographer and the major sources in the EU. The only reason Kenobi lasted so long was because he knew how Anakin fought. That, coupled with the environment allowed him to keep pulling back. If it were neutral ground, that fight would have been won by Anakin, and that’s established by almost all the sources, including Lucas.

But thats just not true. THE master of the form Obi wan Kenobi was defeated few times by opponents piercing his force shield with their force attacks (like Count Dooku did in episode 3 if not for Anakin Obi wan would be dead), Soretsu was so focused on lightsaber and blasted deflection that it could be bypassed by the force (at least i remember so).

I have a theory on the obi wan and dooku rematch Palpatine's plan was to have Anikan fight dooku and give in to his anger so he would have wanted obi wan out of the fight every force user has a force shield to stop moves like a force choke the shield can be bypassed if another force user just out classes the other one and since Palpatine is at least on par with yoda he could take out obi wan's shield leaving him open to force attacks if you go back to the movie you can even see Palpatine gazing at obi wan but that's just my theory

This statement is only MOSTLY correct. Obi-Wan still lost against Dooku despite mastering Form III. While it is true, Dooku may or may not have simply overpowered Kenobi with the force, the fact remains he fought again Obi-Wan AND Anakin. And should he have been alone against Kenobi, it's very possible he could have defeated Soresu with his saber alone.

Using economy of motions of Form III, before counter attacking with Form V. Maybe later on I would start using bits of Form VI, but otherwise, it's my form.

All this theory on forms and such is interesting and a loved part of Star Wars, but I find it curious, as a purly defensive sword fighting form is going to get one killed as they forfeit any influence on how the fight unfolds. It's rare that a sword fight goes beyond three actions before a strike or a thrust lands. So to survive an excellent swordsman must press the attack enough without overcommitment. Use feints to bring the opposition to a state of imbalance, then strike when the opportunity arises. Having tight defensive form really helps as well. But a purely defensive form 3 being more powerful? Not possible. Having said that Obi Wan is my fave. He always was the huckleberry hero, which makes him so fun to watch in the prequels.

Your looking at it from the wrong perspective. Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker was a level 9 Master Duelist. Jedi Master Obi-wan Kenobi was a level 8 Master Duelist. Jedi Master Cin Dralic was a level 5 Master Duelist. Jedi Master Mace Windu was a level 10 Master Duelist, as was Master Yoda. Obi-wan Kenobi was “The Master Of Soresu,” This meant Kenobi was unbeatable to anyone equal to his level or lower. Bcuz Mace & Yoda are the strongest fighters, in that order, Kenobi was not on they’re level & could easily be defeated by both. Anakin beat Cin with one arm while dueling another Jedi combatant like child’s play. This was do to the gap in they’re respective power levels. Simply Mastering for lll was not enough. One had to be on a very high level. It all depends on the level of mastery a Jedi Padawan, Knight or Master elevated to. In Attack Of The Clones, Anakin was a level 7 Master Duelist whereas Obi-wan was a level 5 Master Duelist. Dooku was a level 8. Despite the level of mastery is important. For as powerful thru form lll Kenobi proved to become in Revenge Of The Sith, Yoda flat out told Kenobi he was nowhere near strong enough to beat Palpatine. Think of it like this also, there are 3 tiers within each level. Low tier, Mid Tier, High Tier. Levels 1 - 10.

@@jordanglasper1064 Ok first off i want wherever link you have to prove that these characters where a " level 8 or 10 duelist." Where in star wars has it ever gave dueling a grade of 1-10. Second you never disproved my point. All you said was basically no form 3 was a 'level 10' and got defeated by a sith and to that i say well guess what the video says "why a form 3 never lost to a sith" not why a form 3 'level 10' never lost to a sith. Honestly your comment sounded like per nonsense, please direct me to any link, it can be canon or legends that says individual dueling forms had tiers 1-10. Many Jedi didn't bother to master Form 3 to fight the Sith for the same reason few Jedi didn't bother to learn Form 2 - the Jedi of the Clone Wars were not equipped or prepared or trained to fight the Sith, but enemies with blasters validated a basic understanding. So in war-like combat, Jedi would use Form 3 defensively, but they would default to a balanced and easy to learn Form 1, an acrobatic Form 4 which was probably the most exciting form for young Padawans, or a comprehensive Form 6. It's important to take into context that Jedi are not really concerned with light saber vs light saber mastery at the level of Knight and below during Clone Wars era and it was considered a sort of preference or curiosity or even reason for caution if you bothered to master something related to that.

1. Obi Wan has been defeated by Douku more than once. 2. Mace Windu stated Obi Wan had the best chance against Grevious because Grevious has the ability to learn and copy other styles. Grievous would have become way too strong if he fought Windu since Windu's lightsaber form was extremely powerful. The best option would be a defensive lightsaber form, and Obi Wan was by far the best user of that form. 3. Form 3 is highly respected because it is the textbook example of what a jedi should be, which is why Obi Wan was the ideal jedi in terms of ideals and principles.
