I think that Palpatine's plan was to make Luke kill Vader and make him become his new apprentice and that Vader's plan was to make Luke kill Palpatine and make him become his new apprentice.

Yep, that's how the Sith work. Palpatine wanted Luke to kill Vader because Luke had more potential due to Vader being severely injured. Vader wanted Luke to join him so they could team up and kill Palpatine.

Ultimately, it's a reference to how Anakin fell because he loved ("[...]It is the dark that seeds cruelty into justice, that drips contempt into compassion, that poisons love with grains of doubt. [...]"), but was also redeemed because of it. The dark's strength is in how it can corrupt such positive sentiments, but because they were so positive at the start, they can't be destroyed completely. As long as the dark's triumph originates with love, love can fight back against it.

And to think Disney is going to destroy this iconic moment by bringing Sidious back for fan service. I know he showed up in the EU as a clone, but everyone I’ve talked to HATES that story. Bringing back Palpatine in any way completely diminishes Anakin redemption, and that is the single greatest moment in Star Wars period.

So the question remains that they both were holding back during the dual, but if both were to fight at there fullest who would have won Ps don’t just give this win to Vader for the simple fact of experience, for Luke is said to be ready by yoda himself and he was intending Luke to face Vader as if there was not going to be inner conflict, not only that but even thou he has little training, Luke is said to be anakin equal in both physique and force potential, the main difference is anakin had all the training he could ever need handed to him but he squandered it because he thought he was still beater then everyone with little training which is one of the many reasons why he lost to owi won, Luke however not having full training treated it has a true student of the force for he trusted it and it favored him because of that it favored him more then his father(anakin relied on his own talents in everything with the force meaning he didn’t train like his Jedi master, if he did the force push in ROTS would have decimated any force push), even luke’s skills with a lightsaber would have succeeded anakin’s if given the same experience for he mastered form 5 of lightsaber combat 3 years before his father the difference between Luke skills and his fathers is the fact that the only opponent he has faced in with a dual it is own father no one else, my point of all this being Vader defeated anakin for the reasons above but Luke is said to be ready(even the emperor admits this) then what are the chances,(I have my own conclusion what are yours?)

That was his literal son The only reason he joined the Darkside was because he believed his twins died when she felt in the force and assumed were alive and after losing them the emperor was the only person he could consider a friend even though the competition wasn’t that fierce (in the words of Arthur Morgan). I think in its own way it was more of a suicide by combat he lost his will to continue knowing that he became the thing That he swore to destroy and was going to destroy the only thing they gave his life a new purpose.

Anakin/Vader was always a slave except for two brief occasions. Slave to Wato. Slave as a monastic Jedi minion. Slave as a dark side initiate brutally carrying Palpatine's agenda. Then slave to his cybernetics at the behest of the Emperor. His brief exposure to the teachings of Qui Gon Jinn were neither defined by or against the Jedi. It was true agency. Then finally, he was liberated by his son. As Luke saw himself behind Vader's mask on Dahobah, Vader could see redemption for himself in Luke. Anakin could finally reclaim his identity. his identity. Star Wars is Faustian that nobody but someone like Ian McDiarmid could have played the Emperor.

Robert Agu Vader is now canonically a better duelist than Sidious where as Sidious still has power. Another thing is Palpatine in recent canon even notes that Vader's Force potential is only being hindered by his mental state (Melancholy, depression) and is very wary of him should he finally "get over it." So I think it's safe to say that Vader could kill Palpatine if he truly wanted to, but sadly he is hindering himself with Palpatine taking advantage of the fact.

Hello There Star Wars Reading Club. I always understood that Vader never truly had any desire to kill Luke but simply sway him to his side. However, I was never quite so sure what exactly what was going through Vader's mind until you gave us this amazing video. The information maybe classified as Legends but to me, it is still regarded as canon in my personal head canon. I love the detail that went into Vader's thoughts from the book and that it all makes sense as Vader never truly wanted to kill his son at all. He simply didn't want to let Luke be killed or be turned by Sidious. He just wasn't sure of what to do at that moment. He knew the time was right when Sidious was so focused on killing Luke that Vader saw his chance and took it before it was too late. Vader never intended to kill Luke. His plan was to turn Luke to the Dark Side and for them to destroy the Emperor and " Rule the Galaxy as Father and Son." He was also conflicted by his feelings for his son and when Luke released his anger he wasn't able to stand up to his assault.

Darth Vader / Anakin skywalker was a brave warrior. Although tormented the goodness in him never died out. It just needed something to rekindle it. He fulfilled his destiny and brought balance to the force as the chosen one. All along he was simply a vessel of the force fulfilling his destiny. An amazing story.

Seems that a real game changer was when Vader was able to get into Luke's mind and learn that Luke had a sister. Luke came closer to turning to the dark side to protect her than at any time. It's kind of like how Anakin turned to try to save Padme. Except knowing about Leia raised the stakes for Vader. Now he not only had to protect Luke, but himself too. Since Sidious also learned about Leia at the same time, there would be nothing to stop him from killing both Luke and Vader and then making her the new apprentice. Someone was going to have to die there.

@@Oscar61985 Vader was 10X the duelist luke was, he was slightly weaker in the force but his experience and 30 years of training made him the better force user using the darkside with its many abilities. Luke did not have offensive force powers that would work on vader. Vader had superhuman strength thanks to his suit and unlimited oxygen for his stamina he could fight for hours. Vader was just holding his son off to stall but his taunting of leia made luke rage and vader lost control of the duel and lost his hand, if vader was not confused he would of made quick work of his son he's the greatest Jedi killer to live, Grandmaster luke would dominate vader though.

Luke was on the same strength level as Vader but not on the same force category, Luke could defend against Vaders force powers to a certain degree.but Luke was using psychological warfare on his father to prevent the sith lord from gaining force rage

As it's stated in a graphic novel, Luke had a "battle of equals" with Vader, but, as confirmed in this video, it was because Vader was holding back and only parrying, while trying to fuel Luke's Dark Side to make the latter join him against The Emperor. Luke was an "equal" to Vader because Vader was holding back, not wanting to be killed but also not wanting to kill Luke, just fuel the Dark Side in him. Ultimately, it got completely out of control and he tripped, causing Luke to find an opening and defeat Vader. But if Vader actually went all out on Luke, then he would probably win.

I always beleived, and still do to some extend, that Vader got himself ready to die to save his son. As Vader knew what was coming and he did tell Luke : -In time, you will call him master as I have. I though Vader only wanted Luke to unlock the power of the dark side within, but he knew he could not run away from his fate with the emperor. So Luke would HAVE to take his place. Only he would not be injured and crippled as Vader was, and may yet become strong enough to defeat the emperor, as he intended so long ago.

Sideous's lack of perception at Endor seems to me to show the Obi Wan & Yoda after becoming one with the force were able to cloud his vision, more & more I come to believe that their deaths are far far more important than it may at first seem, lending ever more wait to Kenobi's words "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine".

Assuming Luke really did cut down Vader, what exactly is stopping Luke from turning around and leaving (barring Sidious himself)? Does Sidious really think that any worthy Force user falling to the dark side automatically means said user would join Sidious?

For some reason i personally dont call the "reformed" vader anakin, because in my opinion, when anakin turned to the dark/vader its like the bad side in him just wins control over the good/light one, because its stronger at the time. but i dont think Anakin was being completely erased, because vader obviously has anakins training, combat experience and skill. I think, or it at least makes more sense to me, that vader is the combination of Anakin and, well, vader - essentially the bad in him. also, i dont really think his actual "converting" was just because he suddenly became a bad person, but because of his - natural - feelings and wishes and desires. In my opinion he just gets influenced too much, at early age by the light, to be a jedi, and then by palpatine/the "dark" to become a sith, when really he should have been neutral - a force user - due to his meaning of existence > perfect balance. and you cant have that with either the one or the other (being jedi and sith) being stronger. If you accept that, it makes more sense that vader is just anakins true form, a combination of both sides, but being called vader because vader agreed to learn the dark as well, thus becoming the balanced being that he should´ve been from the start. Now maybe I´m just thinking bullshit but if anyone can see my point / thinks the same lemme know.

After at the hands of Obi-Wan and the fact he wore that robotic suit, Vader was technically weaker. However, to make up for this he became possibly the best duelist ever and more importantly used hid hate to increase his abilities. He couldn't hate Luke though because he was the one last connection to Padme he had as far as he knew.

This makes so much God damned sense. Too bad Vader didn't let his blade "slip" slightly when blocking Luke's swing at Sidious. Either allowing Luke's blade to slide down his to hit sidious, or letting Luke's blade push both blades into sidious. Or instead of lifting sidious with his own body, coulda used the force to lift or move or push sidious over that railing. One odd thing though, that I've always wondered, if Dooku was a master of "Force Fly", and having taught it to Sora Bulq, how come Sidious never adopted it from Dooku, or even bothered to learn it on his own. It could have saved him.

I mean the film made it pretty obvious that Vader wanted to try and turn Luke so they both could defeat Palpatine and take over. He was willing to die before killing his son. Him being defeated showed that clearly. It was over for him at that point. Either Luke could join Sidious and strike down his father to replace him or stand true as a Jedi and be killed by Sidious. Vader allowed himself to be defeated and I don't know how Sidious would feel about that after Luke was dead. Case in point: Anakin was yet again conflicted.

When he said vader did not want Luke to be Palpatine slave it showed that he did not want his son to follow his path it made me think anakin was indeed still alive.

I think Vader should take in his head the possibility of the variant we saw in reality almost after he saw Luke's new lightsaber. If Luke never turn to the Dark Side he risked to be tortured by Palpatine with his forcelightings. This situation on the one hand give a possibility to kill Palpatine because he would loose his control, but n the other hand how to help Luke to survive? Vader knew everything about pain. So his idea could be make Luke angry enough for the anger reduce the pain.

Kinda saw it as Vader wanted to test Luke and make sure he was skilled enough, but if he refused to fight or even was easily beaten he would kill him. Simply put, he was a slave and unless Luke could somehow defeat the emperor he was screwed Or..if the Emperor was distracted;)

I think Vader intended to do the bare minimum too keep just above Luke in power but did get overpowered, people say that the only reason Luke won is because Vader was caught off guard but he had plenty of time to react to Luke’s rage I wasn’t like 3 seconds it was a good 15 sexonda
